Semi related question, so then what does the "average altitude" setting actually do.
Hi Redpiano;
I'm not sure I understand your term "average altitude". There are three radial buttons in the workshop screen under the heading "Player Flight Altitude"
These buttons are as follows:
High up to 18,000
Medium up to 10,000
Low up to 3000
If you are not referring to the above, then please elaborate.

Robert and Shiloh, I believe the max ceiling setting is only for your campaigns and missions. It will not affect your ability to climb above those settings but only keeps the AI at or below them. Robert, to you question about getting the Camel to it's max ceiling, it is honestly all about finessing the beast. The Camel abhors a ham-fisted pilot and will slap him down in short order. Her traits only get worse at high altitudes. If you fly with manual throttle control, at take-off click back slowly until you hear your RPMs just start to drop, then come back up 2 or 3 clicks. Adjust again at around 6,000', again at around 9,000', and once more at around 13,000'. The rate of climb up to 10,000' is quite good, after that it becomes tedious, and at 16,000' it is downright unbearable. Figure about 40 minutes and 20% of your fuel to hit 18,500'. And, if you have lots of time you can eke out about 19,700'. But you will need the patience of Job to do it.
Hi Lou;
I tried out your suggestion today and made some headway (or should I say altitude!).
I followed your instructions as best I could since I used my force feedback for throttle and not manual keypad. I didn't notice so much of an effect in throttle cut back as I did by reducing mixture as I made altitude in order to smooth out the engine.
From 10,000 ft to 12,300 feet my rate of climb was 100ft per 16 seconds wrist watch time at airspeed of 50 with pitch of approx 9.50 to 9.70
From 12,300 ft to 13,000 feet my rate of climb was 100ft per 20 to 25 seconds wrist watch time at airspeed of 70 with pitch of approx 9.25 to 9.40
At this point I had to terminate the exercise due to personal time constraints but I was still climbing, albeit very slowly. I can't imagine trying this during a mission or I would be there all day.
I think I'll restrict my AI to 10,000 as was suggested.
As you said, it's very tedious and handling is very touchy.

Lou, Thanks for your response. I am going to experiment with your suggestions to see what Ican achieve. Do you know if this was typical of the real aircraft, or just a modeling issue in OFF?
All the Best! Cheerio!

Hi Oltham;
In answer to your question it means that the exchange rates are comparable and that the cost of the book is about the same in both countries. These are regular prices, not discounts. I hope I am explaining this clearly for you.

Ok Shiloh;
I tried setting the the altitude to "High" in the workshop and then went to quick combat with a Camel setting the altitude to 15000 at startup. As soon as the sim started I experienced engine cut out so I cut back the mixture about 20 clicks with "CTRL -" key combinations to no avail. The engine continued to cut out until I reached 10,000. I was able to coach it back up to 10,600 before I lost all forward speed and could not maintain any forward motion even in level flight.
Can anyone shed any light on what I need to do to gain the altitude above 10,600. I have tried working the mixture up to richer settings and also reducing to no significant effect. The best I could achieve in altitude was with the 20 clicks reduction in normal mixture settings at ground level.

Thanks for your reply Olham. The conversion from $34.99 canadian to Euro is as of today 26.67 so the price on Amazon is in the ballpark.
Today I just picked up "The Black Flight" The memoir of Raymond Collishaw, published by CEF Books (2008) in Soft cover which currently sells for $26.94 Canadian.
There is a militaria / Used and new book store near me called "The Grenadier" which is a fantastic resource for old and rare militaria books. The web site is www.grenadiermilitaria.com.
You might enjoy checking it out.

Have they 'upped it' then?...used to be 1 gig.
If so, that'll be doubly handy!
In response to your ?: You may be correct, but I know that if you promote others to use the facility they up your limit for each individual you add and this applies to the individual as well.
I happened to inherit my limit due to participation with other users. In summary, the more who share, the more space u get!
The only draw back is that in busy times I think the uploads may be throttled somewhat. I haven't confirmed this but suspect it. 1.5 gig file upload took approx 5 hours on a busy saturday afternoon so if u are in a hurry this could be an issue but for me it typically isn't.
Hope that helps

Have you tried adjusting your max ceiling in workshops to 18,000 ft.?
Shiloh;
Thanks for the tip. I just never thought to look at that. Do you know if the workshop settings will apply equally to all aircraft or will each aircraft have it's own limits?

