  1. I cannot, unfortunately, comment on this topic. I've never tried out a SSD, still too expensive. What I hear, what I read, with different games, in other forums, is that most people think it's beneficial and reduce a lot of stuttering. But I too have to confess, that I am a bit skeptical, about the SSD hype. Besides I don't see OFF accessing much the HD during the game. However I don't have any reason to doubt Tamper and Morris. So I'll have to accept their conclusions and hope for the day the price will fall. Now I ask what about a single SSD. What kind of performance can we expect? What I don't understand is the aggressiveness that was displayed in this thread. Surely people can have different opinions. I speaking for myself, like to hear what other fellows have to say about technical matters. I've been working in the field for more than 20 years and I've already learn a few things here, with people like Parky, Tamper, BirDogICT, almccoyjr, etc. I'm really very thankful to you gentleman.
  2. I don't advise any Registry Cleaners. Don't trust them. Whenever I feel I need a registry cleaner, I just do a clean install. It's painful, but it will works. Not that I'm suggesting you to take that route. It's too soon for you to have to do it. You've your machine for 2/3 months right? I don't think you're one of those crazy lunatics that when browsing through Internet, accepts every kind of thing. You seem to have knowledge above average about computers. So.... I'll PM you with one thing you might try, just to discard that might be the protection scheme.
  3. Does this silence mean, you've reinstalled your system?
  4. Parky, von Paulus, please advice

For me yes. You've green light. But don't forget to buy an extra, or even two, 120 fan. Parky advise Scythe. If they don't have it order from other place. Look at their official page. They sell it in a lot of places in Germany. This is not important... but it can help in cooling the rad and the CPU, specially if you're going to overclock it. Now just wait for the green light from Parky.
  5. Parky, von Paulus, please advice

No it isn't complicated. You need to get an extra 120 fan to do exactly the same thing as Parky did. It will help cooling. Show Parky's rig to your friend and he will understand what to do it.
  6. Parky, von Paulus, please advice

I see. By the way creaghorn. Who's is going to assemble? You or the guys at the shop?
  7. Windows 7 problems

Yes Ras I understand your frustration. almccoyjr idea is good.
  8. Parky, von Paulus, please advice

Yes. And I'd use your idea of assembling 120 two fan in the rad. One pushing and the other pulling. But I'm not sure he can do it in the rear. Maybe at the top.
  9. Is this only happening with OFF? Disable your Internet Security software. Roll back if possible to a time before the update. Try with other pilot. Don't use TrackIR. Disconnect USB devices just in case... Just ideas.... EDIT: What happen if you end the runndll processes in task manager? Do you have installed any process manager?
  10. Windows 7 problems

Frustrating. I can't see any reason. Sometimes protections can cause erratic behaviors. I suppose you've the CFS3 version is not the UBISOFT (DVD) one, right? You've to have the CD in the drive to play, right?

IMHO: I wouldn't use Corsair for memories. As far as I know Corsair memories, depending the chips they use, might be a good buy or a bad one. Talking with my dealers they have said to me that Corsair memories have an above average RMA (Return Merchandising) than other brands. Like I've told I'd go G.Skill or OCZ. I don't have any experience with Crucial. Kingston are usually slower, but are very, very stable. I'd go to G.Skill. 300W BeQuiet!, what's that? Power supply with 300? BeQuiet! is one of my favorite brands for PSU. They have great, great customer support as far as it goes my experience in dealing with them. But I thought you had a power supply? What is the brand, creaghorn? The case seems nice, but so far I've never used one. The CPU cooler is a passive one which means silence. But I don't have real experience with passive coolers. I saw a review giving it a good score. Interesting. As for the motherboard I wouldn't choose that one. It's a good mobo; good for overclocking, great performance, etc. But it isn't USB3 and SATA3. It doesn't make sense not to buy a board with that characteristics nowadays, even of you aren't planning using it for now. The PX58D Premium brings all these. But because it's a new model, maybe you can't find it in Germany yet. It's not essential to have USB3 and SATA3, but..... Let's hear what Parky says.
  12. Parky, von Paulus, please advice

