OT: What's In Your Night Sky?
Hauksbee replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
As was Jack Northrup and his flying wings. I was shocked when I discovered that the fascinating airplane in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was a Northrup design. Spielberg added a more robust landing gear, and a a MG turret in the 'nose', but other than that... -
Ernst Udet - "Des Teufels General" ?
Hauksbee replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
It's been my understanding that Udet committed suicide after the leadership tried to blame him for the Luftwaffe's failure in the Battle of Britain. -
My intro was with a Mac II, a copy of "Chuck Yeager's Flight Sim, and a track ball. Many hours spent late nights chasing heavily-pixelated Me--109's. White knuckle flying at its best...circa 1996.

I just found this out - James McCudden didn't ...
Hauksbee replied to a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
WOW! All this detailed discussion...and not a single mention of "The Guns Of August" by Barbara Tuchman. Is Tuchman not read anymore? -
Nice screenshots!

Flying infrequently, as I have been lately, I've rather lost my chops. 'Used to be I could look around with the hat switch and still fly straight, but now the whole plane turns under me. It started after I used the F3 or F4 keys. I'm sure there's a way to stop this. I also recall that when it does happen, there's a key command to center the plane under you again. [ps: I do have TrackIR 5, but I find the hat switch convenient for a quick, snap look over my shoulder.] Thanks all.

Hat Switch rotates the whole plane...
Hauksbee replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
BINGO! That's what I was looking for! But thanks to you all. almccoyjr: I'll print out your paragraph and keep it nearby. Olham: Thanks for the offer. My e-mail address is kelley02790@charter.net. -
Hat Switch rotates the whole plane...
Hauksbee replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Actually, I'm not using TrackIR at all. Only the Hat Switch. I keep promising myself that I'll take some time and fine-tune TrackIR, but at the moment it whips the scene past me so fast that I get near-vertigo moments and it takes a second, or two, to get focused back on my target. I use the Hat Switch like almccoyjr; for a quick, snap-look at my six. If I lose the enemy, cycling through the five front/side positions usually finds them. (especially if labels are on.) Lately, using the Hat Switch effectively puts the plane in Float View; the Virtual Cockpit revolves under you. Or up and down. Getting the plane lined up straight again ( so you're looking down your guns) is almost impossible. In the time it takes to get your plane anywhere near straight, your intended victim gets away. I recall from times past that there was a key command that would re-stabilize the plane on pitch, roll and yaw axes. It might be a CFS3 thing. -
...and the Carlson Fokker Dr.1 in flight
Hauksbee replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Again I ask, "Is this a 3/4 scale"? Looks smaller than the attached photo, even tho' the cockpit is cramped in both cases. -
Skelettal framework of a Fokker Dr.1 "Dreidecker"

Wow! You're right. -
Skelettal framework of a Fokker Dr.1 "Dreidecker"
Hauksbee replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
It looks like this is a 3/4 scale Dr.I which would crowd the cockpit. -
I had one of my Hansa-Brandenburg posters on the screen for quite a while. Then somebody sent me this one of the dogs; four utter and completely distinct personalities.

I found a lot of references, but most all of them were frustratingly brief. Apparently, Dip. Ing Sablatnig was a minor player in furnishing aircraft, but well thought of. I found references to LVG building some Sablatnig designs, and after the war, Roland built some trying to enter the civil aviation field...as did the Sablatnig company itself. [it folded in 1921] I found references to Sablatnig planes flying in Latvia and Estonia after the war. The last photo here is [apparently] a post-WWI design and if you go to the last of the links, you can buy a model and fly it in [Microsoft?] flight sim. http://www.crossandc...s/Sablatnig.pdf http://1000aircraftp...deBill/9356.htm http://www.rodlangto...ww1/planes3.htm http://1000aircraftp.../Braas/6403.htm http://www.luftfahrt...i/itf/sabp3.htm http://www.fsplanet.com/03122004.htm

Outstanding Genth Family Website, Lots of WWI Info and Photos

Great site! Here's a somewhat grim photo of a pilots seat affixed to a gas tank. A "front-row seat" at the disaster. -
Fatal Error Loading Menu! OFF will now exit!
Hauksbee posted a topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - General Help
'Have been away from flying for a bit now. When I tried to launch OFF I got an error message which said 'Try uninstall and re-install. That I did. I went into Control Panel and uninstalled CFS3 (accidently) and OFF. Then re-installed both. Then got the SuperPatch V1.32 and the MiniPatch V1.32g...and got the same error message! Any thoughts on what is going on? -

Checked PTV#13. Launched CFS3, flew the P-47D successfully. [OFF installed as of last post] Then installed the SuperPatch, then the Mimi...and I get the same error message. -
Is this an original Albatros photo from WW1?
Hauksbee replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I'm certain that it is a WWI photo, but I can't prove it. I know I've seen it in some book on WWI aviation. -
Fatal Error Loading Menu! OFF will now exit!
Hauksbee replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - General Help
UncleAl: I went through the drill as explained. Did a Search and deleted everything that came up. Did an Advanced Search (including Hidden Files) and deleted all. When I could no longer get a response to 'OFF Searches', I checked Control Panel. I know you advised against going there, but after all the Searches, I still found the OFF.exe and the MegaPatch v1.32 in the list. I uninstalled both. (bad?) After that I launched CFS3.and successfully flew a B-26. Then installed OFF, inserted the CSF3 Disc 1 when asked, and finished. At this point, before downloading the Patches, I tried to open OFF. No go. I got the same error message as last time. Any clues at this point? Thanks. -
Being married to the wrong person who also has a toothache...?

It's gets pretty nasty when the Samurai spirit runs amok. At the end of WWII, as the dust was settling and we turned our attention to the Russians and Chinese, the Japan was our 'anchor point' in the Far East to contain Communism and promote Capitalism and Democracy. Consequently they were not held to the same standards we applied to the Nazis. In the steel mills of Manchuria, Chinese were worked to death and buried in mass graves. The Japanese also ran medical 'research'.

I'd vote for a Hansa-Brandenburg seaplane, and a Rumpler Taube.

Screen Shots, Videos, Media, OFF Posters
Hauksbee replied to MK2's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I can see why. That is, without doubt, the best video I've seen yet. Between your flying and FRAPS, the victim is almost always on screen. Hollywood has a place waiting for you choreographing dogfights! -
There y' go: real planes, real pilots. 'Doesn't get any better.

...and no Tiger Moths, or 'Wichita Fokkers"...they're all the real thing, During the filming of "Hells Angels", Howard Huges bragged that he had assembled the largest private air force in the world.

It's more about his emotional life than his flying...and they had to build it around a completely fictitious love affair with a nurse. His famous duel with Hawker happens in about four seconds. His "head wound" dogfight; the same and is really all about his convelescence (and the nurse) Werner Voss, who was barely 20, looks to be in his early thirties. His dofight/death is not shown at all. von Richtofen finds out about Voss's death while touring one of Fokker's factories. Fokker is torqued about the fact that Voss replaced the Oberussel engine with a British Bentley. (Bentley made a rotary engine?) And then, to top it all off, his final fight is not shown at all. He is last seen getting into his plane; his nurse, who has spent the night in his tent, comes down to the flight line in her bathrobe to see him off. (Yeah, right!) This is a soap opera, not a bio-pic.
