Realistic RWR sound ?
Siddley posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I know it's a bit cheeky, but could anyone make some realistic RWR tones for the 60's aircraft ? I'd have a go myself but I'm clueless with that kind of thing. Craig Bakers Thud site has some 105 cockpit audio from a Weasel mission - if you follow the link and then click on file #22 then you'll hear what I mean. -
Realistic RWR sound ?

Cheers for that -
I just bought SF2 Vietnam. Not had much time to evaluate it, but my first impression is that the cockpits look pretty good. The purchasing process was quick and painless too. While I know I should read the Knowledge Base ( and I am doing ) is there anything I should immediately be aware of moving from the 1st to 2nd Gen ? What would be your 'Top Tips' for a noob to SF2 ? I'm already OK with the mod folder ( I think.......I'm just installing the Vietnam Gold upgrade, which is absolutely amazing in WoV)

New to SF2
Siddley replied to Siddley's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Thanks I haven't been around the forum long, a month maybe ? but I've been a big fan of the Thirdwire sims for years. I'm starting to get SF2 figured out now. Initially the mod folder seemed like a nuisance, but actually it makes sense. My WoE\WoV installs are a real mess and I long ago lost the original discs - thankfully they keep on working somehow..... -
Realistic RWR sound ?

That's one hell of a signature My favourite mission too.... I didn't know that the RWR's identified emitters with different tones according to frequency ( I'd assumed that was done with lights for some reason ) , but then I can't find much detailed information. It's a subject I'm VERY interested in, if you have links to anything on the web I'd love to know more. I collect flight manuals ( in pdf form, I can't afford the real thing ) and it seems like the standard practice after the late 50's was to have a manual for the aircraft and a seperate classified supplement to the manual describing the offensive and defensive systems. I haven't been able to find a single one of those, even though the aircraft I'm interested in have been obsolete for at least 30 years..... Anyway, I don't think a 'generic' rattlesnake sound would hurt though. Like I say, I'd have a go at it myself, but audio isn't my thing. -
Tunes in the pit
Siddley replied to dsawan's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Currently the only way I have to play music is on the same PC which is running the sim, so I don't. It's not the newest or fastest computer in the world and anything which might hit the frame rate gets shut down. Actually I suppose I could play music on my mobile phone ( which is apparently also an MP3 player ) but I don't know how the hell that function works. If something hasn't got wings, or wheels, or a trigger, or is a machine tool then I'm not very interested in learning how it operates.....I can't even send a text message If I DID play music then one choice would probably be the Steve Earle album " Shut Up And Die Like An Aviator " - appropriate to drown out that annoying guy who keeps screaming " Get him off me !!!!! I can't shake him !!!!! " -
I would love to read your paper on the Korean war USMC night fighters....

Lightning Speed
Siddley replied to Mig_eater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I hadn't heard that, but nothing would surprise me much about the Lightning When I was a little kid I used to constantly beg my dad to drive me the 50 miles to RAF Coningsby so I could watch them take off ( climbing out at about 60 degrees in full reheat ) and land. Once I even got a tour of the base thanks to an RAF officer who noticed me standing there at the perimeter fence like the little military aircraft geek that I was. I didn't give two hoots about the Phantoms which also operated from there at the time, I just loved the Lightning. It's probably a good thing that I didn't realise that the Lightning's low fuel warning light came on as it was taxying out to the runway, that it only had two rear aspect heat seekers which were unproved in combat and it required more maintenance than the race tuned 1950's Triton motorcycle I would own 20 years later If so then I would have doubted our ability to prevail in the Cold War -
Lightning Speed
Siddley replied to Mig_eater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I think the fastest speed recorded in the Lightning was when the Saudi's sent a ( possibly crazy ) test pilot to the UK, in order to check out that the aircraft really was all that BAC claimed it to be, before placing an order for the export model. Despite being briefed on the notional Vmax he accelerated away from his British chase pilot ( also in a Lightning ) who was doing something like M2.2 at 60,000 feet. His comments afterwards were " You British are really honest, your Lightning is even faster than you say it is " -
Genius I hope he's jamming now with some of the other blues greats who went before him.....and Phil Lynott too of course.... RIP Gary