It looks good and I'm it's a powerful rig. It's illogical and goes against everything I know about air flow. Did the H50's original package brought the fans for the rad? I too am using G.Skill. Only mine are PC12800@1600 cl7 1.6v. Stable and quick. Agree. I've overclocked mine I5-750@2.66Ghz to 3.2Ghz. I could go further but I'd probably have to mess with voltages. I've only push BCLK to 160 and the multiply with 20 (the "natural" multiplier of I5-750). Temperature rise 3 to 10 degrees with my actual air cooler. I've a Artic Cooler Pro 7, it's cheap but it's better than the original. So far 3.2 is enough. For people who don't want to mess with BIOS and want to do a small overclock, both Asus and Gigabyte, have software that deals with that. The Asus software will perform a serious of tests and will decide which overclock is suitable to your rig. The Gigabyte uses a different approach, they tested in the lab which values are best suitable for your CPU and they give you the chance to choose from low, medium and extreme overclocking. Regarded to the extreme options I always advised to avoid it. If you want to go extreme then do it yourself, by trying and changing BIOS values. One thing is for sure, for small overclocking, this new motherboards and new processors are much more easier to do it.
  13. Windows 7 problems

Interesting. But tell me, you only use the redistributable version, not the SDK, right? You don't need SDK right? Anyway the DirectX End User time has at least some dx9 files when I uncompress. But maybe it's like you say it doesn't have all.
  14. Windows 7 problems

Run it. Don't worry it won't mess really. And then you can run again that directx user end that you've download that will update whatever it will need to be.
  15. Windows 7 problems

almccoyjr could you tell me if installing last DirectX End-User Runtime that wouldn't also install that missing dll? Yes, the problem is that almost all my client now play on consoles. So unfortunately I don't get much paid for this kind of things. Sign of the times. And most of the PC gamers nowadays, like you Barkhorn, they really have very good computer/system knowledge and know what they are doing.
  16. Windows 7 problems

They are not Catalyst 8.7. Drivers version is different from Catalsyt version. I think driver version 8.7 correspond to 10.2 or 10.3 Catalyst. Otherwise if it was Catalyst 8.7 it wouldn't work at all, like you notice, Barkhorn. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't download and try the the last version. Something is very odd here.
  17. Windows 7 problems

What tranquilo suggests is that in the same tab where you defined to Run as Administrator in the cfs3.exe file, there is also the possibility to run in compatibility mode Windows XP (SP3). http://www.techiesou...mpatibility.png
  18. Windows 7 problems

Have you installed that file I told you?
  19. Windows 7 problems

Like Barkhorn1x suggests you should download the latest DirectX and install it by running this file. If this don't work you can run DXDIAG like Barkhorn1x told you. Ras, don't give up yet.
  20. Parky, von Paulus, please advice

I think they'll do. But Parky's probably will know for sure. EDIT: if you're gonna ask the OC values that Parky has maybe you should also have the same memories he has. When you're overclocking the CPU you're also affecting the memories. If you're going to overclock it's best to begin to read some tutorials concerning. It's more technical.
  21. Windows 7 problems

Have you set cfs3.exe to run as administrator? http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=25661

