  1. Nicely done, Olham, Think I'll give it a whirl....just for the smaller TAC size, of course....*cough*. Thanks for sharing... On a completely different note, I couldn't help but notice that Spad is missing 3/4 of it's wings...........................................you BASTARD!! Cheers Mate, Parky
  2. computer

Carrick, I would have gone higher-end on the video card... which may have validated Al's claim that you need more punch from the PSU, but when it comes to hardware, he really doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. (Sorry Al....but stick to what you know). You'll run that card, on that platform, with the 650, no problem. The entire "draw" under load from that rig is less than half of what the PSU will handle, unless you overclock the snot out of the entire system. (A 5850 graphics acceleraor and no less, to do justice.....preferably a 5870....at which point you may want to consider beefing up the PSU) Cheers, Parky
  3. Thank You OBD

Captain Sopwith, That is a brilliantly authored and richly deserved display of gratitude if ever I've read one. Well done!! Not sure if it was Widowmaker (or was it some Chap named Winston) who once said something like "Never in the field of WWI Air Combat Simulation development has so much been owed by so many, to so few. Whoever it was, also expressed the heartfelt sentiments of most of us I'm sure... It's never a poor idea to let those who toil on our behalf so doggedly, know just how much we appreciate their efforts. Cheers, Parky
  4. That would be slightly drastic and much more time consuming than an uninstall and reinstall of the app. I'm sure it would achieve pretty much the same thing though. If it were my system, I think I'd choose the faster option. (I do love Acronis though.....been using it for years.) Cheers, Parky
  5. Olham, First of all, it's good to see you back. You're sadly missed when you aren't here to stimulate discussion in these forums. This has probably already crossed your mind, but the simple fix to your problem may be a simple switch back to an earlier version of Adobe Flashplayer. If you scroll down the page in the following link, you'll find some archived versions. The one you're looking for is probably 10.1 Make sure you reboot your PC after you've uninstalled the current version if you decide to head in this direction. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html Cheers, Parky
  6. Problem with system

I'll bet you a beer that it doesn't.....lol
  7. Problem with system

And inevitably, there's that often overlooked but most critical technical question "Which side of the desk should he rest his coffee on?" My advice would be the left side. That way he won't run the risk of knocking it over with any rapid mouse movements.....unless of course he's left handed, in which case he could always turn his desk 180 degrees ...
  8. Problem with system

    Once again..............Perfect
  9. Problem with system

    Perfect..........
  10. Problem with system

I suggest you listen to Tamper, Almcoyjr, Bird Dog ICT and Von Paulus and a couple of others........and then go buy your "stuff" Welcome to the Over Flanders Fields FORUM....
  11. P4 update Please.......

Not even going to hum a couple of bars for us, huh? Cheers, Parky
  12. P4 update Please.......

I desperately want to be one of the guys who's selected to receive the Master Beta....
  13. Al,I don't mean to suggest that you should go through the hassle of setting up the 40 inch with your PC again just for experimentation purposes, but I do have a theory for you. I've seen the exact same phenomenon you're describing on 3 or 4 occasions. In fact I experienced it yet again with the 42 inch monitor I'm using for OFF right now. What solved it for me was adjusting the video scaling attributes. This is usually done at the driver level, but you may find scaling options buried somewhere deep (or not so deep) in the LCD's settings as well. Once you figure out the correct scaling setting or combination of settings between the LCD and your drivers, the problem should be solved. No guarantees, but it's worked for me every time. Cheers, Parky
  14. OT: Big national debt but...

I could use a good flossing......
  15. What do I need to run OFF

Hi Shredward, Al's pretty much right on the money with his appraisal. I'll go out on a limb too and suggest that the guy would be looking at a bit of a slide show. Pretty weak hardware and really isn't up to snuff. Cheers, Parky
  16. AMD or Intell

