DiD IV Campaign - Flight reports & Player instructions
epower replied to epower's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Wonderful to see the Campaign underway once again. Some superb pics...and on that topic, Public Service Announcement: It is critical that we use the Gallery (NOT the attachment function) when posting pics. CombatAce differs significantly from our previous home at SimHQ in the way the site manages uploaded images. In short, Gallery offers unlimited storage, Attachment does not. I've included a more detailed explanation as to why this is important as well as instructions on how to create Gallery Albums in the modified second link in this thread HERE -

We will use this current thread for reports. -
Thanks for the input Pol and VonS. The idea is to make it more difficult for the player to snipe from distance. If I reset the shooting range to stock then I fear the AI will exhaust all ammo before getting into gun range (<200m). I'm away this weekend but will definitely revisit this. Happy New Year!

Carrick - DiD 3, and the upcoming conclusion of Oliver's Tale if you're interested, will remain at SimHQ. DiD IV (We DiD it Again!) will live here at CombatAce. Alistair Sim as Scrooge. Classic stuff. Great to have you with us once again. Now I won't have to go scouring the net for pictures of Nurses. Whew! -

Becker, I’m traveling and away from my main computer and the particulars of Jara’s tracer mod but scanning my old messages with Raine on this very subject I believe early RFC tracer had a phosphorus base and left a white trail for about a hundred yards. The SPK mark VII-T tracer round (a.k.a. "Sparklet ammunition") was introduced in July 1916. It used a combination of magnesium and barium peroxide, creating a bright colourless light. So I’d say trailer smoke only for RFC until July 1916. I’ll need to check what the French were using. The Germans were late to the game. If I recall correctly, they began using tracer only at the end of 1916 or so. There's was phosphorus-based and left a white smoke trail rather than a glowing light. Pilots reported being able to smell near misses. Effectsnotracer is likely the way to go for the early German AC but let me confirm when I get home early next week. Cheers -

How to post pictures It is imperative that we use the Gallery and Member Albums, NOT the Attachments function, for the simple reason that Gallery use is unlimited whereas Attachment storage is limited. When the attachment space reaches capacity a member will need to delete older attachments to free up storage space. Unfortunately, removal of old attachments breaks links or removes images in their original post where the image used to reside. Few things on the internet are more dispiriting a broken picture link. The DiD IV Campaign thread when complete in three years time will stand as a historical narrative and as such must remain intact for the future. Please make the effort to protect and preserve the thread. Listed below are detailed instructions for posting pics. <if there's a faster way to do this please PM me> Create an Album Click 'Gallery' on the upper left of page Click the green "Add Images' button which will bring up the 'Select Category' drop down menu Click 'Member's Albums' which will take you to the Create Album screen. Type a name for your album, then click the 'Create New Album' button. Add images if you have them at the ready, otherwise click the 'X' upper right to close the window. Add Images to Album Click on your name bar on upper right of page and select profile from the drop down menu Select the blue 'Albums' tab at far right. Choose your Album or create a new one and follow the prompts. Create bookmark for said Album. Add Pictures to your Post (epower edit 28 Jan 2023) Upload images to Album In the desired location in your post, click "Insert other media" lower right Select "Insert existing attachment" from the dropdown menu. Click "Gallery Images" upper left, then select the appropriate image checkmark. Click the green "Insert Selected" lower right and you're home. A DiD thread can be incredibly pic heavy. Even the mighty 400mb limit of an Elite Member (see below) won't be sufficient. For reference, in 21 months of DiD3, I uploaded 930 pics, each of which averaged 900kb in size. <maths------> 837MB. Handy Site Information A site familiarization post can be found HERE Erik the official Site Serf very kindly provided me with info below: The gallery uses compression that images stored in the forum section do not, so we offer both options. The gallery is unlimited use per member. The member attachment space is where images are stored that are attached directly in the forum post. Each member dependent on member rank, based on post count, will have a maximum amount of storage available to them in the forum. When that space becomes full a member will need to manage their stored items in their area to delete older items to free up storage space they can reuse. NEW members can store up to 50MB and have 30 minutes to edit their own posts. JUNIOR members can store up to 75MB and have 60 minutes to edit their own posts. VALUED Members can store up to 100MB and have 120 minutes to edit their own posts. SENIOR members can store up to 200MB and can edit their own posts indefinitely. ELITE members can store up to 400MB and can edit their own posts indefinitely. Purchasing a subscription plan lifts the storage limit while a subscription is active for any member regardless of rank. <epower edit - This is a great way to support the site. That said, please use a Gallery Album anyway to post pics so the thread stays clean for the future> -

24 Sqn RAF aircraft should all be Vipers in 1918
epower posted a topic in WOFF/WOTR - FAQ/Technical Issues
Flying 24 Sqn in the DID. Current date is July 1918. Problem: Historical Aces who should be flying Vipers are stuck in SE5a. This is playing merry hell with formation flying at higher altitudes as the Hispano-engined craft struggle to keep up with the higher compression Wolseley Vipers. (see roster below) I checked the 24 squadron enlistment screens from March 1918 thru end of war, and the lowest rank pilot in 24 consistently fly an SE5a. This is historically inaccurate as 24 Sqn exchanged all their Hispano SE5as for Vipers between March 12 - 16, 1918. (Record from official documents in spreadsheet below) I quote the personal diary of 24 Sqn CO, Major Vyvyan Robeson from Capt. A.E. Illingworth's 'History of 24 Squadron,' page 32: "16th Mar., 1918. -- Exit the last of our 4-blader 200hp S.E. 5's, in exchange for the 180 h.p. non-geared 'Viper' S.E. 5's. We are very pleased with the new machines and are in luck being the first squadron to get them." Solution: Change 24 Sqn allotment to Vipers for all ranks from March 18, 1918 onwards. I do hope that's an easy fix. Thanks very much, -
gaw - sorry to hear that. My only noticeable frame rate drop happened but for a few seconds when I was strafing 6 parked DFWs. Not recommended , btw, as all the gunners remain active and will ventilate you most profoundly. Would you mind posting your system specs for reference. Cheers.

