http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22206208-2,00.html Aussie fighter jets laser target car in traffic TWO Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F/A-18 Hornets accidentally directed weapon-guiding laser beams into moving traffic during training exercises on the New South Wales north coast earlier this year. A RAAF investigation found the Litening laser targeting system on board two of the multi-million dollar planes inadvertently activated for a total of 43 seconds during evaluation flights on May 28. The two F/A-18 Hornets from RAAF Base Newcastle aimed their laser beams at one car during simulated targeting of a road intersection near Forster. Despite the laser beams hitting the car while eight others were in the vicinity, the investigation concluded the chances of injury were remote. The laser incidents occurred at the corner of The Lakes Way and Seal Rocks Road at approximately 11.30am and 4.15pm on May 28. "Air Force sets the highest standards in its OH&S and duty of care to the community when conducting training or evaluation flights," Air Commodore Geoff Brown, the Air Force director general of capability planning, said. "Air Force commissioned an investigation which has concluded that the likelihood of anyone being injured in this incident is remote. "This is based on advice from several experienced aviation medical specialists in Australia and overseas." A Department of Defence fact sheet said the risk of eye exposure to drivers is considered low, but inadvertent exposure can cause permanent eye damage to the retina. The air crew thought the laser designator could not operate because it was in training mode, defence said. RAAF and US Air Force specialists have advised they are not aware of any instances where people on the ground were injured by lasers coming from a plane.
  2. Personally, I've been intrigued about a "what if" B-47 after hearing the RAAF evaluated 3 of them in the early 60's, amongst other what ifs... like the RNZAF F-16s.
  3. The Fog of War

Ah... I see... So I didn't have to be do diplomatic after all. Still, I'm going to bite my lip about why I think he's a douchebag.
  4. WOOT

Yeah, what happened? I had nothing to do at work, except to actual work!
  5. And what about Kiwis? Are Kiwis welcome or are we not speaking to them since the All-Blacks handed our arses back to us?
  6. No matter what it's called, it's a gem! Very polished! Good stuff guys! Chaser, Mitsubishi released a product manual with some glossy snaps of AAM-3,4 and the concept work for 5 a while back. I know they've been posted online so you should be able to get some decent screenies. I used to have access to some shots of them from an online jouranl (from my old job), but it seems my access has been disabled. Phooey! I'm talking with a mate of mine, he should be able to post some to me. AAM-3 is pretty fugly! The stab-fin near the warhead have a bit of a halberd look to them... AAM-4 just looks like an AMRAAM with love handles.
  7. A damn fine source for RAAF skins can be found here: http://www.grampsflightsims.com/ I'm just trying to think off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure the following are available: Fast movers: A-4G Skyhawk (Plus a few sweet Kiwi A-4K Kahu skins) Mirage IIIO F/A-18A Hornet The C/G Pig F-4E Phantom I've seen skins for the CA.27 Sabre, can't remember where though. Slow movers: Canberra B.8 C-130J Hercules (plus a pseudo bomber version) AP-3C Orion S-2F/G Tracker Trainers (both with the Roulettes scheme I think) MB.326H PC-9A Helicopters: S-70 and UH-60 Sea/Blackhawks UH-1H Iriqois (I thought I saw a Sea King skin around somewhere) and finally, the Tiger ARH I can't recall if there's a Neptune available. If there is, it'll probably be at Capun's skunworks. There are more pre-1960's skins available, but my tastes lie with the post 60's stuff. If I've missed any, feel free to call me on it because I'm keen for an SF style Donnie Brook! What about "What If" stuff, what are people's opinions on that?
  8. The Fog of War

I have to admit, I used to think he was a complete douchebag for several reasons I won't go into, but after seeing the docco, I felt he did give quite a good account of himself and I saw just how much I'd dehumanised him. I mean still, there are things I completely disagree with him about but... he's still human. If you haven't seen it, grab it, it's a really good watch!
  9. Yeah, but... who said that's the default loudout for CAS in the screenie? Good stuff Marc! Look up quality in the dictionary and I'm willing to bet we see a snapshot of you there
  10. F/A-22

