File Name: Hunter FGA.71 / FR.71A File Submitter: paulopanz File Submitted: 29 April 2017 File Category: Hunter Hawker Hunter FGA.71 (FGA.9 ground-attack fighter for Chile) Hawker Hunter FR.71A (FR.10 reconnaissance aircraft for Chile) The Hawker Hunter Mark 71 was the designation given to a number of aircraft sold to Chile before the coup that brought General Pinochet to power in 1973. Chile purchased twenty eight F.G.A.Mark 71s and six F.R.Mark 71As. The F.G.A.Mark 71s were ordered in three batches. The first, of fifteen aircraft, was delivered between September 1966 and June 1968, the second, for nine aircraft, between December 1970 and September 1971 and the third, for four aircraft, between September 1973 and January 1974. Seven T.Mark 72 two-seat trainers were also purchased. During the coup that overthrew President Allende some of the Hawker Hunters were used to make rocket attacks on the Presidential Palace. By 1974 it was clear that the Pinochet government was committing atrocities and murdering its opponents. Britain imposed an embargo on military spares, and the number of serviceable Hunters began to decline. The relationship thawed dramatically after the Falklands War, in which Chile provided covert but valuable support to the British. In return a squadron of twelve ex-RAF Hunter F.G.A.Mark 9s were given to Chile, where they were stripped for spare parts. In 1983 the Chilean Hunters were upgraded (the Aquila programme). This saw them get updated cockpits, a radar warning receiver and a chaff/ flare dispenser.     The Israeli Air Force operated a license-manufactured version, the IAI Tzukit. While principally a trainer, it was used in the 1967 Six Day War by 147 Squadron as a close support aircraft, attacking targets on the Egyptian front during the first day of the war, when Israel's more capable combat aircraft were deployed on Operation Focus against Arab air bases. They were then deployed against Jordanian forces, including armour, on the West Bank. The Magister proved effective at the close-support mission albeit with heavy casualties, with six being lost. 9 former Israeli and 3 French Magisters were acquired by the Salvadoran Air Force and used as both trainers and ground attack aircraft in the Salvadoran Civil War using bombs and nose-mounted 7.62mm machine guns. None are recorded as being lost to enemy fire, but only five were in operational condition by the end of the war.     The Yak-23 was developed as a simple lightweight jet fighter, on Yakovlev's own initiative. It was a development of the earlier Yak-15 and Yak-17 fighters, retaining their non-conventional layout with a jet engine in the fuselage nose and exhaust under the cockpit, but the construction was all new. Its wings were derived from the Yak-19. The Yak-23 used a Soviet copy of the British Rolls-Royce Derwent V turbojet engine, produced as the Klimov RD-500. It first flew on July 8, 1947. After successful flights, it underwent state trials in 1948 and was accepted for series production. It was evaluated as highly maneuverable, with a good acceleration and take-off and climb capabilities thanks to high thrust-to-weight ratio. Faults were poor directional stability at speeds around Mach 0.86 and lack of cockpit pressurization. Despite being one of the best straight-wing jet fighters, it was inferior to new swept-wing designs.