Still you need a case. I'd go to Cooler Master. My favorite is CM 690 II Advanced. But HAF 922 it's not bad but with a little more aggressive design. They aren't very expensive. http://www.comstern.de/Cooler-Master-CM-690-II-Advanced-3a15108639.htm http://www.comstern.de/Cooler-Master-HAF-922-RC-922M-KWN1-GP-3a15031793.htm As for the motherboard, you've Asus, Gigabyte or Evga. Parky's Asus PX58D-Premium it's great because already has USB3 and SATA3. Appraiserfl Asus Gene Rampage II it's a board that you can fall in love just by looking at it. It's top quality. But it isn't USB3 and SATA3, so... From Gigabyte you've GA-X58A-UD7 or even then new GA_X58A-UD9. If you don't want to spend so much money you've GA-X58A-UD5. Two problems with Gigabyte. The implementation of USB3 and SATA3 is inferior to the Asus one. Second problem, you've here people who might help by giving their BIOS overclock values if you go to Asus. The only advantage for choosing Gigabyte is that they have better quality of components in term of reliability and performance (less latencies problems I hear). From what I know, from talking with dealers, they have less RMA material from Gigabyte than from Asus. I've one and in spite of the problems above mentioned, I'm quite happy with it. But to be honest, I'd choose in your case the Asus PX58D-Premium. For the memory I'd choose GSKill @1800Mhz and not @1333Mhz as you suggested. You can go for OCZ also, very good brand also. Kingston if you want reliability. No problem if you've a retail version of Windows 7. Probably the only thing it will happen is that you'll have to activate it by phone and not by Internet. Art least that is what happened with me. I hope it's 64 bits version.

750 Power supply is more than enough. Like I've told I can only recommend Intel. As you've seen in the Tom's Hardware site, they consider for May the best CPU for gaming, costing around $200 the I5-750. The choose that because you can overclock easily. But if you want to spend a little more you can always go to the I7 class, which can brings more virtual cores to the already 4 real cores.. In most cases the virtual cores will not help now. But in future who knows. Look at the example of the rig appraiserfl assembled. With I7-930 and Asus motherboard. It's a good rig, only the graphic card it's not good for games. But that you don't need for now. If you plan to go Intel, you've to decide before the motherboard which CPU technology you want? I5-750, I7-860 or I7-930? The I5-750 has 4 real cores and no virtual cores runs at 2.66Ghz. The I7-860 has 4 real cores and 4 virtual cores runs at 2.8Ghz. Both of these use dual channel for memory. So you'll work with pairs. for example 2x2GB. The I7-930 has 4 real cores and 4 virtual cores and runs at 2.8Ghz. But this has a little difference it works with memory in triple channel, it means it work with triple memory. For example 3x2GB. As you know OFF prefer more clock speed than multicore. You might have to overclock it a bit. This in any of the above processors. But we can talk later about that. First CPU. I'd like people with AMD to give their opinion also and give configuration suggestions. As for the Windows, in legal terms I'm afraid you're obliged to buy a new version unless you bought a retail version and not a OEM version that comes with a new computer. In case of brand computers it's worst, because even if you want to forget the legal aspect, the thing usually won't work because it's hardware dependent.
  24. Parky, von Paulus, please advice

I think it's good idea. But... If you're going to buy a new, board and a new CPU, think in new technology with DD3. So you'd have to buy also memory. It doesn't make sense, to make those changes without thinking in "new". Otherwise don't spent your money. Give yourself a platform for three years. IMHO, a good plan should be like this: First choose a good case with enough inner space and a good Power supply (but I need to know what are the specs of yours). Second the CPU, motherboard and memory. Don't forget also Windows if you want to go legit. The Windows you have now, won't work in the new rig. In one year, not more than two, change graphic card and buy also an SSD drive. In three or at most four years begin the cycle again, if PC computers exist at the time. Two considerations: First you've to choose if you want Intel or AMD technology. This will influence the motherboard. I'm an Intel guy, but I'm not against AMD products. Only in my line of work, people usually prefer Intel. So for me it's Intel. Second consideration and most important. You must think in terms of balance. It doesn't matter to have a good CPU if you have a bad graphic card for example. Think always in term of the future. If you're only interest in playing OFF than I would advise for you to look to clock speed instead of multi cores. But if you want a machine to play something more you must also look to multi core. So balance and the capability of future overclocking might be important. In my case I choose a I5 750 running at 2.66Ghz. It has 4 real cores. 2.66 it's not bad for OFF but not ideal. But with a little overclocking I was able to raise 20% an now I'm at 3.2Ghz without any problem. I did had this consideration when I upgraded my machine. A link with an article about CPU's.
  25. And welcome back also to you Bullethead.
