Good Story of Honor in Warfare
HumanDrone replied to SteveLohr's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I agree with Jonathan when he says you don't want to come out of it insane... or perhpas psychopathic! Though I've never been in such a situation, and God help us all, hope we never are. I do understand JFM's points - we are at the extremeties of human cruelty here, and it just isn't easy to say what we'd do. Another interesting tidbit is that Stigler, when flting the Me-262, was flying with the noted ace Galland - they often flew in each other's aircraft, by my understanding. -
Best to you, sir and a speedy recovery! I know what it's like to have a bad year, somebody says "God go with you" and you think, "Yeah, about that...?!" So you have my prayers, and thanks that you are still on the green side of the grass!

OT WWII bomb hit app > London
HumanDrone replied to Britisheh's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I've had two occasions to be in places famous for such activity - London and Pearl Harbor - and having lived a very comfortable life in Southwest Pennsylvania, found it astounding to consider the scenes I was viewing, except with the addition of bombers in the sky, flak, gunfire, explosions, screams of the wounded, dying, shocked and grieving, etc.-- but wow, that map is an eye-opener! Thanks for that, and Merry Christmas! -

That's one thing I like about this group. We're not a bunch of "Internet tough guys." You're right of course. We only hope we'd obey the better part of us. -

Well, Olham, Jim is right about the line of malarkey, I'll give him that - writers are given to sentamentalism, and we are all given to making the past better than it was! And yes indeed, they were able to wreak more havoc, perhaps even, as Jim says, kill many more people because of Herr Stigler's honorable decision. Still, in my mind, you do what is right. Stigler's words will speak for themseves, plenty have been recorded. Lt. Stigler was acting more than emotionally - he was indeed acting as a human being in the term's fullest sense, both emotionally and rationally - trained to be honorable by his upbringing and even so ordered by his commander, who told his men "You are fighter pilots. If I ever see you shoot a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself." His rosary beads, that he carried with him when he flew, had the paint worn off of them. -

Thanks, that's nice - a lot of good biographical info on Lt. Stigler. I may just have another book on my Christmas list. -

ndicki over at sim-outhouse actually created a skin for Stigler's Bf-109. He has good records of squadron markings, etc. I owe him a writeup of the incident for the download package. I'd corresponded with John Shaw (of Valor Studios, who created the painting in the linked article), who sent us a better picture of Stigler's "Eva" personal artwork so that Nigel could replicate it for the skin. I don't know if Nigel ever uploaded those or not, like I said, I never did my part (blush). He also did a "quick'n'dirty" skin for Charlie Brown's B-17 "Ye Olde Pub", but I'm ashamed I've never gotten back with him. Real life's a bear... anyway, if you fly CFS3 ETO, you should be able to fly Stigler's Bf-109, if he's uploaded the skin. My understanding is that he has a very good BF-109 aircraft that the skin works with. -

A Christmas Mission Pilots needed
HumanDrone replied to HouseHobbit's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Naw, Santa ought to be able to out-fly these old crates any day! Oh, and I second rjw's pre-mission check. My daughter used to have two large dogs, I always had to mow the lawn with my mouth shut! -

Setting the FOV - Field of View
HumanDrone replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Yessir, I see what you mean (and of course have experienced it...). And you seem perfectly capable of handling the math, so I'll leave it to you. What I take from what you said above is that the workshop settings of "up" and "down" would seem to set degrees above horizontal (for "up") and degrees below horizontal (for "down"; then the program uses the total angle to calculate the horizontal FOV angle from the total vertical angle (or something like that). If that's the case, it must be a holdover from pre-TrackIR days! Since all that zoom should do is lower the FOV angles (proportionately, one would hope), it seems to me that if you get the no-zoom angles, distance to monitor, etc, correct then it's all good from there. But it seems to me that "distance to monitor" is a key part part of this. Won't our wives/girlfirends (or in a few cases, husbands/boyfirends) love this! Us sitting there with a tape measure from our schnozzola to the screen! Anyway, good luck! If by any chance you need a hand, holler. -

@Olham: Not me! Blubber is my chief component! @JimAtrill: (commenting on yor reply to Herr Prop, since we cross posted...) Yes, indeed, people do greet one another more frequently. It's one thing I like about being a semi-rural American. It's been years since I've had much time at the Air Force museum, though we did get some time at the Smithsonian in DC a few years back - I'd like to go again now that they have a Shuttle. I recently flew American Air Lines back form Montevideo, Uruguay - fortunately on business, and so I was able to go 1st class - and it was a very memorable trip, impeccable service, food and the aircraft (B767) was top notch, with power for my laptop, etc. I don't do Delta much. -

Man, CaptSopwith, if these guys were getting paid for all this, they could hire you for a marketing director! Okay, I'm thinking even MORE seriously about this now... and I don't even know when I'll be able to "fly" again! -

