what if planes
SayethWhaaaa replied to 76.IAP-Blackbird's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
I love the look of this one! As for the loadout, unlike a lot of th folks here, most people don't understand enough about stealth to realise external loads create larger radar return. We had a lot of difficulty explaining this to our previous government... and you see it reflected in comics and art and so from time to time. -
Odd aircraft - Dornier Do 200 for example
SayethWhaaaa posted a topic in Military and General Aviation
I'm kinda into aircraft that "didn't quite make it" or were used in service in unconventional ways and I'm just wondering what information any of you might have. Case in point: The Dornier Do 200 This Luftwaffe B-17 is a bugger to find online, and these seem to be the only snaps I can find. There's a brief history on Wiki, but information seems to be quite scarce. I do remember having an article on German use of captured Allied aircraft during WWII, but bugger me if I can find it (plus it was something like 15 years ago when I had it). I was thinking about making a skin for one of the SFP Forts but I'd need better shots. Another aircraft is the PZL-230 Scorpion Although, I'm not particularly keen on this last version. This would have been an interesting CAS vehicle, but again, these are practically the only shots I can seem to find plus information (aside from what's on wiki) seems to be very brief about the nature of the program. I know the information should be out there somewhere, anyone have any suggestions as to where I start. I was thinking Jane's, but the Jane's entry I've seen is almost identical. Any help...? -
F-16F

Screw the IAF, they've already got the Soufa, why should they get to double dip?? You've got a point though. A "what if the JSF proves too costly therefore we're producing advanced F-16 to meet our future needs until we get appropriations to fund additional JSFs" skin would be cool. -

No, it's cool. I didn't realise it'd been uploaded again. I'll give that one a go. -

Dude, I'm going through my physical assessments at the moment and the women I've been training with have been kicking my arse! I train regularly, I play ice hockey and run a lot (it helps keep my shafted immune system and asthma from screwing me!) and they're training to the same standards I am. Only difference is that we'll all be assessed slightly differently, but the standards are pretty damned high! Silverbolt, I love that Brazilian Navy skin! It's gold. I can't wait to add the hornet to the Brazilian navy BG in my campaign! -
Lockheed to supply 18 F-16s to Pakistan

I figured it would be the hard point, FCS and other relative avionic systems. Aren't even the tac nukes quite heavy in comparison the regular stores carried? Also, again it's off topic, but are nuclear capable aircraft fitted with radometers or whatever they're called to monitor local radiation? I expect bombers and heavier aircraft are but what about tactical aircraft? -

SayethWhaaaa replied to ghostrider883's topic in Military and General Aviation
Yeah, they do have the capability to carry tactical nukes, but I hate to admit it but Dave's rig... he's not wrong. Just kidding dude! There was a Regional Capability Assessment publication from the MoD here from around 2002/3 that looked into the capability of regional (Asia/Pacific) militaries and their ability to project their respective nuclear reach and I remember reading that the PAF has the capacity to modify their vipers to carry tac nukes, but (officially anyways) they're not supposed to have any configured in such a way. But who's going to know? The Mirage IIIs they used to operate supposedly had a similar capacity but I don't recall reading if they actually did do so. I just remember there being something of a kafuffle amongst the government here about it after we sold our retired Mirage IIIOs to them. -
I still think the X-32 would have been able to drop ice into your scotch from 10 000m given half a chance. Something that ugly had to be freakin' good...

Sweet... I was trying to figure out something similar with the C-130... So you can deploy these guys like regular ordinance and the M-38? -

Weren't they buying (or at least 90% sure they are) approx 100+ J-10s along the FC-17 (you were right Jedi )... ? The capabilities are supposed to be equivalent to the blk 50 F-16s, and yes I know it's China, but they've surprised us all recently! I figure it'd just make the F-16 purchase kind superfluous. -

Nice... Like an FB-22 that needs to tone up a bit. It's a lil' flabby, the other fighters might make fun of it! -

