  1. TU-95 Bear Intercept

Goose AB was used as a forward operating base by CAF and ADC interceptors from 1968. Here is a little historical blurb (hope it is not too boring): Per NORAD directive dated 05 March 1968: Due to increasing Soviet air activity off the Labrador Coast, the 416th AW(F) Squadron at CFB Chatham will establish an alert detachment at Goose AB with two CF-101B aircraft on armed 5-minute alert. On 01 October 1968 ADC drew up an operationas plan known as College Shaft, which charged the closest ADC F-106 squadron to be able to deploy two Delta Dart aircraft to Goose AB, Labrador for possible use in identifying intruding Soviet bombers penetrating the Greenland-Iceland-U.K. (GIUK) Line, which had been occurring with increasing frequency during the year. Soviet Bear bombers woiuld frequently fly through Icelandic airspace (escorted by F-102As of the 57th FIS) and head towards the North American continent, intercepted by CAF CF-101B and ADC F-106 aircraft, then would continue on down the east coast to land in Cuba. The 27th FIS at Loring AFB, Maine was the first assigned College Shaft squadron. On 13 May 1969, after 3 TU-95 Bear bombers penetrated the GIUK Line, 2 F-106As of the 27th FIS were scrambled from Loring, landed at Goose and were refueled, then intercepted the Bear bombers 150 miles from the North American continent (700 miles from Loring). This was the first time that east coast CONUS-based ADC interceptors made contact with Soviet bombers. The Bears turned back after interception. ADC interceptors from Iceland and Alaska had already made interceptions of Soviet bombers previously. Mike D.
  2. File Name: No. 1 Sqdn Hurricanes File Submitter: mppd File Submitted: 30 Dec 2008 File Category: British Commonwealth These markings are intended for Capun's Hurricane I as installed in Baltika's Battle of Britain SFP1 campaign. Back up your original files if you wish, then add these files to the "1" folder. There are still a few texture mapping issues, but all-in-all it looks like a Hurricane to me. I take little credit for the textures - they are mostly borrrowed from the best that I found on the Internet, I just adapted them to the model. Thanks go to "Stag", Gramps, Baltika, Wrench, and anyone else I forgot that deserves the real credit. Legal bit: Since these textures are hardly my original work, please don't use them for any commercial purposes - they are for free to increase the enjoyment of the Battle of Britain campaign. The .TGA decals are mine, so do what you want with them. Historical bit: No. 1 Squadron of the RAF equipped with Hurricane I aircraft in 1938. The original "NA" codes were replaced by "JX" in September 1939. After operations during the Battle of France, the unit was relocated back to Tangmere 23 June 1940 where it operated under 11 Group, entering combat during the Battle of Britain from August 1940.On 09 September the squadron was withdrawn to RAF Wittering under 12 Group to rest, recuperate and refit. More units to come. Mike D. Click here to download this file
  3. Never been in the military myself, but I have crawled around many of these at airshows in the 70s and 80s plus at Niagara Falls several times, and taken lots of photos, and I have to say that Enrico did a VERY nice 3D modeling and texture mapping job on this model. If awards were given out, this has to get my vote as the most accurate airplane created for the Third Wire series in a long time, and it's just incredible as freeware. I have been proud to be a part of the project. It absolutely deserves a download!! Mike
  4. Roger that. Initially designed as a strategic bomber escort, it ended up as a tactical fighter without AAM capability. They were withdrawn in 64-65 time period and some were converted to RF-101G/H configuration for the ANG to get some use out of the airframes. Believed to have stood nuclear alert while stationed at Bentwaters in Europe. Mike D.
  5. I can't locate the exact figures either, but typical armament for a Hun is 7500 lbs I think. With a drop tank on each wing, look for 1x500/750 on each of the remaining pylons. The TER on the inboard CAN carry 3xMk81s but NOT 3xMk82s/Snakeye, and certainly NOT 3xM117 750 lb GP. The use of the TER was VERY rare in Southeast Asia on Huns - would love to see some photos. Probably all went to F-4 units. Nape, Snake or a single GP is the norm. Occasional CBU. Mike D.
