Skins for the "Italian Front User Built Campaign" uploaded
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Bullethead and everyone, feel free to post your skins in here. That's why I chose this title - it was meant for everyone (no use in having 5 skin threads). Good to have another skin ready for "Little Italy" - I wonder how far the mission builders are? I never flew the Hannover, so I didn't know about this distorting skin. -
To give you an idea of what I'm fighting with - here is a screenshot of what I got done so far. I decided to lay a grid of colours over the sides and top part, plus some letters. This way I can now work towards eliminating all distortions (more or less). Still quite a bit of work...

According to "The Jasta Pilots", Oberleutnant Josef Loeser was the CO of Jasta 39 from 4 December 1917 - 4 February 1918, when he got wounded in action. After his recovery he flew with Jasta 46 from 18 April - 3 June 1918. He became the CO of this Staffel on 23 April. His two victories were both Sopwith Camel in Italy; the first flown by 2nd Lt. Ross from No. 45 Sqdn RFC (KIA). He was shot down in flames north of Hamel during combat with R.E.8 of No. 3 Sqdn, AFC.

Well, even if not perfect, she looks very good already, Quack! Yeah, I just worked on mine, and it is nervewrecking to eliminate all the distortions. It looks good on the 2-dimensional skin file, but when you wrap it around the 3D model - boy! Thanks a lot for the photos - never saw any other than model kits. And so it's Jasta 39 - got that wrong somehow; thank you!

Thank you both for your recommendations, Lou and Hasse Wind - I will look for both (for reasonable prices).

SPAD VII Paint for the Italian Front Project
Olham replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Wow, another nice design, Lou - I guess I will also fly an Italian side pilot. -
Yes, black-white, but just vertically striped. The "barber pole" one is so much trickier...

Here is another dimension for our "Little Italy" campain: some German Jagdstaffeln were based in Italy for some time. Here is one example. Jasta 31 was stationed in Italy for some time in the war. The bases were: Audritz 20 September - 2 November 1917 Udine 3 - 11 November 1917 Aviano 15 - 19 November 1917 San Giacomo 19 November - 2 January 1918 San Fior 3 January - 13 March 1918 I will research this a bit more and report, which Jasta were where, and when. This would mean, that the Jasta 31 "Barber Pole"-Albatros D.III OAW could see action. I had built this skin long time ago, but never finished it (it was hair splitting hard to make the red bands meet!). Now I searched for the file, but it must have been left and lost on my old rig. Maybe I'll build it again.

I have just found this book title "Hauptmann Boelckes Feldberichte" (1916). I wonder, if anyone here actually read this book? And if you did know the above title - is there a better book about Boelcke you would recommend? I'd like to get a better insight into the person Oswald Boelcke.

Good job done, Widow!

PS: how comes, that some Italian planes have the roundel sequence green-white-red, and others red-white-green??? -
SPAD VII Paint for the Italian Front Project
Olham replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Ah - so the SPAD XIII someone had just recently posted a photo of (in a shopping mall), was not Baraccas, but Picci's. It carried this same black Griffin. -
I only know, that Manfred von Richthofen made an interesting remark to a man he met on a train ride. "I am after all only a combat pilot;" von Richthofen said, "but Boelcke, he was a hero." Manfred von Richthofen's 60th victory was a two-seater, and he attacked the crew with his brand-new Fokker Dr.1 Triplane. His description of the attack ends with a short statement, that shows no shame or remorse. Von Richthofen said: "Apparently the adversary had taken me for a British triplane, as the observer stood up in his machine without making a move to attack me with his machine gun." One does not know the inner feelings or judgements of Manfred von Richthofen, but in his appearance and speech, he was all the Prussian soldier, who didn't show sentiments about such events. I guess that Boelcke was different. Maybe warmer and with more noticable empathy.

Jasta 22 had a busy day on 7 July, 1917. The French attacked ground targets everywhere around our base at Vivaise. SPADs went very low for strafing our truck columns; Nieuport 17bis attacked our neighbouring airfield at Chambry. More Nieuports tried to destroy a balloon nearby. A madhouse! But I sent down a Nieuport, and short after him, a SPAD from the "Storks"! -

Thank you, Lou - one of them is a co-project of you and me; I used your Backhausen & Söhne fabric; thanks for that! I see you will also add some to our "Little Italy" project; your SPAD is looking good! I wonder if you can assist HouseHobbit about the mission building - I guess you have at least some knowledge of the war down there? -