Oh Hell. The Fokker DVII. Just when I'd grown accustomed to those pesky DR1s. This Fokker chap becomes tedious...

Se5a Lewis - fire separately from Vickers?

Classic stuff. Now you've done it , Catch, luring me down another rabbit hole. HERE is a link to the complete film "The Rink" (1916) Sir Cecil Seltzer, C.O.D. Sounds like a good name for a Wing Commander. -

BB - My my, aren't we judgy. Truth is I was long a fan of the single malts, Oban and Talisker being my favorites but as I grew older, the morning brain dwarf with the ice pick started showing up. No idea why. Good old "Murican Bourbon on the other hand treats me more gently the next day. Catch - Look closer, the tumbler isn't quite empty... Funny you should mention CC. You'll appreciate this. When I was a lad in the early 70s, my father would take me to an old theater in the Fairfax section of Los Angeles. It was run by an elderly couple who maintained, apparently, an archive of original newsreels, celluloid prints of old Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton films among others. Talk about time Machine! I don't recall seeing any of the great war 2 reelers though. Rick Rawlings - Oh, I think you'd be surprised by how much oomph those Pebble V3 speakers pack. In any event, I fly with Arctis 7 Steelseries headphones for the important missions like those of the DID Campaign. As for the Sopwith grip, it has completely transformed WOFF flying on a number of levels, not the least of which is the added immersion factor when it comes time to reload the Lewis gun. -
Se5a Lewis - fire separately from Vickers?
epower replied to catch's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
My Dear Catch, So very sorry that you spilled your single malt. That doesn't sound very pleasant. I would have thought a man of discernment and sophistication, one who holds the immortal Roger Livesey in such high regard, would have a specially designed single malt holder. I understand that 22 years hence a Hun named Adolf Galland will install a cigar holder of similarly inspired design in his BF-109. Once you've secured said single malt, I do hope you'll give my protocol a try. Pushing buttons, while amusing for a short while, soon loses immersion. Each must fly as he sees fit but I'm just suggesting that there are other options. Example in pic below. Note the shocking absence of bourbon holder mid left. Cheers! p.s. I hear you re: the wishlist item. Logged that one on the SimHQ thread many moons ago. -
Loving the new Lewis gun reload feature. I won't say that it nerfs the SE5a but it will definitely bring kill numbers more into alignment with historical CRs mentioning "drew away to change drum.' Very cool. FYI, the reload feature is NOT a discreet key press but a key repeat. Very Awkward and I hope the Devs will consider changing this feature. Holding down the Lewis reload Key combo 'CTRL SHIFT + G' will effectively toss your spare drums overboard. One discreet key press is the way to go otherwise you will see the "Drums remaining" spin down to zero. I have kept the key combo at the admittedly awkward 3 finger stretch press in order to simulate the difficulty of changing out a Lewis drum for purposes of immersion but this feature will be frustrating and off-putting to a new player.

Safety belts for pilots in WW1
epower replied to Becker02's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
In 1917, Oliver Manners Sutton of No 54 Sqn. RFC invented the Harness which bears his name and became standard issue for the next 30+ years. Annoyingly, Sutton Harness does not have a Wikipedia page but if you google it you'll see numerous sites which detail the construction. The three key features being shoulder and hip belts The single D pin release a single rear attach point allowing side to side movement by the pilot There's one at this link. It's the WW2 variant but the design didn't change much between the wars. https://www.historicflyingclothing.com/en-GB/raf-aircraft-parts/raf-aircraft-sutton-harness/prod_10252 -
Se5a Lewis - fire separately from Vickers?
epower replied to catch's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Catch, I can only imagine programming an upwards firing Lewis to be a staggering amount of work. The whys and wherefore are a topic best left for a separate thread. As for increasing the difficulty of the reload, more in keeping with Cecil Lewis' description during his 1963 BBC Great war interview, simply use the following protocol: All key combinations must require the use of both hands. Left hand on the shift or Control Key, Right hand on the G key. If you're not flying straight and level when you do this, good luck and God bless. To simulate the changing of the drum you can do what I do and set a desk lamp over the monitor which you then need to place your hand upon for a slow count of 6 before hitting the reload key. For early war AC lacking a Foster mount, I suggest remapping the reload command to a two key press - L Shift+ R perhaps. Make sure stand up at your desk/ Simpit and perform the same slow count of six, before pressing the two keys. -
Low mist and rain conditions for a 0445 dawn patrol on April 14, 1918. Flying from Bertangles West. Was seeing what the 'other' General Haig might describe as the Vortex of Clarity. Specifically, a circle clear view whereas the rest of my vision was misted. Screens attached.

Hospital time advance hits end of month wall
epower posted a topic in WOFF/WOTR - FAQ/Technical Issues
Got jumped by 7 of the Baron's men, who shot my DID character about and sent him to hospital for 12 days, the swines. Wounding occurred on 24 April 1918. Exit screen attached showed 12 days elapsed but the game returned pilot to action on May 1, 1918. I'm not certain but I believe I remember the same thing happening in WOFF PE when he was wounded on 26 August 1917, and the program returned him to action on Sept 1, rather than the stated 10 days later. Not game breaking by any means since one can time advance to the correct date but thought you should know just in case it's connected to something else. Cheers
