In preparation for the upcoming SF2:NA (Red Storm Rising) - After garbled reports of a small detachment of Soviet troops making a landing in Iceland I was quickly scrambled to investigate. Imagine my surprise when I found a Soviet Spy Trawler who locked me up on radar, a capability unknown so far. It was to be his last mistake as my Wingmans Sea Eagle eliminated the threat. After the Trawler encounter we cautiously headed inland across the desolate terrain where we stumbled across a temporary landing strip under construction by more of those pesky Soviets. I hit their engineering vehicles which should slow them down enough until we can order up a full strike. Meanwhile my Wingman reported back to NATO HQ that it looks like the threat is real and those sneaky Soviets got the jump on us this time! 12SQN GR1 Skin from the Tornado Pack recoloured. ------------------------------------------------ -
Request - ASRAAM Skin
ianh755 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
***EDIT*** - Ravenclaw007 was already working on this, his amazing WIP pics are here - http://combatace.com/topic/69760-request-asraam-skin/page__view__findpost__p__544667 Hi all, me again with another cheeky request. With the new Typhoon BETA to play with I noticed that the current ASRAAM skin is, to be blunt, terrible while the model isn't that bad it is very bland anyway (not even a Glass nose). I've a go myself but I'll be honest, it looks like a child's done it, badly, but my excuse is the skin is a square only 128x128 (when it should be 1024x128 - long and thin like the missile) so everything has to be stretched really wide to look right when it's on the model. Here's the original My poor effort done in paint just to put some deatils on it Here's a very good website with a close up http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-aim-132-asraam-missile/419669 and here's some reference pics The models from the MGunny pack but it's here incase you haven't got it. Did some reskins for the Operational Brimstone mW (AGM-114L model) and DMS Brimstone (AGM-114F model) which are now grey not cream/brown and I found a better Storm Shadow model (under APACHEM in MGunnys pack, model's called SCALP) so did that in a Storm Shadow skin. All done in paint and the Brimstone models could do with rounding (original skin was black which hid a lot). -
I treat them a bit like Dumb bombs when it comes to dropping them. My method is level at 25,000ft 550kts and then a shallow 25' dive to a release at around 20,000ft followed by minimal roll, zero if possible (thats the bit that throws the Designator pod). Depending on the the accuracy of the bombs FM a PaveWay 2 series should have about 1/2-2/3's the range of a PaveWay 3 series (PW2 for me is about 8 miles at 20,000ft). With Weapons on "Easy" you can lob a PW2 30+miles if you get high enough!

Here you go - Happy New Year BTW dude! Ravenclaw - Hit the jackpot! Went around the camp taking piccys of the different stuff we've got and got you this - 27 high Rez pics (3648x2736) of an Enhanced Paveway 3, 16 of a TV Guided Martel AJ-168, 16 of a Sea Eagle and 23 of a WE-177 (Storm Shadow display model removed due to high winds here, AIM-9L we've already got so I didn't bother). They're all shrunk down to 1024x768 in this 11Mb zip file (full size is 300Mb!) so let me know which ones you want as full size and I'll upload them for you. http://ianhenshall.com/sf2/weaponspicstiny.rar Here's the measurement pic for the extra section - ***EDIT*** it's 5.5in or 14cm from the otherside of the silver band. -
No hits with Exocet in Falklands
ianh755 replied to harryleith's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
It's the entry - "GuidanceType=7" which is for Inertial Nav guidance. It's a game limitation that ASM's don't use radar (Air to Air only) so using this guidance type was the work around. However with this it'll only hit static objects unfortunately as it will only head to the co-ordinates of where the target was at when you fired it. Here are two fixes depending on your comfort level with editing - a. Easiest - Change the guidance type to either 5 or 6 (TV or IIR guidance). It'll now hit moving targets (ships!)as is Fire & Forget but it'll display a TV/IIR window in the top right of your display. No other .ini changes are required. b. Medium - Change the guidance type to 3. This is Command guided and acts the same as above but doesn't display the TV/IIR window which looks much better. HOWEVER, the missile then becomes a CGR which means the pylon data in all your Exocet firing Aircraft's data.ini will need to be altered to include CGR in the attachment type. It's maybe something that could be addressed in a patch for the Falklands mod? Hope that helps! -

Edit to the above - Now I know the model dimensions are right I can tell you that the missile body stays the same diameter from the exhaust for 2613mm then the nose starts to thin down for the last 337mm until the very tip of the glass at 2950. It doesn't thin down from the Vertical line I mentioned earlier, got my lines mixed up! BTW my measurements only have an error factor of around 0.2% so everything should be spot on! Here's a rough idea of the curve involved in the thinning - The Green line is from the exhaust and is straight. The Red line is the seeker assy and is also straight. The Blue line is the only curved bit. The Yellow line is 131mm from the start of the glass to the end of the seeker. The Purple line is the length of the curved section at 169mm from the seeker to the main body. The Glass dome is 37mm. The lines aren't accurate they're just to show what bits I'm on about. -

