Your first combat flight sim...
SGCSG1 replied to Gunrunner's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
It was called 'Air Duel'. Anyone remember this? Seems like a cool idea for a sim. http://www.listal.com/game/air-duel-80-yea...ghting-pc-games -
Your first combat flight sim...
SGCSG1 replied to Gunrunner's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
I bought a PC to play X-Wing (greatest game ever) and soon wanted to try a 'real' flight sim. I bought some 'Combat thru the Ages' thing, I think it was from Microprose. You had a ww1, a ww2, a jet. It was a survey sim, obviously. Not very good at all, at least I wasn't any good at it. I wish I could remember what it was called. This would have been 91, 92. Anyone remember this? I moved onto Red Baron (YEAH!), Falcon 3.0 (YEAH!) and AOE (very disappointing). -
New interview regarding demo, required internet connection, screenshots

I hope TK starts working on the next ex-pack for 'First Eagles' soon. Because I'm sure as hell never signing up for this bulls**t. Online authentication for single-play - what a joke. They are about to find out that just because Blizzard makes billions (yes, billions) of dollars with WOW you can't copy their business model with some half-assed Russian flight-sim. -
Highly recommended book - Air Combat Manoeuvres
SGCSG1 posted a topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
I ran into this while browsing at Amazon. It's an oversized 250 page book with glossy color pages, very nicely done. The content covers many aspects of air combat with a particular emphasis on how to do combat techniques like split-s, Immelman, schandelle, etc. There's lots of history, lots of very cool photographs. It's a lot of fun to read and I have no doubt it will help me improve my simming. Highly recommended. Cheap, too, only $18.50. Purchase from Amazon -
Highly recommended book - Air Combat Manoeuvres

I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the illustrations, the length of the book, the quality of the text. -
VERY nice. I'm playing with the stock game, have been meaning to try some mods.

Policeman pulls over Paddy and says, 'Paddy, do ya know your wife fell outa the car about a mile back'? Paddy says, 'Thank the Lord I thought I'd gone deaf!'

World War 1 aces...were they patriots? Or psychotic killers? I'm reminded of the story of Anthony Fokker's invention of the 'shoot thru the propeller' setup and how the Germans wanted him to test it. He got a plane in his sights and couldn't pull the trigger. They had to get Boelke (sp?) to test Fokkers invention.

Storm of War: Battle of Britain - Interview e screens

Interesting comments about the ease of doing a WW1 conversion. Fingers crossed on that one. -
Put on the November 08 patch again after you install it. This is the voice of experience talking here. PS: And I strongly advice buying the ex-pack, it is well worth the bucks!

The Driving Force behind Third Wire
SGCSG1 replied to Fubar512's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Great article - I am a HUGE fan of Third Wire games. The idea of a 'third wire' space combat game - is absolutely wonderful. It's like, what if someday Paramount pictures gave some hot, young director a hundred and fifty million dollars to reboot 'Star Trek'. Nah, never happen. -
LATEST UPDATE PATCH V1.26 IS NOW AVAILABLE!
SGCSG1 replied to Polovski's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - News Releases
Tres groovy. I JUST got my OFF dvd in the mail today and have been messing around with it an hour or so. Very impressed so far. -
Ok, there's Flyboys. Worth seeing for the special effect, if nothing else. There's the 2008 'Red Baron', not available on dvd (yet). And of course 'The Blue Max' if you can stomach George Peppard. Anything else?
-
Agree on all counts. Looks GREAT. First rate.

It's a funny thing. I just started getting back into sims a month or two ago after a six or seven year absense. Combatsim very quickly became my favorite webpage. WW1 is my preferred subject for sims and I've been enjoying the heck out of FE. I decided a few days ago to order OFF and thought, 'now I'll have to split my time between the combatace and the official OFF forums'. That isn't the case anymore and I know it's a hassle for the people moving over here, but I think this is going to work out great. OFF and Combatace = an excellent combination, IMHO.
-
I think the FE pack is worth the money, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. And I like to encourage Third Wire with my cash!
-
1680x1050 supported? Thanks for any info.
-
I'm a hard-core First Eagle fan and will continue to play and and will support (ie, 'buy') all future Third Wire WW1 products. That said, I just this morning ordered my OFF dvd. You can't have two girlfriends, but there's no reason you can't have two WW1 sims.

The constant online authentication is pretty much a deal-breaker for me. But add to that the 'pay and pay and pay' and I doubt I'll get onboard with this. We'll see. If a regular sim is $29 - $49, how much can they charge for just the 'skeleton' of a sim? Twenty bucks? Twenty-five? Then five per plane? You're going to get over fifty bucks pretty fast...

My First Attempt at Custom Paint in OFF BHaH
SGCSG1 replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Those look great, thanks for posting. There's lots of FE activity in the forum here, but not much for OFF. I hope that changes. I'm a big fan of FE and am thinking of ordering OFF. -
Fifty years ago I was five and he was really old then.

There are so many problems with Steam I don't know where to start. I've never had them reply to an email. They do NOT spell out in their EULA how their service works or what they're doing. They reserve the right to do pretty much anything they want, up to and including just not letting you play the games you've paid for. I certainly hope the ROF people have a better plan and implementation for how they are doing things. I'll try to keep an open mind, but if I don't get 100% disclosure on how this works, I'm not ok with it. Have you been reading about Relics DRM implementation for their new RTS, 'Dawn of War: II'? It's a frigging nightmare - two online authentications, Steam AND GFWL to play in single-player mode. Lots of people having problems. I think computer gaming has a death wish. Makes me appreciate Third Wire all the more.
-
Online account needed for single-player? Sounds like a non-starter for me. They'll probably want some kind of service running on your pc. Maybe a nice root-kit to make sure they know what you are doing on YOUR PC. Then of course on Saturday night I want to play, but their server is down, so, well, too bad. This is porked. Back to First Eagles for me. PS: If they want online authentication they should do it the way GALCIVII does it - you authenticate once to the server when you install, then you can play anytime you want, internet connection or not. Doesn't sound like they are going that way, though.
