  1. No OFF for 3 weeks

Well, back to the grindstone. Sorry, no postcards but here's a pic of my families house and the view from the garden. Had lots of wonderful food/wine/food/wine/wine/wine etc .
  2. Lightning Strike!

In the days when I was using a laptop at a table in our hallway, a storm came fast giving no warning 'till CRASH the hallway turned blue and my hair stuck up (and there was a lot of it then). The laptop made a frizzleing sound, the printer went pop and the hall light - which wasn't on - exploded:yikes:. It turned out to be a direct hit on the chimney stack. I was in shock for a while and just sat there. Bad luck CJ but at least you're up and running.
  3. No OFF for 3 weeks

I'll do my best, CJ but because they enjoy better weather than here in the UK they are usually found at the field and not in front of a PC. Just to give 'em a plug, this is their website My link Hasn't been updated for a while by the looks of it. Nice bunch of blokes though.
  4. What are you flying mostly?

    Can't vote - keep getting error messages:unsure:
  5. I've just started researching my grandfather's WW1 service life as very little is know about by the reast of the family. I became interested when it was rumoured that he was in the RFC. I managed to get a photo of him in uniform and it shows that he was in RE as a signalman and gained a "skill-at-arms" award. I also have a copy of his original sign up papers which were dated May 1918 when he was 19 years old and mentioning that he was in previous service of Royal Engineers. Clearly he joined the RE's whilst under age and was discharged. He may also be the person of the same name that I found a medal roll for in 1915 - that would have put him at 16 years old - but this is not proven. It seems that his 1918 application resulted in him serving in the then RAF and he was posted to Iraq where, in 1922, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. About all that is known here is that his plane had a fault and it forced him to land in the middle of the desert and he lived with nomads for 5 days 'till he was rescued. It's all fascinating stuff. Because he served in WW2 as well his records are with the RAF and not archived so a personal application will be made for those. His early (underage) career will likely remain a mystery unless his RE records were moved to the RAF when he joined them.
  6. OT- my grandfather's service

Yep, I agree but I was only young when we used to visit my grandfather - I can remember being about 9 or 10 and going in his shed at the bottom of the garden and watching him make keys and all sorts - and by the time you're old enough to realise, then it's too late. Sounds like I must be a bit older than you guys:yikes: And Mike, yes I do think about that if he'd died in the war then he wouldn't have married and had the eight children who then spawned 15 who then spawned..........etc. It's mind boggling.
  7. OT- my grandfather's service

You're absolutely right. Apparently my grandfather "didn't talk about it", at least not at length anyway and this is part of the trouble I'm having. There are several of his sons and daughters living but this is all news to them as well. In WW2 he was based at an airfield just outside of London working on radios but was sworn to secrecy as to the exact nature of his work. After my holiday I'll visit the archives in Kew and see if there's anything of his RE record there - his RAF one will have to be applied for. Also a lot of WW1 records were lost when the building they were housed in was bombed during WW2 and only about 2/3 were salvageable - his signup papers are burnt around the edges.
  8. Smashing skin - I'm happy as a pig in schitt.
  9. Close encounter of the allied kind.
  10. The title says it all. I've finally created an ace pilot:heat: and he deserves his own skin. I have an rc model I painted in these colours and they are the colours of Capt. D. Grinell-Milne. Does anyone feel like they can help a poor colleague who is hopeless with paint/photoshop stuff. I can only offer the pleasure of seeing it in screen shots in exchange. Oh......and maybe a drink:drinks::drinks::drinks:.
  11. Whoops....had to many drinks already and forgot the scheme. SE5a
  12. Off not properly installed on Windows 7

Glad it helped. It was the way I would've gone about it - install bit by bit and test at each stage to see where it failed. So your problem is partially solved. Hope someone with HITR and win 7 comes along to help you the rest of the way. In the meantime, it's hot so grab yourself a cold beer and relax.
  13. Off not properly installed on Windows 7

I know when I first stared with OFF I used "invincible" and it worked for me OK and my OS is win 7 too. I'm wondering if it may be HITR that's causing it. It's just a thought as I don't have that. It would be interesting to see if the problem exists without HITR installed. P'raps someone else with win 7 can help. I must admit that I found "invincible" a bit of a pain in the a*** and opted for the next level down - you just end up in hospital more but it forces you to learn the evasive skills.
  14. New PC Component suggestions

I've got an ASUS M3A79T Deluxe motherboard with AMD phenom II X" 550 cpu and running win 7 64bit and get a steady 50 - 55 fps and have no stutters. OFF runs great for me. Oh yes and an ATI 4830 card.
  15. Keep the home fires burning.
  16. Camel Caper Over London

Ah, the Red Bull challenge. Nice one.
  17. By Any Other Name?

My current British pilot is an Italian by the name of Pilota di Prova and when I fly for the other side my pilot is Hans Off.
  18. Annoying Issue – No Zoom-In Key

Hi BH. I've got win7 64bit and I've got zoom controls no problem. P'raps your squadron don't have binoculars, apart from that dunno mate. Did the install go without a hitch? no errors messages etc. I could send you my xml file but it's a modified one and not "clean" one.
  19. Good book.

It's my birthday and one of my gifts was a book called "The Diary & Letters of a WW1 Fighter Pilot. by Christopher M Burgess" At first glance it looks great - the pilot in question is Guy Mainwaring of 65 squadron. Maybe you all know about it anyway but it was a great surprise for me.
  20. Good book.

edit: Guy Mainwaring Knocker. Anyway, I thought it was interesting
  21. Welcome, When I started with OFF I tried several planes in Quick Combat and settled for the SE5a. I started a campaign in 56 squadron and, although I've got several pilots going in different squadrons/planes, the SE5a is still my favourite. I guess that will change eventually.
  22. posting pics

How does one post pics that are on Photobucket. I've tried a couple of times but all that happens is the code is posted and no pic. I create the code in photobucket then copy it, and when creating the post I click on "Insert Image" and paste the code in the box. What am I doing wrong?
