As I recall, all the Americans that had been held in Luft Stalag III were transferred BEFORE the actual escape attempt. However, Hollywood would never let FACTS get in the way of a good story!!!!!! The British allies and their bretheren did make a great story and just half of it was told in the movie, The Great Escape. After the war many of those responsible for the murders of the prisoners were tracked down. A fantastic achievement all round. A documentary about Escapes of WW@ has been shown on the Discovery Channel, and one of the main escapees,Wally Floody is featured. But, it is a great guy flick! No chicks................just great action, good friends, and ultimate sacrifice for each other. The music ain't bad either!!!!

Best book on the air war in WWI?
Kingkat replied to rwmarth's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I recommend the Osprey Military Series. Very detailed and very informative about specific airplanes and their aces. However for single volumes I recommend two: Over The Battlefronts, by Peter Kilduff and Aces And Airmen of World War 1, by Alan C. Wood. Both are excellent reads. It really depends on interest and taste. Enjoy the journey. -
Best advice!!!!! All of us "newbies" need to heed this. I tried to start in 1918......................realistic, hard mode...............got my tail fin shot to hell......................going back a little. Gonna start in 1917. Need to start slower..............take some time.....................not worry about score......................staying alive is the key. Maybe the Allies are better to start with. SE5a a good kite. WOW is this game fun! I can't stop reading about it, researching it, buying more books about the air war. Did anyone know that the "first" DR1 had NO STRUTS? The cantilever wings were strong enough without them? All three of them, but the test pilots were frightened by the wings moving about and thought it was unstable,so struts were added? Found that the other day while looking up what the different characteristics of planes during WW1 were. This game just keeps getting better and better.

Have been flying a little. Mostly quick scenarios and combat, and now I would like a little more realism. I already have my skill level set abouve 100, (sort of DiD stuff) but want a little more acrtion. Have been flying the SE5a. Great kite. When should I start? 1918? Which Squadron? Any suggestions? I prefer a little later in the war, as the Americans begin to arrive. Besides I would like to play several scenarios for each of the services. A little RFC/RAF, German and Americans. I tried a Campaign today, but had very little luck. I think I got a little anxious, and hit the "X" key too often, and the program quit. Never found any enemies, or got to complete the mission. All of you here seem very knowledgable about how this game works. Thankyou for the help.

What Period Should I Start In?
Kingkat replied to Kingkat's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
The current home town is Franklin,Tennessee. Just a little south of Nashville. I thank all of you for the great advice. THAT stuff needs to be written down and put on the forum somewhere. Great info. !!!!!!!! I am very curious about the "few" Americans that were attached to the RFC/RAF as well. Always a great story there. I also like to fly for the "other side" sometimes. With all the great machines and stuff................especially Richtoffen, Udet, etc. I shall adjust the Workshop area tonight! Thankyou all so very much for the advice I shall give an after-action report as soon as I am done flying..........or being shot down in flames! -
Hop over to the www.theareodrome.com they have a great selection of suggested readings. If you are interested in learning about the air war. Some great books. Osprey Publishing has wonderful books too. Also, many people here have many favorite books they recommend for reading. Depends on whether you prefer Allies or the Central Powers. Watch the movie, The Blue Max. A little dated, but a good intro to the WW1 flyers. Enjoy........................its all about the journey. Hope to see you in the sky.

The CHILDREN today are far too smart to just go after "loose change". They realise the value of paper money!!!!!! To them it DOES grow on trees.............your parents always have some to give AND............even after that has run out ..................there is always PLASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I only wish I had ME as a PARENT so generous (as I was to my sons).....................nothing ever changes. LOL Laughing with you there my friend. But then again, after all, I AM Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy AND the guy who buys whatever SHE requires.............I deserved the small gift!!!!

Screen Shots, Videos, Media, OFF Posters
Kingkat replied to MK2's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I remember (as a small kid) my grandfather, who did not serve during the war, had some "postcards" he kept in an old album. After he passed away, I remember my father and I were looking through his stuff. Found a few cards similar to the...........uh..............lovely young lady writing to her intended. Some of the other young ladies were not as fortunate to have as much clothing on while being photographed. I guess, regardless of the time, or the conflict, the "Boys" need to be reminded of some of the reasons why they go to war! Ce le Guerre -
Thankyou for all the posts. I just received my TrackIR4 Pro in the mail yesterday, and just finished installing it. No CD, just got on the website and DL'd it. That is a good way to go. Not sure if the HAT Clip or the HEADSET clip is best. All I can say is OMG.............where has THIS device been all my life...? I flew around on FreeFlight and was able to fly WITH a group of DVII !!!! Could see them wherever they flew, flew around them.........wow........just awesome! It IS the best investment I have made for a game in a long time. All I can to say to anyone thinking about this game or device..............BUY IT! Makes a flight sim even more fun and immersive! Totally changes how you play the game. Actually puts you in the cockpit. (even the wifey was impressed with how it worked.......... .......but then again she knows that she's married to a little boy........who loves to play games......... .........as long as I am home for supper)

Thankyou for the help. I just received the game in the mail today and will DL it now. Looking foward to some real action. If I get my courage up.............I might even fly on-line!!!!!!

Thanks for the information. I think I want the one that attaches to a headset. I have watched a few vids at YouTube, and it makes the game seem a little better than using just the Hat Switch on the JS.