I'd be interested to hear what the gurus say as well. Strictly from an observer's perspective, it would seem to make logical sense that if you were to go with an AMD-based platform, you'd pair it up with an AMD-based graphics accelerator. AMD processor+AMD Chipset+AMD GPU (pity they don't make RAM....or do they? lol) Should = a very compatible arrangement. Not necessarily true though, IMHO. Frankly, I think you can pair Intel up with AMD and or ATI, or Nvidia up with Intel and or AMD and as long as you use common sense when you select your components. You'll still end up with a very compatible and stable system.......if you "know" what you're doing. As far as AMD's processors in comparision to Intel's processors in general? Can't comment. Haven't used anything but Intel since the core 2 duo came out.....and probably wouldn't. Haven't had a single problem with 'em........why change now? Cheers, Parky
  17. Always my pleasure... You could go with a cheaper version of this card and save about 40 bucks, but the one here in the link has a vastly improved cooling solution over most of the others I've looked at. Nobody seems to be complaining about heat or noise issues with this specific card as they do with a number of the others. Based on that alone, it might be your best bet. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102872&cm_re=5870-_-14-102-872-_-Product Cheers, Parky
  18. Hi Gaw, According to your info, you do have a PCIe slot, so you're good to go in that regard. Next step is to pull the side off your tower and see if the card will actually fit. The 5870 is 28cm (11 inches) in length. Run your tape measure along your existing card and extend it to 11 inches. Make sure you have clearance without running into existing hard drives or hard drive bays. Easy to relocate an existing drive, but it's a pain in the arse if you have to start actually butchering the HD bays. If it looks like it'll fit, all we have to worry about now is PSU requirements. The 5870 requires two 6 Pin PCIe plugs from the power supply. If you don't have those, you can always use 4 pin molex to PCIe adapters, but I'ver never been a big fan of that approach. Probably better to install an entirely new PSU. Ideally, you want to go with 600 watts or greater for that specific card, although AMD claim you can get away with a very good 500 watter. I would't take the chance. Go with a minimum of 600 watts. Great upgrade path there. It'll run circles around what you already have. Cheers, Parky
  19. So Lou, What you're saying in essence is, you only became a horribly obnoxious and spiteful human being AFTER you stopped drinking??? ;) Cheers Mate, Parky
  20. The other Flight Sim...

Hi Elephant, There is nothing offensive or insulting about any of this. However, as has been so tactfully pointed out by Lou, "If your friend wishes to show off his F1 the polite thing to do would be for him to throw his own party". We understand you mean no harm with the nature of your post. From experience though, any time a member has brought up a topic which compares this sim (OFF) with another, it has almost invariably led to some form of heated debate, and on some occasions, it's just become downright ugly. The lads from OBD are abundantly aware of the merits as well as some of the limitations of their own creation, as well as those of "others". They didn't develop a sim of this quality by keeping their heads stuck in the mud of no man's land. I doubt they need any reminders or a heads-up as to what's going on in the development of other WW1 combat sims, even if those reminders are offered up as being "motivational". Having said that, this forum is comprised of a very open-minded group of people. There are several of us who also fly these other WW1 sims. I for one enjoy going for a spin in RoF occasionally. It does have it's obvious strong points. If I only had room for one WW1 flight sim on my hard drive, I'd keep OFF without hesitation, but that's just a matter of personal preference. As far as I'm concerned, comparisons between the two are best conducted in a private forum or chat, where the potiential for hurt feelings and potential flame wars is virtually eliminated. Fortunately, I have room on my hard drives for any WW1 air combat sim that's even worth a look. It just happens to be my favorite "niche", and although my loyalty will always remain with OBD and the members of this forum (I've watched this sim develop from before the release of phase 1....) it doesn't mean I'll get all bent out of shape when somebody mentions another product. It's mostly just in the name of forum "etiquette" and the desire to avoid emotionally charged comments that we prefer not to discuss other similar products in a forum that is specifically geared toward the enjoyment of this one. No harm done as far as I can see... Cheers, Parky
  21. Quite right, old chap. What's the sense in flying planes you already know are going to win the Battle of Britain before it even starts...... Cheers, Parky (Olham.....you've just been "baited"......lol)
  22. If I'm not mistaken, he's on about his 4th or 5th reinstall of the OS. There aren't too many viruses or spyware infections that are going to survive a hard drive format....
  23. We are talking about the same sim here, right? The one that was originally supposed to hit the shelves in November 2006?? If it is, I think I've waited long enough... Cheers, Parky
  24. The last time I obtained a PC from a custom builder was many, many moons ago. Some outfit called "MDG Computers" up here in The Great White North. It housed a killer Pentium II 350. Simply based on that, when it comes to offering advice on custom PC builders, I'll have to remain almost silent. (Notice I said "almost"). I have a couple of friends who've purchased systems from IBuyPower. Neither of them had any complaints that I'm aware of. Having said that, I'd probably follow Dr. Mccoy Junior's advice and "assess the reputations of the builders and look for the "best bang for your buck".....paying close attention to the list of potential builders he's been kind enough to list here as well. Best of luck with whatever you decide on. Cheers, Parky
