  1. Wow, I would have never thought multiplayer wasn't avaialable in a newer version. That wasn't mentioned in MigBuster's thread, but of course that isn't something new, just something that's now missing. Many thanks for the feedback everyone, we'll be going with WoI. :) Just one last question; are there any issues with running WoI on a dual-core system? I.e. do you have to set the WoI executable's affinity to a single core, or anything like that?
  2. My main computer is only connected to a HDTV. That was a problem with F4AF becuse the 2D cockpit would be framed with black vertical bars. The 3D cockpit would fill my screen, but that was a no go on my older style Tube HDTV as I couldn't read the radar and some of the MPD's. FS2004, WoV, WoE and IL2FB are all playable on it, but the icons in the F4 3d cockpit are just too small. Has widescreen support finally been added for the 2d cockpit?
  3. H.A.W.X.

I guess it has to do with what your standards for minimal realism are , to each their own and I'm glad you like HAWX. Other than Blazing Angels 2 I haven't liked any of the 360 flight sim demos enough to purchase the actual game. I really tried to like Ace Combat 6, but there was just too many things with it that made you suspend disbelief. At a bare minimum I personally need a decent cockpit view, otherwise the experience feels very lacking. On the other hand, having toyed around with my 360 controller in a number of PC flight sims, I'm convinced a flightsim with a decent degree of realism is possible on the 360. I think it's going to take someone who's tried and true in flghtsim development to do it though; maybe TK can bring Wings Over to the 360, or hey how about that layed-off Flight Simulator team. I'm not kidding myself that we'll ever see anything as close to real on the 360 as even the Strike Fighters series, but I think we can get something better than what's out now or in the pipeline.
  4. H.A.W.X.

I've burrowed through many of the threads on the H.A.W.X. website and I've played the 360 demo twice now. I never expected the game to be much more than Air Quake, but that said, I still can't fathom why they thought it was a good idea to not allow the cockpit view for the unassisted flight mode. Actually I should correct myself, I read through the developers thread so I know what they thought were logical conclusions that lead to their decision. The problem is that I fundamentaly disagree with their conclusions. As one poster at the H.A.W.X. forum put it; the developer seems to think that a player needs an out-of-body/out-of-cockpit experience in order to employ defensive tactics/maneuvers. So what you get in unassisted flight mode is a very disorienting and hard to control view which they term 'dog fight view.' When you consider that there isn't a single snap view available in the cockpit mode -at least on the 360 - then it kind of makes sense how they could have drawn such an incorrect conclusion. What I found most frustrating is that while reading their speel, I couldn't help but think they might not have made that mistake if they'd ever played the 3rd wire sims through their evolution from SFP1 onward. I remember the challenge of dealing with SAMS and A2A in the early days of SPF1 and WoV and how that was eventually worked around with 3rd party mods to missile trails and the use of external camera positons. I'm sure the same was true for many other PC flight sims. So how the developer could be living in such a vacuum is a bit beyond me? Anyways just my 2 cents and an expression of my dissapointment as I was hoping this might be a good game for my son. I'll just save my money and pass.
  5. LOL I remember Stiglr from years ago when I used to lurk the SIMHQ forums. He was always a great source of entertainment for me For some reason anytime I read anything he's posted I'm immediately reminded of that scene in Sleeper where Woody Allen's character is electronically molested while hiding in an Orgasmatron.
  6. Wait...there's a F-5A wingtip tank mod? Dang, wasn't aware of that. Are they at all like the tear shaped tanks that were used on the CF-5A?
  7. Inspiration

Without a doubt the best military aviation book I've ever read. That book really made me appreciate the Thud and the men who flew it. I've since recommended it to a number of friends and aviation fans who've all praised it highly.
  8. Inspiration