No no, please don't misunderstand me. What I meant was SFP is almost certainly going to be the sim to get a Raptor next. As far as I know, all of the aircraft in LOMAC are hardcoded, so you simply can't 'add' a new plane into it like you can with the SFP series. The best LOMAC could offer... MAYBE, and I stress maybe because I'm not even sure it's possible, MAYBE a model could be added but it would have to replace an existing flyable model and even then, you would still be using the flight model of the aircraft you have replaced. And that's what sucks about LOMAC as it would be a great sim for a Raptor! But that's even if its possible at all, and from what I hear, I doubt it. You'd probably be better off with a dedicated F-22 sim or one with an F-22 in it (or waiting for the SFP one)
  11. If your problem in general is (any)Soviet aircraft that have no weapons, 99% of the time it'll be because they'll use "WP" instead of SOVIET" in the weapons. Listen to Foobs, USAFMTL and Spanner as they've spent a tonne of time working on the knowledge base and it is pretty helpful once you get a feel for the file structure of SFP/WOV/WOE and the layouts of the inis.
  12. F/A-22

...yeah... good luck. It'll be available for the SFP series before LOMAC. Sorry, I know it doesn't help you out Mr. Forsythe but the silver lining is that the crew that's working hard away in their secret underground lair developing the F-22 for SFP series will do a pretty darn good job as they're very thourough!
  13. Yeah, old maybe, but she's been worn in nicely! Besides, with a bit of tweaking, you can still have a Spad that's a toothy, versitile platform. I've got a ficticious variant (A-1K) set up to use laser and TV guided missiles, ECM pods and even a twin rack for sidewinders and, thanks in large to the PC-9 engine effect from Mdlemast's PC-9 release, my bird has a new, slightly more powerful engine now... Who needs A-10s? I mean, I can understand if you like your tank killers ugly and sounding like a 737 maybe Just a heads up Tmdgm, when firing your guns in the free Spad, it has a tendency to pull up like an AK (or so videogames have led me to believe). Its less of a problem in other old timey propjobs ie, Hurricaine, Spitire etc.
  14. I've got that book too but I don't remember seeing it. Are there any colour snaps of it or is it in black and white?
  15. Good stuff Kev! Can't wait to try this when I get home!
  16. Don't forget the IIIO(D) which was the family wagon! I know Gramps' version came with the tactical green camo and a double grey camo which I'm pretty sure is fictional. But does anyone know if the low viz blue/grey is in the works? If not, I might have a bash at making one... eventually
  17. Say it ain't so...

    Touché
  18. Didn't IAI work closely with the Chinese on this plane? I'm not sure if it was IAI in particular, but there was denfinitely Israeli support. I've heard that it wasn't necessarily covert, but it wasn't very public. And considing the sh*tfit the US government had when they discovered IAI was contracted to install a Phalcon AWACS radar into an Il-76/A-50, I wouldn't have been surprised if they'd done the same for the J-10 assistance had they known. But I can't seem to confirm this...
  19. Are you kidding? The Lavi was practically a copy of the early model F-16s but the J-10 is a whole generation more advanced! It may have been influenced by the Lavi, but this isn't going to be the next 'Mig-29', this one's going to have sharper teeth for sure!
  20. Say it ain't so...

People bag John Rambo for being old, but no-one ever questions why the human forces sent a 60yr old looking Terminator back from the future...
  21. The Worst City Names in the World

They didn't add Iron Knob, SA! I used to go out with a Kentuckian who used to think that Perth was some kind of condition!
  22. You gotta see this.......

There's that one, a version of sister act and a couple of others they do. The thriller one is pretty damn funny to watch!
  23. F/A-22

Both of them are in dev for SFP, no eta on when exactly they'll be released as the parties involves are currently mid-way through existing projects or are otherwise busy with real life issues. They'll be coming, so don't worry about that, for more info, check out the WIP thread. When you enter Thirdwire series/general discussion it'll be one of the first four threads.
  24. Nah, my Tomcat wings totally work! I don't get why yours don't. Are you flying the Tommy or is it an AI pilot? If you're using the fly all aircraft mod, I've noticed there are issues with some o the aircraft from time to time. I had an issue where debris grills on my Mig-29 wouldn't open, even when hitting Mach 1.5... Try a re-install if all else fails.
  25. More Flankers!

Yeah, but those numbers... Nah, it smacks of dodgy reporting to me. Maybe half that number and even if it were true, that number would eventually be revised down. I'm sure there were reports in Iranian and Russian papers about the US looking to buy 5000 new stealth planes (JSF) to replace the F-16 that would have been taken out of context too. Russia is going to have some difficulty in making military sales to Iran anyhow. You should see the number of partitians and agreements they have to jump just to have the Mig-29s supplied and maintained!