Hi Folks;
Now that Historical Books are being discussed, specifically "Flying Fury", I was wondering if anyone has seen the hardcopy of "William Barker VC" by "John Wiley & Sons Canada, Ltd". The Author is Wayne Ralph. It is generally available in the "Chapters" book stores in Canada. It lists for $34.99 Canadian / $28.95 US 18.99 pounds UK.
I'm curious to know if it is available in other countries.
Regards to all

I know the boys in the RFC were able to take their Camels well above 15,000 but I can't seem to coax my Camel above 10,000 even when I lean out the mixture.
Is this a limitation in OFF or am I doing something wrong here?
Regards to all
OOPS! I meant to post this in the Help section!

Well, may I put my two cents worth in here?
I for one do not have any problems with the sound! My wife won't let me turn the volume up enough to enjoy it!!:lol:
I wait patiently until she goes on a shopping spree and then I have my fun at the stick!!!

I'm having a problem getting Bandicam to work with OFF. It literally does not appear to realize that OFF is the target window. Anyone else having this issue?
As for Bandicam vs Fraps, it's a toss up. Fraps has better video quality, but the size of the file is so huge that I have to run it through a video converter program in order to make it small enough to upload to youtube. Bandicam's video isn't as clear as Fraps, however by the time youtube gets done butchering the quality of a Fraps recording, a lot of the detail is gone anyways, making it a bit of a wash.
I'll have to give Playclaw 3 a try Pol. Sounds like it might be worth a look if it has so more configuration options.

Some interesting observations Hellshade!
I have recently discovered another tool which is very useful in sharing large files with other people. You may already be aware of it. It is called "DropBox". It initially gives you 2 gig of space for sharing for free.
It is a cloud sharing interface which allows you to set up directories and sharing options on your computer which are then emulated on a cloud server which is freeware based.
You can then give users access to these cloud directories and contents. Any time you drop a file in one of the directories on your computer it is immediately uploaded to the corresponding directory on the cloud. Any user who has access and is running DropBox immediately has the file downloaded into his corresponding directory for access. Once you set it up you can basically forget about file handling and just drop files into your folders on your
computer.

Well, thanks for the headsup re: New Fraps...I have upgraded it..and yes, a great improvement on previous releases!
I would (now) put them about level in quality!
Thanks for your testing and reporting back!!
I didn't want to purchase another product and wasn't sure the free ware version would be as good as the purchased version.

Nothing like a good British pint to put things right!!!

Having used both..I have to say (after using it for a small Video)...Bandicam is superior to fraps imho.
It's intuative (like Fraps)....but the quality of the recording is much clearer
Greetings Widowmaker!!
I currently use Fraps and just received an upgrade to V3.4.7, Build 13808. I found that the latest Fraps has a considerable improvement in quality over the past version. Can I assume we are comparing Bandicam to this veresion?

Oh, I'm sure that the devs have detailed info about these files, otherwise, how could they design the game as it is?
What I meant is that we users don't have detailed knowledge of the dossiers files, not the devs. As to why they haven't answered, I guess they want to preserve a little mystery! Also, once people start fooling around with the dossier files, then it would become impossible to provide support, since everyone might have different dossier files or aircraft rosters from the "standard" installation.
I hear you loud and clear. That being said there are times when I would like to try some tailoring. I guess if a map of the files was available and the default settings defined, it would be easy to reset any altered files.
Would you concur with that? It would eliminate uneducated changes that might be attempted in experimentation.