It's very slightly less than half - if the model is correct at 166mm diameter (the figures I'm using for measurement are the per real ASRAAM ones) then the nose (start of the glass) is 72-73mm diameter as near as I can make it and it from the Vertical line by the 2 laser windows (which is where it starts to narrow on the model) to the start of the glass it's 407-408mm (444mm to the tip of the glass). Hope that helps! -

ianh755 replied to ianh755's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
The only thing needs tweaking with the existing model is the nose section. It needs to narrow more (too "fat" before the green section needs to be 1/2 the diameter of the missile body) and get a glass nose. Is it difficult to make different Skin template for an existing model (so it inc's exhaust/nose, missile body skin is rectangular etc)? -

ianh755 replied to ianh755's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
OK here it is warts and all, but it really needs someone with any kind of skinning abilities to have a go, please because when you can see the whole skin it's looks pretty shocking TBH. Anyway I tweaked it slightly from the one above, I changed the skin tone from grey to white and removed the blue band and did red/yellow for war shots based on the reference picks. It's still a basic flat skin done in paint with huge pixels distorting everything (see the 2 black laser windows and attempted writing for example) and you can see where I've flipped the left side to right and the weathering doesn't match. I've gone overboard on the weathering TBH but couldn't see it when it was lighter. The model LOD calls for for a .bmp image so you can either D/L this 3Mb file here - http://www.ianhenshall.com/sf2/ASRAAM.bmp or you can take this 160kb JPEG and convert it to a BMP in Paint, your choice but the qualities the same either way as at some point I'd saved it as a JPEG and reconverted it back to a BMP anyway making the quality poorer! -

That "extra fatter bit" on the rear of the warhead - forward of the teeth is about 6in (15cm) longer I think and around 4in (12cm) to the radius. It's there to allow us to fit our UK fuse which is bigger than the US ones and has more bits (technical term ) inside for anti-tamper etc! I'll try and get a better measurement of it if possible tomorrow (maybe too high off the ground). -

LMAO, I haven't seen that in a while! In the RAF the Armourers are generally known for being knuckle-dragging low-brow simpletons (and about 80% of the time thats right!) so while it's probably not on every bomb as an official marking (DRILL would be though) it wouldn't surprise me if an Armourer in a bomb dump had scribbled this on the tail units he was working on just to let the guys building the whole package know that it was definitely the Enhanced Tail Unit (we'll probably still have non-enhanced ones store somewhere too). ***EDIT*** Sorry Ravenclaw, I reread your post and I now understand you're asking about the Fusing rather than the wording (Doh!). Yes that is a British Fuse and should only be on UK bombs. The airflow over the fins spins the blades which arms the fuse and you can see the safety wire which attaches to the pylon and stops the vanes/fins turning while it's on the A/C and snaps when the bomb is released. It used to be an Armourer "thing" to collect these (and cannon shells) as trophies proving that the bomb they had loaded/worked on had been dropped on something. I'll pop around to 12SQN tomorrow and take a bunch of pics of their standard PW3 they have on display (we've got a Sea Eagle, WE177 and Storm Shadow on 617). PS I found some up close pics of the nose of the Enhanced Paveway 2 as well (you may already have the bottom two) - -

Eric - The only thing I know about modelling is that it takes plenty of time and effort (2 Weeks ) so while it'd be great if a new model was made (and I would be ecstatic) as the 3D modelling guys are almost always overworked with plenty of bigger projects I didn't want to add any extra work-load to anyone for something that really only effects 3 RAF planes (Tornado/Typhoon/JSF) and 1 RAAF (F/A-18) and isn't that big in the scale of things. However, as I know nothing about the actual Modelling/Skinning process I thought making a new skin template for an existing model would be much quicker/easier which is why I thought that a tweaked skin would tide me over until the model could be redone. PS Added a new reference image above of the right side. -

An update to this post, I've found a pic of a complete UK Enhanced PW3 and it looks like the GPS AE is brown and only slightly raised, not like the EnPW2 or the PW4/GBU-49 types. If anyone can find a better pic it'd be helpful. -

Here's the AMRAAM C4 Model Eric mentioned - It's in SF1 format so needs an edit for it show in SF2 properly (about 1 min to do) but you could just take the LOD/Skin and paste them into whatever AMRAAM C/D models you have (A/B were different) and edit the model name in the data.ini. http://combatace.com/files/file/5562-high-detailed-aim-120c-amraam-updated/ -
Bomb Drop Sound Mod ?
ianh755 replied to endemoniada's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Bugger, I was hoping to attached a Jet noise to the RAF Storm Shadow for the duration of it's flight. It works for the 1sec as it drops (as a booster effect) but nothing for either Sustainer or InFlight effect as it flys away from the pilots "ears". It's a shame that the GroundObjects sound can't be used (they make noise in External Target view) which would have been great, ah well -

Yes but thats cheating! The awesome GBU-27 model Revenclaw did can be a substitute for the GBU-24A/B (USAF) and GBU-24B/B (USN) or UK Paveway III (GBU-24(V)2/B - 4/B - 8B) but the fins are slightly different although TBH how many people will notice when they'll be to busy admiring the the bomb in the 1st place! -

Taking the new BETA Typhoon out for a test of some redone weapons skins over the North Sea ranges when we and my wingman got an emergency QRA call to a Rogue Backfire over Northern Scotland heading for RAF Leuchars which needed to be stopped! ps Stary's ejection seat mod looked amazing during the gun-run which downed the Backfire. After downing the Backfire we headed out over the beach at St Andrews and made the golfer's sooo angry they all started hitting glowing red balls at me! -
With it being a Triplex system the "voter" circuity should have seen two very similar sets of data and one Wildly off set and voted to disregard the dodgy set so for it not to have done that is a huge worry for the makers (and the pilots at the time!) as it essentially makes it a single mean point of failure. A good 75-80% of our aircrew's "snags" are down to a computer of some sort going wibble (either from heat, program corruption etc) which is solved by removing power and switching it back on again after a minute or two. Unfortunately while flying our A/C is designed with a "keep alive in OFF" mode where switching the unit OFF just puts it into standby rather than removing voltage (incase the aircrew accidentally switch something off they can switch it back on quickly without a warm up phase). This means we can't get the aircrew to just switch it off in flight as it needs power either removing from the jet (Generators off) or the CB pulling, neither of which could be done in the air. Another great feature from the guys & gals at BAE.