Small world, JimAttrill. I was just in Maysville, KY, which is about 70 miles upriver from Cincinnati; been to and through "Cincy" (and stayed in Florence, KY) a number of times. And yes, they are pleasant folk down that way - as, I hope, we Pittsburghers are as well. How far upriver did you go? Pittsburgh is a long haul, but the American Queen is supposed to be renewing cruises here all the way from New Orleans! -

Well now wait a minute - if we can't have any all-out drunken brawls in the officer's mess, what's the point? Anyway, thanks for that. I wonder how much of this stuff you guys keep coming up with will be sucked up into WOFF? These poor devs are trying to get out something demonstrably better than HiTR and you guys keep improving THAT! What a horse race! It still amazes me how much can be done with ancient computer code; could you imagine what they could do if the core code was optimized for modern hardware? And speaking of all-out brawls, and Christmas cheer, and all that, I wonder when the BOC Christmas Party will start? It seems a bit early yet, but I'm looking for a good video link to "Snoopy's Christmas" to get it started... -
Setting the FOV - Field of View
HumanDrone replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
That's all right. I'm using a 23" monitor, and hadn't fancied getting that close anyhow. And that concerned me about your settings anyway, as I would think that, as you say, if you are trying to simulate a 60° wide FOV (for instance) that you should be in such a position that the edges of your screen subtend an angle of 60° with your eye position at the angle's vertex. That's a lot closer than I can comfortable sit. Guess it's time for a new 40" monitor! (the Human Drone wanders off, whistling "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas"...) -

Well, it sure ain't me, at 57 I'm middle of the pack. Hauksbee will be tough to beat. I recall an 80-something guy over at sim-outhouse, flying CFS3 - ETO. God bless our elder statesmen, stay tough! -

For those who don't have Excel, Open Office should be able to open Lothar's sheet. It's an older format Excel file, so the spreadsheet app in Open Office ought to handle it easily. -
OFFbase Update: An Ode to the OFF Community
HumanDrone replied to Lothar of the Hill People's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I have to say my response is similar to Olham's - I haven't been able to fly for a while. But this is starting to make my mouth water. Like Herr Olham, managing the mods is an issue; I've never flown in campaign mode, etc, and to be quite honest, the role playing between flights... well, what flights in my case! Still, if I go with this I'll give it a whirl. But even in real life, the "office politics" are of little interest to me; I have a job to do. And with OFF, well, I'd be happy just to get airborne again for something more than a quick spin around the aerodrome! But it seems, as you have noted, that you are close to defining an "OFF 3.5", as it were, and that is where I could jump in - a well-defined and manageable group of compatible mods. Now I don't know if it matters as much to us guys flying fabric-covered planes, but a fellow over at sim-outhouse has apparently managed to solve the specular/reflective shine issue with Windows 7. A lot of WWII CFS3'ers have stayed with Windows XP just because of that. I'd post a linky, but it's easy to find, and anyway, if there is interest, it probably needs it's own thread. I'm appreciative and amazed at what you all manage to accomplish - thanks for all you do to make this what it is. It is unquestionably the best group of people I've ever joined up with. Best, Tom -
Thanksgiving Coma? Autumn Avolition? Hibernation?
HumanDrone replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well, for me (as I sit here in a hotel in Kentucky) that's just it - I "hain't" been home! I had to come down here the Thursday night the week before Thanksgiving, then back Friday night (5-1/2 hr drive each way), then the Starurday after Thanksgiving down here again, didn't get home until Wednesday night late, back down here last night and getting ready to go over to the plant now (they keep having delays that prevent me from completing the tests they need). I love the area, but I need to be home. It's nice & rural - for the local newspaper's "Black Friday" story, they showed a picture of the early morning line outside the Tractor Supply Compant store! Next week I spend a week in Orlando, FL (testing in a power plant, not visiting the Mouse House). Somewhere in her we have to finish decorating for Christmas...! I dodged a bullet on a trip to Philadelphia on Tuesday, we were able to send a younger guy... Thanksgiving must've been a little rough, CaptSopwith - school and your personal life. Hope you are doing better. And Olham, I know what you mean - I had to re-learn how to take some very sensitive measurements, and it's like "Did you guys try to maker this more complicated?" But they've come out well so far. I haven't been able to fly for a couple of weeks now, not even a quick spin. So the Capt's plan of spending some alone time patrolling the lines sounds really attractive - an therapeutic for me as well... just to slow down a bit. Best to all, Tom (Glad to see this morning's off-line episode has been resolved!) -
Oops! Did I miss a version? Does my maxim still hold?
-
Isn't the maxim something like "They get every other version right?" So 98, XP and 7 were good, while 2000 and Vista were dogs.... Hasse Wind, I think you're on to something there...
