I'd agree that language is the great barrier to more European pilots joining us. I don't know what focus English language lessons have in their respective countries. If my French and German (largely forgotten now, expecially the grammar) are anything to go by, then they would probably be able to ask where the nearest hotel was, but not discuss 90 year old aero-engines. Any steps to bring an even more international crowd together in pursuit of a common interest can only be a good thing.

Normally I'm overwhelmingly outnumbered, because my wingmen disappear very quickly. OK, not always, but that's how many of my pilots have gone. Actually, although I voted that I was often outnumbered, I've checked my flight notes for previous campaigns (the current chap is having such a quiet time in spring 1916, that I'll probably replace him) and this isn't really the case at all. My last German career (I've only flown 3- can't get into them): Jasta 77b in the Marne, March 1918. Flew 4 missions and was outnumbered 4:6 and 4:7 in two fights. British campaigns, mostly summer 1917 to summer 1918 (with the exception of a summer in 1916 with 1 RNAS and lots of 9 plane flights of Eindekkers); I had 36 encounters equal or greater numbers to the enemy and 24 in which I was outnumbered, typically 4:6. The distribution was uneven, so sometimes there was a long string of encounters with small enemy flights and then all of a sudden you'd be fighting for your life. If you were in the middle of one of those period it certainly feels like you're against it.

Otherwise this would be the best excuse ever invented when late for work. "The clock stopped and so did time. At least in the region of my bed."

Earth spits out unexploded granades
Maeran replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
The good side of this is that those munitions were intended to kill many more men, and didn't. Let's hope it stays that way. -
"It's not too late to fly with the Red Baron- OverFlandersFields.com"

Yes, that's exactly why. The prop dissapears if you're point of view is too close to it. If you have trackIR you can demonstrate this by getting a long nosed machine (Albatros, SE5a etc) and leaning back. I think it must be hard coded, otherwise the team would have shortened the distance you could be from the prop without it dissapearing.

So sad. Especially a week after Henry Allingham.

I live at the 3 o' clock point on Scouserlad13's circle. I'd just have it as the same place if I were you.

Anyone got a large field that could be put to good use?
Maeran replied to shredward's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Ooooh. No. But land can be suprisingly cheap. Last time I heard of anyone buying land (it was two years ago and they were building their dream house), a suitable field could have been bought for not much more than that hangar. -
OFF BH&H, future: Work in Progress
Maeran replied to Polovski's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I'd love to see a Taube- mainly because I have never found a model of that beautiful type anywhere, and I would love to fly one. As it is I am very happy to see the Parasol and the Clutching Hand. More 2 seaters are definitely needed. I should like to see the Channel opened up too- but that needs a lot of machines- Zeppelins, Brandebergs etc. But at least then the coastal defense units would have something to do apart from sitting out at Eastchurch and chatting to chorus girls. -
Help the Germans with claim report
Maeran replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Out of curiousity. Has anyone tried to submit claims in a non-English language? Do any claims get accepted? -
He did what I would do (and many of my alter ego's have done). Cheers to him and jolly well done you for landing. Did the Camels get the camera?

Help the Germans with claim report
Maeran replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Additional note on this. Slightly vague; probably because I'm just back from the pub. I seem to remember the use of 'hours' in military reports. As in 08:30 am would be reported as 0830 hours. -
Help the Germans with claim report
Maeran replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
In lots of ways, unhelpfully for you. (although never ever "N/O", possibly NE) However, since we are assuming that the reports are based on historical reports, I refer you to the two connected with this thread. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=38959 due north Southwesterly (one word) Over Lille (or wherever it may be) seems to be common from what I've seen. Not "north west of_____" but "over _____". I suppose they had more detailed maps. -
Log doesn't match missions flown
Maeran replied to Hoghead's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I've noticed that even though only campaign flights are logged when you have that option selected, but QC flights are still counted where it says "missions flown". They do not count towards your hours however and don't seem to have any other effect. (reading Jammer's post again I'm not 100% on that actually) If you don't want the missions flown number to missmatch against your campaign (and it is a very minor thing in my opinion), can I suggest you create a test pilot for QC? I have and Sgt A. Trainer has been doing a fine job too. -
OT: My Ace Autograph and memorabilia collection pictures

I particularly like the letters and envelopes. Of course, they posed for thse pictures and then signed them, but the letters seem closer to a moment in their lives. And the drawing. You or I draw it and it's an imaginative doodle. He'd probably seen something very like it not long before. Having a very far reaching interest in history, I found this. Don't know if it will actually help anyone, but interesting nonetheless. I remember reading an article recently on the decline of handwriting in English as well, since most people today write relatively little by hand. So this struck a chord with me. http://genealogy.about.com/gi/dynamic/offs...h/Sutterlin.htm -
I've got a Cyborg Evo FFB on order, because although Fortiesboy sorted out my conflict between my (Saitech) and my Sidewinder, I'd already decided that if I have to buy a new stick, it might as will be force feedback. Glad to hear that people like them, since after a decade with my current stick, I was afraid the new one might not last very long at all. I've been putting in a lot of time in FS9 with my new pedals and after roughly 10 hours I reckon I'm getting the hang of basic co-ordination. Crabbing into the wind and going into and out of sideslips are not currently graceful manouveres for me though.

Yes. I try to keep responsibility to a minimum myself.

changing joystick axis- or do I need a new stick?
Maeran posted a topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - General Help
Just got the latest addition to my flightsim goodness, a set of Saitek pedals. Very nice and work a treat in Flight Simulator. In OFF unfortunately, the rudder axis conflicts with my joystick. The obvious thing to do is disable the twist axis on the stick. But that's my problem, I can see how to change button assignments, but not axis. I can't use the stick's own software for this, because it is a Sidewinder precision pro, and XP doesn't support the software. It's a really nice stick and has lasted me 10 years without a hitch. It's a bit of a pain that the two work together in FSX and FS9, but not OFF (CFS3). Is there any way around this without getting a new stick? -

That worked, Fortiesboy. Thanks very much gentlemen. My sidewinder lives to fly another day! -
changing joystick axis- or do I need a new stick?
Maeran replied to Maeran's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - General Help
It was originally a gameport stick, but it did come with a USB adapter. In any case, it's the programming software that isn't supported. -
It sounds like you have auto mixture off. If you're going to start at anything over 5000ft (and it will be running rough there) you need auto mixture on. If you don't then your engine will only start when you lean the mixture down to the right ratio and then press the starter (E). You don't have time for that in QC. As for gunnery, when I started with OFF, I also wasted lots of bullets with no effect. This is something you learn with practice, but basically, get so close that you're scared of collision and then go for the engine and pilot. It's the only way!

The second video really was brilliant. I couldn't identify the two with very short undercarriages- what were they? I was glad to see the (must be replica) pre-war machines in the air. Even now you can sense the excitement of simply getting in the air in such a machine.

Generally I'm not so bad. I've got a 6 kill Lieutenant with 14 hours on the clock. I'm going to put him aside however, to go properly DiD (he's still got alerts on). I do tend to get into hot water when a wingman goes down. Instead of thinking, "you're a man down but you might escape," I think; "I'll get you! You *********!" And that's when you find you can't get home, because you have nowhere to dive and his mates can outrun you on the level.