I just have to fire up Flight of the Intruder or We Were Soldiers and within a few hours I'll be in WoV flying CAS in a Skyraider or Ironhand in an Intruder.
  9. First off, if anyone can point me to a site where there's very detailed information on the usage of KMD, please provide me the link and disregard the rest of this. I did download the tutorial and went through it step -by- step while building my 1st mission. What I noticed right away is that if I selected the 'Player' checkbox for Flight001 it would uncheck the 'Take off' checkbox after I clicked the [Apply] or [save all] buttons. This of course had the result that once the mission was loaded and flown I immediately crashed on the runway at the start. I did find the Start on Ground setting in the mission file and was able to resolve this, but is this a known bug in KMD? Something else that isn't really clear in the tutorial is whether I can have a wingman by setting the player Flight001 to a size of 2, or do I need to create a Flight002 with a size of 1. The biggest problem I'm having now is that my 2nd flight which is Flight002 won't show up on the runway at the start or at anytime during the mission. I've checked the start time for the Flight001 and Flight002 in the actual mission file and have confirmed that they're both the same. If anyone can give some suggestions as to why this is occurring Id greatly appreciate it.
  10. Didn't see you reply earlier in this thread. KMD 1.7 can be downloaded here at Combatace: KMD 1.7
  11. 1. CF-5A Freedom Fighter 2. Douglas Skyraider 3. A-6A Intruder 4. F-101 Voodoo 5. CF-104 Starfighter I like the 60-70's era most and I like to fly what Canada flew. But there's no arguing with the thrill of moving mud in an Intruder or Skyraider.
  12. I think I checked out their widescreen cockpits in the past and they wouldn't work due to my non-standard setup. As I mentioned before my HDTV is an older variety and it doesn't support native PC resolutions or have a DVI or VGA input. That means I have to connect through DVI-HDMI conversion and run an under scan compensated 720p resolution of 1136x664. It works fine in FS2004, WoV and WoE since they support any resolution your PC can be configured for and IL2FB can do the same through INI edits.
  13. I wasn't aware it existed either. Will the target pack work with WoE and WoV too?
  14. I'll add the 3rd ditto to your comments; well said.
  15. I downloaded the new Voodoo on the weekend and have been really liking it; excellent modeling job. I'm wondering if anyone might be making a Canadian Air Force skin for it similar to the excellent CAF skins we currently have for the CF-104 and CF-5A?
  16. Awesome, glad there's people willing to help us Canucks out. I'm really looking forward to a CDN Voodoo whoever ends up makeing it. Love the new word too. I want to use it in the slogan for my virtual Canuck squadron...Canadize or die!
  17. OK, good to know. Any idea what it's ETA is and will it be available for download from CA? Not that I'm impatient or anything.
  18. My 12 year old son got a glimpse of me playing WoE the other day so I gave him some stick time. Now he wants fly some co-op missions with me. He's been flying the CF-18 in FS2004 so I think he's ready to give a military flight sim a try. The problem is that my 2nd PC would be classified as a low end system; here's the spec's. AMD Athalon 1800 1 MB SDRAM GeForce FX 5700 SB Live 5.1 60 GB ATA 100 HD This is above the minimum specs stated in the readme, but based on the fact that I can't fly WoV or WoE with everything set high on my mid-range system, I'm a bit skeptical. Ideally I'd like us to play WoE with a build that includes Brain32's enhanced Germany terrain, trees and farms update and the runways update. I would crank the resolution down to 800x600 if it's doable. I do still have a plain vanilla install with only the Sept 08 patch on my main computer, so if necessary I could go with that. Has anyone here tried a Sept 2008 patched WoE on a system like this and if so could you give me some feedback? I'd ask the same question about WoV, but my son couldn't really care less about aircaft from that era and only wants to fly the newer, flashier F-15A and CF-18...kids.
  19. Hmm...well that brings up the additional question; do our screen resolutions both have to be at the same setting -i.e. 800x600- to play co-op? I don't have a problem ommitting the 3rd party enhancements if necessary, I just wouldn't be willing to omitt the Sept 2008 patch.
  20. Wait...I think I know what's going on there! Was there a sexy female F-15A anywhere near that airfield!?
  21. Avro CF-105 Arrow and the CF-101 Voodoo.
  22. KMD is good enough for me and I'll be sticking with it for now. I've resolved most of my issues thanks to the excellent feedback here. The only problem I'm having now is that the 4 wingmen in my flight and I are being assigned taxi positions on the opposite end of the runway. My mission is at Hue airbase which has a runway that's oriented on 0 and 180 deg's. Originally when I was a single flight I could take off with a north heading. Now my wingmen and I are being placed on the north end of the runway and being lined up for a 180 deg. takeoff. Is this normal, i.e. is there only 1 direction in which a multiple aircraft flight can take off from? Or is this possibly occurring because I have enabled the 'Adjust start heading' checkbox?
  23. I run WoV and WoE on a low - mid range spec'd PC. AMD X64 3200+ 1 GB DDR2 RAM Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS Sound Blaster Audigy II I run all graphic settings on medium with the exception of cockpits, objects, object details, water and ground objects which are high. I have cockpit reflections off, mirrors on and shadows at normal. I get anywhere from 19 - 38 fps depending upon the terrain. Occasionally while flying around Thud ridge and Hanoi I get momentary drops -up to 5 seconds- where fps are 10. I've found the single biggest robber of frame rates is the horizon setting which when set to 'Far' costs me at least 5 fps if not more. My sound settings are on 32 channels. I have the enhanced VietnamSEA terrain, enhanced runways and currently Green Hell - LOW, but I'm considering bumping up to MED. For WoE, I have Brain32's enhanced German terrain, enhanced runways and the trees and farms enhancements. I get much better frame rates in WoE, but I've put that down to mostly flying in non-mountainous areas which aren't too common in WoV. I'd love for there to be a tweak guide for this sim as it took me quite a bit of tinkering after the Sept 08 patch to arrive at a decent frame rate.