OK, I deleted my last post

Don't forget the three 'S' rule then

The most important thing you need to know about the UK is that we are ( mostly ) disarmed. Generations of British subjects have meekly traded their liberty for an illusion of security, to the point where even a pointy stick is considered an 'Offensive weapon' I'd much rather live in America - I am a skilled gunsmith, licenced firearms manufacturer and machinist and will work for food if anyone can get me a Green Card then I'd appreciate it. Or should I just cross over the border from Mexico and get myself an amnesty ? I can't claim to be Mexican but I like the food, I do tend to be lazy, I go really brown in the sun, I speak Spanish and Danny Trejo is one of my favourite actors

Good luck to you Aaron -
That is simply beautiful. Formidable but beautiful.

I have searched the knowledge base ( probably using the wrong terms ) but I can't seem to find out how you get rid of the open canopy on some aircraft. I have this problem with the A-5 in the WoV expansion pack and my wingmen are complaining about the draught :-)

Aim-7 Sparrow in WOV
Siddley replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks for that. I'd seen the assignment but the description didn't really make any sense to me. I almost always fire Sparrows head on with the radar in boresight so that will save some frantic messing around at high closing speeds while getting an ID using the visual targeting box ( I do always ID the target - what I wrote in the previous post wasn't what I really meant - I just don't ID using my own MK1 eyeballs. The limitations of computer graphics are my excuse on that score ) -
Aim-7 Sparrow in WOV
Siddley replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I get a reasonable PK with Sparrows, but I don't employ them realistically - the setting is 'Hard' , but I pass up shots which a real pilot would no doubt have taken. I'll only launch if everything is in the missiles favour. I also pretend I have Combat Tree installed and don't need a visual ID before firing. Thinking about it, I'm not actually sure that I can say I get a reasonable PK - if the missile never leaves the rail because I don't trust it to track then that's as good as a miss. -
No, I haven't, but funnily enough after flying those horrible little Cessna's ( at £80 an hour ) the concept really started to appeal to me. You are always meant to be worrying about what to do if the engine stops, so why not get rid of the engine completely, accept the fact there isn't any power and have fun instead ? :)
-
I stopped flying in the real world because it's just not like that at all. Unless you have a huge disposable income ( or the right stuff to join the military as a pilot, which I didn't ) then you'll be trundling about at 100kts in some crappy old Cessna or Traumahawk which is like the very worst car you ever owned, except with wings. It's boring, regulated the hell out of and really expensive. I spent an enormous amount of money finding that out. Considering the adrenaline to cost ratio a fast motorcycle is a much better solution if you REALLY want to hang your arse out over the edge of eternity :)

Just a word of thanks
Siddley replied to ErwinJ's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Brilliant isn't it ? I had WOE\WOV kind of sitting on my hard drive for ages. Unloved and unpatched until very recently. Get WOV and install the expansion pack available here, that is another awesome combination. -
The Thirdwire site says WOI won't run on Vista. What I need to know is if it REALLY won't run on Vista because I haven't had any problems at all with WOE\WOV even before I patched them to 2008. ( I have 32 bit Vista, if that's an issue )

WOI on Vista
Siddley replied to Siddley's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks FC I was a bit suprised to read that WO* weren't Vista compatible as they have been probably the most stable flight sim programs I have ever used. Now all I have to do is wait for my missis to get home and persuade her to use her Paypal account -
The Double D's
Siddley replied to hgbn's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Real life has gotten in the way of Percy's adventures, but on finally returning to duty for his second mission he was shot down by triple A. No chutes I'm afraid ( maybe I should get around to mapping " Eject " to a key combination, that could help survivability ) I'm going to do some more practise before trying again. I need some better ways to deal with the triple A. Shooting it out toe to toe with them just isn't working in my favour. I'm also thinking about switching to a Sandy. Much easier to handle for the CAS mission when the cloudbase is low.