Don't forget Nawaz Sharif, the former PM who effectively gave the go ahead for the Pakistani Army to start the Kagril dust up with India and turned a blind eye to the Pakistani-Kashmiri separatists. A war that resulted in something like 4000 Pakistani casualties. And he's the other Horse to back since Benazir Bhutto's death?? Anyways, I digress. What I meant by the Iran reference was the investing in another country with expensive, advanced (relatively) military harware, only for it to potentially fall into the hands of the intended recipient's enemies... just like in Iran. But isn't this all a bit of a moot point? Isn't this deal just a revised version of the original plan to sell F-16A/Bs to the PAF, the one that was interrupted by the nuclear (not nyu-kyiller ) which resulted in them being transferred to the Navy as F-16N aggressors? Or is this a separate deal entirely? Oh, and Tx3rn, I'd be STUNNED if there was a plausible plan in place to secure the 100 or however many Pakistani nukes that had the co-operation of the Pakistani authorities!! It didn't happen in the former CIS, but then again, that region is comparatively stable compared to South Asia... -

Well... they do have those other 35 (plus the other 26 they supposedly have). Either way, it doesn't seem particularly wise thing to do. Kinda like selling F-14s to the Shah, for example... -
You're both wrong, it's Brittany! Does anyone remember when her filthy secret of being trailer trash was just that, a secret?? I'm with you guys, Baaaaaaa. The Mach 5 looks sweet, but I'll be my left nut that the script was written on the back of a coaster and writer up until last week thought Mach 5 was some kind of shaver. What doesn't sit well with me is the thinking that you can make a film like Speed Racer with a car designed in the 60s to look futuristic that's set in contemporary times... it's like trying to convince oneself that the Firefox is just as stealthy and advanced as the F-22, despite it's obvious age and advancements since. I reckon it's gonna die in the ass like the Thunderbirds...

Does anyone here play Zero Hour?? I was helping to mod it with some like minded buddies, but since I bought my new machine, I cannot get it to run at all. I've checked online to see if there are any issues with it and the Geforce 8800GT, and there appear to be none, yet it won't run. What could I be missing here?? We're in the process of modding the hell out of it since the standard version is just boring as bat sh*t to my buds and I. Doing things like having Scuds that can practically hit you from the other side of an 8 player map, Gattling cannons that fire like gats should (ie one round every tenth of a second, not every half second), B-2s that get low and fast, as opposed to being billion dollar sitting ducks, armoured personnel carriers that actually have armour, and so on... ...and it's just a little frustrating having it crash after double clicking the icon.

Righteo... reckon I may have diagnosed part of the problem. It could be relative to the PCIE thingo in my PC. Apparantly, this is a bit of an issue with this game and a few others...

Happy bday dude! It's a crappy time of year for it, innit? There's always gotta be one relative who gives you the Xmas AND birthday present!

That's the one with the extended exhaust, yeah? -
That's not necessarily so. After the overthrow of the Shah, a pair of Tomcats were supposedly shipped off to the USSR along with a consignment of parts, a few remaining relevant maintenance crew and several Aim-54A Phoenix missiles. I'm not sure if this was 1980 or 1981, I'll look into it, but it coincides with when the Phoenix was treated as being compromised.

I'm gonna go with Sloth. I get to hang upside down for about 23 hours a day. I sleep a lot, I do sweet F.A. It'd be sweet! Or a Koala. They sleep 22 hours a day, hang out for an hour, eat and get high as sh*t from eucalyptus (it's true, look it up) for the rest of the time. Occasionally make some grunty noises. Although, my sex life would be pretty crap though. Either way I go, Sloth or Koala, the women in my life would have hairy chests... ...that's kind of a bummer.

Won't happen. Firstly, the Senate still gets the F-22 and F-35 confused. There have been a few calls to bypass the F-35 and grab the F-22, usually from the think tanks, a couple of times from sitting members, but not from either the MoD or the RAAF. Plus, despite this not being stated officially although everyone in the industry and in government will say this off the record, no one in any government will ever purchase a plane who's unit costs match that of an ANZAC frigate. There are simple too many uninformed people in the government (and unfortunately the RAAF) who don't understand the nuances of the growing capability gap in the Asia-Pacific region and believe silver bullets or panaceas... that simply having better missiles or better radar will do the job. There is SO much more to it than that! Stealth is the latest buzzword and we run the risk of governments relying too much on the hype and forsaking capability. It doesn't help that legacies from the cold war like not taking Russian equipment seriously don't help either. Oh, and for the record, no, RAAF F/A-18+ Hornets would not match regional Su-30s if they were being effectively maintained and manned by skilled pilots. The technology gap between the two planes is far too great. Consider that the RAAF has only been training and operating AMRAAM for about 6-8 years now. But then again, our neighbours have a tough time of finding funding for maintaining their fleets, let alone flying them!
