CPG Poll 1: Multiplayer
SayethWhaaaa replied to column5's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I voted for advanced because that's what I'd like to see, but I'd settle for basic because, usually, if I get together with mates for some local BF2/Zero Hour/NFS Underground 2 style action, that sorta resembles how we play. Right now as it stands, SF series MP isn't terrible. I've had some great dogfights with other players, but it can be finicky to use from time to time. Last time I played, DaSpungie (A canuck I might add, least I think he is ) had to set up a server for a few of us Aussies to use because HL wouldn't allow us to create a game for ourselves for some reason. Now that could have been for several reasons, but my point is most MP orientated games don't have this problem. One of the hardest aspects of this game to implement into MP would be the use of player created/modded aircraft and the possible exploitation of game quirks or other ways of cheating. I could see dodgier players shrinking their hit zone surfaces to make it nigh on impossible to strike, or multiple weapons sharing the same hardpoints and so on. Again, I'd settle for having a LAN setup that doesn't randomly crash when using non stock aircraft. But for me, this is hardly an issue when considering everything else I can do when tinkering around with this sim... ALthough I would like to have a co-op game again someday. It's been close to 6 months now. I'm having withdrawls!! -

Which Aircraft do you like most
SayethWhaaaa replied to hgbn's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hey! What are you talking about?? It starts 'F-', it has three digits beginning with a 1, helped reshaped the concept of "low level penetration strike" at a time when fighters weren't designed to hunt for attackers in the weeds. Carried tonnes of ordinance and could drop them all on your doorstep... That's like saying the F-117 isn't part of the century series... just because someone never corrected the typo fo 'F' instead of 'B'. I'd go for the F-106 if only because it was a mean piece of kit in it's day, and because the Delta Dart is a distant cousin... -

Or "What about the brown cow?" You guys are right, this is complete BS! But he has made it clear that he is an extremist, an anti-semite and a complete wanker... We may just have found our Douchebag of the year for 2008! Maybe a few thousand hours of forced viewing of Degrassi Junior High will teach him not to mouth off to a country that's opted to take him in. Or we could just give Claude Lemieux or Tie Domi a call to administer what it is that they do best... :black eye: People like this really give me the s**ts! -
Soviet incursion into Japanese airspace
SayethWhaaaa replied to MigBuster's topic in Military and General Aviation
I heard earlier on the BBC that technically Japan and Russia/USSR have never signed a peace treaty after WWII due to disputes over the Kuril islands. Maybe that might explain part of the reason behind Japan's response. Plus, they've been aware of the VVS's plans to resume long range flights. May have been counter-sabre rattling by Japan... -

You think they're trying to send the message "Nobody %^&*'s with Japan!"?? You know... If they had F-22s, That'd probably read "Japan responded by scrambling A jet..." -
Oh god! We totally need a Hello Kitty mod for San Andreas...

How in the bloody hell is it that someone can use my keycode and boot me from a server, yet I can't rejoin and boot them!!! BASTARDOS!!! NOT HAPPY JAN!!

Photobucket’s really good to use. Flixter’s not bad either. I go with PB personally because it’s too easy to use! -
DREAMS COMES TRUE!

I was thinking more in terms of economies of scale too. The F-22 and F-35 share a lot of the construction materials and method used to build both, so developing the infrastructure for the second aircraft, or the second generation is slightly cheaper since you don't have to redesign the wheel the second time round. Plus, the more you build, the cheaper the unit price eventually becomes. Also, there were no other stealth aircraft being built when the F-22 started production (excepting the B-2 program maybe?), where as there is with the F-35, so there will be a ready supply of RAM materials, specific composite products etc and more importantly, there's much more of a market for these materials since many nations are trialling them with their existing conventional aircraft (ie, India, France, Russia) and they're not as 'classified' as they once were. This wasn't the case ten years ago. This, IMHO, is why I think Russia has been so successful in marketing the Su-30 family since their main arguments: "readily available parts/no specialised maintenance, comparable capability, low comparable cost, RCS augmentation available" have shown that you can develop a nation's capability without having to massively develop infrastructure or rely on one nation so heavily or even be at the absolute cutting edge to counter a perceived threat. Its not about "This is better than the F-22", it sorta shows that you don't have to spend ridiculous amounts of money on a project for a generational advantage (or equilibrium) . You know, parity of capability for the discerning (poorer or otherwise tightarsed) nation... Nevertheless, I'm still not going to rush out to place my cash on a Flanker for the next Flanker vs Raptor fight. But it does explain why they're pretty popular when you consider the number of Mig-21s, 29s, F-15s and F-16s still in service around the world. -

Jedi's right. USAFMTL's rrrrr.... rrrrrr... he's not wrong either. It was just a low airspeed demonstrator and proof of concept vehicle. Most of the materials in it weren't being used in Russian production aircraft at the time. I was thinking along the lines of more of a fictional Grabacr, Ace Combat style Berkut. But I was clutching at straws and Berkut is the closest thing out there (in the downloads section) that could be rushed into the game that represents an advanced Russian fighter that could possibly (that's a BIG 'if'). Even if it could only possibly fit a pair of IRMs and a pair of SAHM/AHMs in it's proposed weapons bays. Now an F-22 vs F-23 rematch... that's something I'd like to see. PS, Not meaning to be egging you on Dave, but the one weakness the F-22 hardliners hardly ever seem to mention is it's MASSIVE, MASSIVE cost. MASSIVE. But it is the first production stealth fighter on the planet, and it's technologies are all new and SotA so you have to expect that. I'm interested to see how much cheaper stealth technologies become after the F-35 starts showing up in numbers. That and you guys won't share your toys! Now an JASDF F-22 would be sweet... -
Oh yeah, I just realised something. After it didn't come out within 2 years, I moved on... LOL! Duke who?

In all seriousness though, when I used to mod Descent FS2, we knew a bunch of female voice actors. I'll see if they're still keen to do some VO. It might sound strange to you guys though since you all have those funny accents... Don't know anyone around here (home) with a yank sounding accent who does VOs though... -

Your Favorite Real Aircraft and Why?
SayethWhaaaa replied to Dave's topic in Military and General Aviation
I'll pay that. I love the fact that something as ugly as the BUFF has persevered for so long and set new standards in capabilities and fugliness! It was one of my faves as a kid. I've got a whole bunch that appeal to me, but the Herc is one outstanding piece of kit IMHO. 50 year old design, more uses than Lego, I've seen them land and take off from everything but water, carries your troops, ferries your cargo, delivers your pizza... I mean is there anything it can't do?? And now this sucka is going to be frying your enemies in the blink of an eye... Think about it, designed around the time when jet engines were relatively new and still being perfected, now one of the first airborne platforms to carry a chemical laser... -

There aren't any Su-35s for the moment dude, but Fastcargo's been cool enough to distract himself long enough to whip up some canard/pylon mods for the Flanker (and some other, lesser plane, not important really ) so we can have the illusion of having an Su-33/35... You can find that goody here...