  6. File Name: Alternative underside Hurricane texture File Submitter: mppd File Submitted: 30 Dec 2008 File Category: British Commonwealth Here is an alternative texture for my No. 1 sqdn Hurricane package. Many sources quote the underside Duck Egg Blue color as having a distint greenish tint. Both A and B schemes are presented here - the A scheme in the post-August 1940 period with the smaller fin flashes and larger underwing roundels. Mike D. Click here to download this file

  9. O.K. I'll try her - send her over.... No Battle of Britain terrain choices here...Hmmffg...Man once you do a WW2 install, you'll never go back! Mpd
  10. I must be getting old - I had to do a search on Google to find out who she was... Mike
  11. I started a series of Hurricane markings for Capun's Hurry, intended for Baltika's Battle of Britain campaign. I found enough references for actual airplane serial numbers (with some matching squadron codes also). I'll do his flyable campaign squadrons then I'll do the others. Mike D.
  12. Not sure how to state this properly.... No. 66 Squadron never flew the Buffalo - but No. 67 Squadron did - Singapore and Burma. Looks great - especially the Battle! Mike
  13. Go into your InVidea control panel and try setting anisotropic filtering to the max (16x). I followed this tip and my graphics looked 100% better. Mike D.
  14. Those marks look great! We need a France campaign now. No work around for the radiator scoop issue I guess, but still a good base model to shoot me-109s down in all-in-all. The A scheme is just a mirror image - should be no problem flipping the skin and doctoring it up a bit. MPD
  15. The fuselage roundel is on the base art, the codes and serial are one decal - there is still a slight bleed under the fuselage, but it doesn't bother me that much - much less without the roundel. The decal as suggested covers the tailwheel strut. I can release the squadrons as I do them - I hate to wait to try to do a bunch and release a big package (that I may never finish...). Have to sit down and watch the movie on DVD again though. I checked out Baltika's campaign to add the 11 Group squadrons that he missed...and there are none! They are all there - great work on the campaign!! It is well worth the download by anyone wanting a WW2 install of this classic battle! More to come.. Mike
  16. I think that I missed this in all of the threads and the knowledge base, but can a squadron in a campaign be forced to move to a specified new base at a historical time? Campaign data lists as NEVER or a percentage of probability to relocate to a new random base. Thanks, Mike D.
  17. OUTSTANDING! Exactly what I was looking for. My sincere thanks Johan. Is this for versions before the current patches also?? Thanks again for the reply, Mike druzolowski
  18. Do not try to use the earlier .LODs in the final patched versions - they won't work. The new patched version seems to have fixed a few issues (like leading edge flaps) so thanks to TK.
  19. I too am more a skinner than anything else, but sometimes when you get going on a project, it helps to spread the word around to see if anyone wants to jump onboard, and perhaps start some project that's connected somehow (or has already done it but never uploaded it!). We all bring to the table whatever we can. Eventually I somehow envision every airplane, every campaign, every color scheme done and available to everyone!! The Third Wire sims are just amazing in this way. Can't thank the entire CombatAce community enough for all that they've done and shared for free with everyone else! Thanks again to all. Mike D.
  20. Neg - I tried the only plug-in texture filters Photoshop 4 had, and at 2048 pixels, the canvas effects were way too gross. I figured out my antenna map area. Was driving me nuts at first...As I said, mostly stolen from the best I can find. I'm just about ready to start doing units. Dug up all of my RAF references. A neat website I found also: http://www.epibreren.com/ww2/raf/index.html Lists losses by squadron - good reference. The Internet is a wonderful thing!! What would it take to do up a battle of France campaign??
  21. You just never know what you're going to see working at the airport... Merry Christmas to one and all. Mike D.
  22. Decals work on new textures. Looks like the roundel needs to be on the base art though, as it does bleed to the bottom of the fuselage. Can't figure out where the radio mast got colored white though! I'll decal it like Wrench said... Mike
