I've just finished "Thud Ridge" for a second time so I think I'll give this one a try. Sounds like a different type of book, and should be interesting.

I think it's a side scan radar for id'ing ground targets. -
Fancy aircraft
tank03 replied to Sgt.KAR98's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'd have to agree. Right now I'm on a big WW2 kick so I've been spending time building up a flock of old warbirds. I'd love to see some more RAF bombers (Wellington, Lincoln, Whitley, etc) released. -
Float planes viable in SFP1?
tank03 replied to tank03's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I stand corrected, thanks for pointing that out. Unfortunately, I don't have the know-how to model a flying boat, but your suggestion is intriguing. Here's to hoping someone with talent takes up the task and delivers us a Sunderland. -
I always got the impression that the kind of people who willingly get naked in public are exactly the people you DON'T want to see naked.

Float planes viable in SFP1?
tank03 replied to tank03's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I was planning a custom mission (providing cover whilst a Sunderland recovered a downed pilot in the Channel) and the floatplane really would have been nothing more than eye candy. I know next to nothing about how the terrains work so I wasn't sure what their capabilities are. Thanks for the info. -
SFP1 and weapons
tank03 replied to gumpy's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
There is a discrepency between the weapons pack and the soviet aircraft. One uses NATO weapon designations, the other uses soviet designations. You will have to go into each of the soviet A/C files and open the loadout ini. and then edit the entries, as well as the attachment type in the data.ini. This thread from the knowledge base explains it all and lists all the necessary changes: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=18346 -
Bombsight
tank03 replied to gumpy's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm not entirely sure, but I was believe the bombsight is a seperate mod that has to be installed in addition to the a/c. -

The extract utility is useful, but it usually isn't necessary when just adding aircraft.

What was you fav off the wall Sci-Fi movie
tank03 replied to Redddevil911's topic in Sci-Fi Simulations
Clockwork Orange still creeps me out. I've seen the movie several times, but I can't say I've ever been entertained by it; it's just too distubing. And like you say, what is left unsaid/unseen is more disturbing than the obvious. -
Somehow I don't think Hank would appreciate propane humor.

I agree whole heartedly. WHen I was younger the end of my workday meant that I was now going out with the guys, or trolling for girls. Now that I'm settled down and married, most of my socializing takes place on the weekends as a couple. With stuff to do around the house and time to spend with family my free time is at a premium. By ducking into the study I can get a quick mission, check out a forum, or fiddle with some add-ons without having to either leave the house or spend any money.

Yes, you do need to open the folders and cut/paste the files into the appropriate game folders (i.e. put the actual sound file, not the folder into the games sound folder; same with the missions) The weapons file needs to go into the weapons folder, not the aircraft folder, and the weaponsdata ini needs to be edited to include the new weapon. Here is a link to a knowledge base article that explains how to correctly add weapons: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=9323

Bombers VS Fighters
tank03 replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The few times I've taken the Thud against a MiG I've always come up short. I try to avoid those types of encounters by relying on that kick ass engine to get me the hell out of there ASAP. I've just read Broughton's book for the first time and was thoroughly impressed; moving and informative. -
I'm quite hesitant to get involved in this heated debate as I really don't care all that much. I've been following it for it's entertainment value but a thought just occured to me that I felt you may enjoy considering on a philosphical level. As an outsider looking in I was piqued by your use of the term "community"; in that it seems that you recognise a single community that is currently fragmented. I would postulate that there isn't one fragmented community, but rather two seperate communities. And it would seem that these seperate entities will always be seperate; oil and water if you will. No amount of rational debate or argument could possible serve to join that which is incapable of being joined. And that's OK! Division is inherent in any human gathering (even digital). But it does reinforce the sense that the horse is well and truly beaten, and further efforts will be for naught. It's not a matter of, "...[it's] far easier to just move on, because "we have beat this subject to death" ?", but move on because no change is going to take place. Maybe my outlook is a bit too zen, but I'm happy for what I have, rather than unhappy for what I don't have. P.S. I think TK is wise to stay the hell out of it. He's got enough to be going on with.

Bombers VS Fighters
tank03 replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
MiG: as in MiG17, MiG21, etc and CAP as in Combat Air Patrol The F-105 was never designed, nor meant, to be an air superiority fighter. It's not very manuverable and was designed for speed to deliver nukes to the soviets. During the early years of Vietnam, it was put into use as a dive bomber becuase the US had nothing else that fit the role until the F-4 came along. -
Bombers VS Fighters
tank03 replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm guessing the reason sims generally reflect fighter aircraft is because it's instantly exciting and engaging. You get to play the prey vs. predator game and usually get instant gratification when you shoot down your enemy. By comparison, a bombing run (though no less difficult or important) doesn't TYPICALLY offer the same sense of instant satisfaction or rush when you put the bombs on the target. Now, I've qualified this with "typically", because in WOV (especially with the YAP missions) I've struck targets and come out of it with the same sweaty hands and heavy breathing as a successful A2A mission. The intensity of the ground fire and the nearly overwhelming amount of "stuff" going on, all while trying to hit the target and get out alive is exceptionally enthralling. Of course a dive bombing run (which is really what the Thud did) is much more intense (I would imagine) than dropping a load from 30,000' in a Buff. I do think though, that comparing fighters to bombers is a bit of apples and oranges as they have very different objectives. Though, each is somewhat dependent on the other for overall success of a given conflict, and each is, at one time or another, indispensable. -

I believe you can adjust the tracer loading by using the gun editor that comes with Bunyaps weapon pack. I think you would need to edit each gun type seperatlely. Perhaps you could make every other round a tracer or some such thing.

"The Day The Earth Stood Still" Forgot about that one. It was great, even if a little outdated. -
I agree, I have a UV filter on my rig nearly every shot, and the polarizer can do wonders.

These are great! You're really using the whole field of view to fill the picture. As a result there is a lot less clutter in the background and the planes stand out much, much better. The first really pops out because the trees are perfectly placed behind the plane and make it really stand out and the perspective is great. That nose shot is fantastic! It might be my favorite of the bunch- no background clutter, zeroed in one one element, and an interesting angle, and the color is not washed out despite a bright sun. Everything that makes a pic a keeper! The third is good, but I think moving in a bit more would add emphasis to the A-10 by filling up more of the frame with the subject. Good color sauturation though; especially in such bright light.

I think they're great. My first thought was- that lucky bastard! I don't think I could ever get that close to the real birds without getting arrested (or shot). In the first shot I think a tweak of the aperture (or setting the camera to Portrait) will obscure the C-130? and really show of the plane a bit more. The second shot is truly great. The pattern of the multiple plane tails adds real interest and the generator cart kind of cements the foreground. By working this angle (the pattern of tails and the cart) by trying some different perspectives of these elements I think you could easily get a magazine worthy photo. The third shot (Dagger/Dart?) is great. You really got a good angel and really filled the picture with the plan. Excellent!
