I recently downloaded Air Navy Fighters for my iPad. It's surprisingly a great flight sim-ish game. The graphics are not quite as impressive as the Sky Gamblers series but it has a more authentic sim feel. It features realistic carrier landings, simple avionics (including an RWR and HSD) and even a scenario editor where you can actually build your own terrain and missions. The whole thing has a late 90's Falcon 4ish feel which I find pretty cool. Links to the free lite versions, give it a download: iOS https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-navy-fighters-lite/id563259898?mt=8 Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.rortos.airnavyfighterslite (And no, I am not a spambot )

OK so I was driving down the Meritt Parkway in Connecticut and got stuck in traffic on the bridge next to the Sikorsky factory, so I took out the telephoto lens to see what I could see. There wasn't much activity, but one helo was outside being worked on. It looked like some kind of test rig - to my eyes, it looks like a funky kind of blackhawk, but I don't know. It has sponson tanks like a pave low and lacks a door gunner window. It has presidential looking paint like a VH-60 (Marine One, green with white stripe), perhaps that's what it is? I.E. a VIP modifed blackhawk? Which would explain the fuel tanks (extra range) and lack of door gunner (don't want to scare people by flying over homes with a a M134 minigun). Ideas? PS: sorry about the black poles - the place is fenced in and I was outside said fence (obviously).

Fuel air explosive effect?
LightningIII replied to WhiteBoySamurai's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
IIRC, the Desert Storm mod had one, but it sort of sucked because: A. basically the air filled with clouds in a small area and then the clouds faded. No big bang. B. It had no effect against tanks I would love to see a new really cool effect (and some weapon tweaks), but I really have never tried effects modding myself and don't have much (read: any) time now that school has started. -
How does SF treat stealth?
LightningIII posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
It really irritates me getting detected (sometimes shot at) at long range in a F-22 or F-117. Does the game have a good approximation of stealth i.e. can you, through good planning and tactics, be practically invincible in the F-117? Also, when I am flying in the F-22 going against some modern fighters, I find it hard to lock on sometimes. Is this a bug in the F-22 or is this the result of stealth features or ECM of the aircraft I am targeting? Lastly, is the effect of external stores decreasing stealth modeled? I.E. will flying with wing bombs or missiles on an F-22 or F-35 make the aircraft much easier to detect and kill? Thanks -
How does SF treat stealth?
LightningIII replied to LightningIII's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
By "lock" I mean that when I put the radar cursor over the target, no matter how many times I mash the "lock radar target" button on my stick it doesn't lock. Sometimes, however, when I have it designated in TWS the radar will lock on by itself without my input. Is that what's supposed to happen with TWS? Not to be noobish, but I am more used to the traditional search mode than TWS, so maybe I am doing something wrong. To be clear, I am not "losing" lock or track, I just cant get it to lock on to a target which is designated. Also, this only happens in the F-22. I have no problem in any other aircraft. -

Ok, but that still does not explain the F-22 obnoxious refusal to lock on. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the F-22 only has a TWS radar mode in the game (no standard search and track modes when I looked in the INI)??? -
Yep definitely the S-92, not the new executive helicoper. Pic from Wikipedia: Yup. Definitely.

Cool - I had never even heard of that! But that still doesn't explain the paint scheme.

Editing Cockpits
LightningIII posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I've been working on messing around with F-22 and F-35 cockpits and I'm a little perplexed by the cockpit file. How does one add instruments to a cockpit? For example, on the F-35 pit, I want to add a compass/steer point indicatior over the moving map display. I was hoping that I would find xyz coordinates or something in the cockpit ini but I can't figure it out. Any help appreciated. -
What format do sound files need to be in?
LightningIII posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I am working on a windloop.wav. For whatever reason, when I put a wav file to replace the windloop, it just plays the default noise. I am putting the file in the sounds folder and the bit rate is 176 kbps. Is there some other caveat I am missing? Thanks, Eagle -
What format do sound files need to be in?
LightningIII replied to LightningIII's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Well my problem was that I was working in a modded install where the jets I was flying were calling for "RADIOLOOP" rather than "windloop". I do now have (with that all sorted out) a complete Novalogic F-22 music mod which I can package up and release if anybody is interested. The wind loop is a section of mission music from the game, it's a pretty cool background for downing migs but I don't like how it stops every time I exit the cockpit and go to another view. Anybody have a workaround? Is there a way to add it as some kind of ambiant sound for the plane? -
Editing Cockpits
LightningIII replied to LightningIII's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I don't want to change things in the model, just change how some of the displays work. The F-35 cockpit is just one big touchscreen so it has a lot of flat open space. I was hoping to be able to do things sort of like what you can do with a HUD in the avionics ini - just add in the right textures and code etc. -
Any Command and Conquer fans?
LightningIII posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
I always thought that this sim would be perfect for some C&C "near future" style scifi action. We pretty much already have all the aircraft and ground vehicles nessicary for a Tiberium Dawn or Red Alert 1 flight "sim" - we just need to do some skins, mabye make some command and conquer style buildings. Heck, all of the battles in those games take place in real world locations that we already have terrains for. I cant make models but I might try to do some modding/skinning work. Just bouncing some ideas around. Anybody interested let me know. I've also had ideas for a Half-Life or Halo style battle with alien aircraft vs US fighters, but that might be harder to pull off. -
Fictitious/Experimental Modern "Red Side" Aircraft
LightningIII posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
Hi all I am working on an SF2 mod which will feature such "fictitious" aircraft as the F-19 "Flying Frisbee", F-24 "AFX", F-23 "Black Widow II" and I am looking for some good 'Red Side' i.e. Russian, Soviet, Chinese aircraft which were/are prototypes and can face of against the likes of the AFX without getting blasted out of the sky without contest. Things like the Su-47 would be great. Any recommendations would be appreciated P.S. I have been attempting to create menu screens as well and I am sort of epicly failing :helpme: If somebody is good with menus and would like to help out, please let me know. -
