Being attacked from above is a disadvantage for about 10 to 30 seconds. The aircraft in 1914-18 had almost zero "Boom n Zoom" capabilties. A sharp turn as the enemy comes down from above and he streaks past you and bellow. I actually prefer them to be above me (as long as i spot em first) The Ai likes to dive almost vertically and just the 'slightest' adjustment in course and they have no shot.

Cool map so far Olham. Nice to see there are some pilots 'nearby'.

Looks like a mess of fun. And what sliders do you run at vasco? looks great, and runs even better even with fraps up. very nice sir! S! -
Normally I have three or four active pilots going in campaigns spread throughout the french escadrilles and british flying corps. (I even have an Albatross pilot, but he sees little action.) Recently however I've become quite fond of the se5 and her handling characteristics. Also, being the 'yank' that I am, I have been flying WM's "American" se5 skin. (bravo work sir) I enlisted a young chap into RFC 56, to fly along side the great Albert Ball in the spring days of April 1917. He has rapidly become not only my highest scoring pilot but now at 20+ hrs, he is also now my second longest surviving pilot. Last night the young ace headed out on an escort mission deep into german occupied teritory to hit an enemy airfield there. His small flight of 4 se5's face up against no fewer than 10 enemy Albatross DIII scouts. What ensued was easily the most intense simmulated air combat I've "ever" encountered in my history of flight simming. With every bank and roll the young pilot pressed home attack after attack. The sky absolutly FILLED with flying machines. At any given moment I could see two or three engagements around me. My wingman was attacking a PAIR of enemy machines, another enemy craft was on fire falling in a tight spin, and yet another group of craft were giving chase to the flight of four two seaters that we were escorting. And for the THIRD time in this short month, the infamous 'white axe' of Paul Straehle's Albatross sliced through the entire engagement setting one of the se5s on fire in a matter of seconds. And just as quickly as the battle had errupted, it was over. Gathering what was left of my flight (my wingman), I climbed the ol' bird as hard as she would climb and headed for home. After I landed and filled out my claim report I was greeted with the dawning of a new day. May 1st, 1917. Bloody April was over, and I had survived....for now. Effective immediately Thomas Macklroy has been removed from active duty and will report back home for a duration to be determind later. I just don't think I could bear loosing him at this point. So for now he'll have his well deserved leave and some of the other pilots will have to pick up the slack. Just a few pics from the last fight. "My" ace of aces dossier.

Yes, luckily THAT portion of a real combat pilots perilous life is NOT simmulated in OFF.

AI planes also dont have to worry about wind or its effects. So if you're running auto mixture with wind effects on. If you happen to be flying into a headwind you will be much slower than your m8s. It's for this reason alone that I have removed wind effects in 'workshops'.
-
Hehe, thanks Rc. I actually try to keep my claims short and sweet. If I remember 'specific' engagement scenarios i will elaborate. Mostly for my own ammusment when i look through my pilot logs. I am enjoying this pilot so much I couldnt stand to loose him. So he's off to england to test the new se5s that should be comming out of the production line soon.

Olham "THAT" pic is intense. i can't even tell you how close some of my better 'DiD' pilots came to their final fate due to a mid air collision. -
I have found that the British brass is easier to 'convince' of a kill than the french. My british pilots always seem to have the highest % of confirmations. S!

Nice to see them taking baby steps. Honestly I cant even imagine any company in THIS day in age that would think releasing a FLIGHT sim with only 2 flyable AC is ok. I think ROF "looks" amazing and the "potential" is there. But I'm not touching this one for about a year. Then we'll see if $50 will get you more than 3 planes. I've flown almost every single seater in OFF at least once and I can say that is one of my favorite aspects of the game, esspecially since im so new to 14-18 aircraft. S!

Yes, I will amend my previous statement. I was "assuming" that the 'tredmill argument' was that the planes forward motion was canceled out by the tredmill. (aka. NO forward motion) In THAT case then the aircraft would NOT take off. But like many have pointed out, a tredmill would not prevent the aircrafts forward momentum. S!

Beard, where in Tehama Co. abouts sir? I grew up in RedBluff and currently reside in Chico! -
Lift is created by airflow over the surface of the wings. Prop-wash alone would not create enough airflow sufficient enough to lift the plane into the air. Simply, any aircraft has a speed at which it can lift off (while within ground effect) and this speed may be slower than the actual airspeed needed (out of ground effect) to maintain flight. This speed (airspeed) will not be reached if the aircraft is unable to make forward progress (eg. on a tredmill). In short. NO! a plane would NOT become airborn if forward momentum and thus the necessary airflow is not achieved. This ofcourse is simply "in theory". The mythbusters project was so flawed it can't be used as a viable source on the subject. (yes i saw the episode and was unimpressed with their tests.) S!

Sorry Pol. You missed the point on my previous post. The point is that I the map NEVER crashes my game unless its a scramble mission. It has no effect on how close to the ground or my airfield, as I can open my map sitting on the field on any other mission. For that matter I can open up my map, take off, and do aerobatic manuvers at 50ft over the field while my buddies take off and no crash. It's ONLY on scramble missions "in my tests" that the map will crash my game. So that 'should' rule out video memory issues. Unless for some reason all the trees and hangars around my aeredrome are especially detailed and thus resource hogs on scramble missions alone? Anyway, I'm not trying to sound like an ingrate here. It's not a game breaker as I can simply 'advance time' every time i get a scramble mission and thus avoiding the issue altogether. But "I" believe it bears some looking into. Just my opinion as a concerned consumer. S!

If ya want to be a cowboy and all. Texas, or Wyoming would be your states. But Califoria has 'everything' Mountains, Ocean, Forrests, Rivers, etc. Just stay north of San Francisco and you can avoid all the "city-slickers" down in southern California. Northern california is almost its own state. 1/6 the population with ten times the natural beauty. lol I feel like one of those. "visit califonia" commercials. hehe S! HOmeboy -
Your longest lasting pilot
Macklroy replied to Launchbury's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Every time I think I find a machine I really fit into....I fly another and think...hmmmm. My current love is the SE5a. Started with the camel, then to the neup17, then tripe, now se5. maybe one of these days ill try the german crates. -
I can only speak from my experiences in OFF. But I have had 4 (that i can recall for sure) french pilots lost over the front lines because I busted up my plane on stressfull vertical manuvers. You may come to find that bad things tend to happen in higher frequency when they can cause the most distress (as covered in murphys law). If you "REALLY" want to test this theory. Take your "BEST" DID pilot and go do these stress manuver tests 20miles into enemy teritory. See if you dont shed a wing. S!

My longest lasting pilot hit 22 hours before he was killed in an accident on the runway, when his wingman got a little overzelous with the throttle and smashed into his craft killing him instantly. DOH! My second longest is my current pilot at 12hrs. -

I've used TS for a few years for a few different sims WdR, no worries m8. Mic just stoped working one day for some reason, and never bothered to replace it.