The title seems rather to be "Sapper Martin" ? I found it on EBAY:
http://www.ebay.de/s..._arr%3D1&_rdc=1
Personally, I have yet to read most of the well known books by WW1 flyers - like "Flying Fury";
so - no, I haven't read it yet.
Funny: the name Richard van Emden. "Van" is the Dutch word for from; so in English it would be "from Emden".
And Emden is a German harbour town, only 30 km of my birthplace. The world is a small precious pearl.
Olthan you are correct on both accounts The title is "Sapper Martin" and I agree with you regarding origin of name Richard van Emden.
I do feel that this book is a great read since it truly reflect the emotional mind set of the author.
Have a great day

I hope they won't choose another important WW1 date - the end of the war. That would be November then.
Hey Oltham!! Would that be November 2018!!!! :rofl:

I think HPW is right. I had a problem with a chosen Fighter squadron being allocated bomber missions and found that the relevant file had the role set to 'bomber', despite the unit being chosen from the list of 'fighter' squadrons presented when creating my pilot. As with your pilotdossier edit, hand-editing the squadron role back to 'fighter' had no effect - it reverted on restarting the sim. The dev's answer was on this forum not long ago but it amounted to what HPW said, there's a look-up master table in a file somewhere, which may or may not be locate-able and editable, which over-writes some kinds of hand-edits in these files.
I have been pondering this issue for some time and can't seem to understand how the devs built P3 and now P4 without detailed knowledge of the dossier files. Does that make sense to anyone?
If there is some knowledge on this file type, who would have it or who could I request it from?
Don't get me wrong, this is not a criticism, just a search for knowledge and understanding!

I see quite a few have read this post! Has anyone else read the book?

It's kind of like trying to hit the lottery number!!! I'll take my birthday JUly 10th!

Cheers to all!!

I just finished reading The Secret Great War Diary of Jack Martin Published by Bloomsbury in England. Richard Van Emden wrote the Introduction and did the Editing.
The book covers his service from 17th September 1916 to 3rd February 1919. It is an amazing read and unencumbered in any way by the editor. You feel that you just found his diaries and are reading them first hand.
This is a must read for any historian of the Great War for insight into the enlisted mans experience! I live in Ontario Canada and found this book at Chapters book store on sale for $7.99 (It is 272 pages in length with 4 photo plates in the middle)
Extract from the front sleeve:
Albert John (Jack) Martin was a 31 year old Admiralty clerk when he was called up into the army in early 1916. Throughout his service with the Royal Engineers (the Sappers), he wrote in secret because men at the front wee forbidden to keep diaries. When he returned home he told no one about them. Bundled up in the attic, they remained undiscovered until his grandson came across them in 1999.
Written in a clear, elogant, often humorous style, Jack Martinès diary reveals a distinctive and compelling mind, presenting the reality of war with heartbreaking clarity. From his arrival in France during the Battle of the Somme, through the onslaughts at Messines and Ypres and the German offensive of 1918, to the Armistice, we see the Great War as it was lived and fought by the ordinary Tommy.
Martin describes the reality of life at the front - the ever-present fear of death, the lonliness, and the appalling conditions in which the men lived and died - but also the support of friends and joy at the arrival of parcels from loved ones at home. Through it all, Martin maintains an extraordinary hamanity and tranquility of spirit, underpinned by a wry humour.

Olham;
After discovering your post on the Graphics setup sticky, I implemented your detailed description and discovered a whole new wonderful world of immersion in OFF. It prompted me to recall how many of your efforts have aided me in the recent past, so I Just want to express my thanks for the many things you have done that have helped me in discovering the wonders under the sheets of OFF. Without all the gifts of help you have left on this board, I would probably still be in the dark as to the full capabilities of OFF.
On behalf of my self and I'm sure of many of the members of the OFF board, I wish to thank you for all your contributions and assistance.
And I hope all this praise doesn't go to your head and fog your reaction time during an OFF combat mission!!

Shot down three times during the Battle of Cambrai
Well done Oltham!!!
Nice piece of research to go with the written history! I think it should be added to the Historical Archive on the OFF Forum.
Cudos to you! :good:
