Expanding the VPAF in WOV
Jug replied to allenjb42's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I added a Chinese Q-5 and a Su-7BM. Used mod aircraft and changed the [aircraft]_data.ini (for the Q-5)as follows: [MissionData] NationName=NVietnam <--- changed this Then I changed one of the camo skins' folder names that came with the mod aircraft to NorthVietnam01 Changed the decals.ini to reflect the size and location of the national insignia. If the decal mentioned says INSIGNIA, then the decal will be the national insignia designated above in the data.ini [MissionData]. If you need to move the decals around, play with the position numbers (Aft-Fwd from center, Up-Dwn from center) and the Rotation (0-level) to suit you. Changed the decals.ini to use the numbers on the nose like the VPAF MiG-17F. Put some lights on that bad boy as follows: // Lights --------------------------------------------------------- //Position=[right/left of centerline],[fwd/aft from acft center],[above/below acft center] [LeftPositionLight] SystemType=LIGHT Position=-4.52,-2.917,-0.133 LightSrcOffset=-0.2,0.00,0.00 Color=0.98,0.25,0.25 Brightness=0.03 LightSrcRange=0.5 CanFlash=FALSE [RightPositionLight] SystemType=LIGHT Position=4.52,-2.917,-0.133 LightSrcOffset=0.20,0.00,0.00 Color=0.25,0.98,0.25 Brightness=0.03 LightSrcRange=0.5 CanFlash=FALSE [RedTailLight] SystemType=LIGHT Position=0.0,-6.122,2.54 LightSrcOffset=0.00,0.00,0.20 Color=0.98,0.25,0.25 Brightness=0.03 LightSrcRange=0.4 CanFlash=FALSE [TailLight] SystemType=LIGHT Position=0.0,-6,0.72 LightSrcOffset=0.00,0.20,0.00 Color=0.88,0.88,0.88 Brightness=0.03 LightSrcRange=0.3 CanFlash=FALSE [TopRotatingBeacon] SystemType=LIGHT Position=0,0,1.045 LightSrcOffset=-0.20,0.00,0.00 Color=0.88,0.05,0.05 Brightness=0.07 LightSrcRange=0.5 CanFlash=TRUE FlashTime=0.5 [bottomRotatingBeacon] SystemType=LIGHT Position=0,0.5,-0.6 LightSrcOffset=-0.20,0.00,0.00 Color=0.88,0.05,0.05 Brightness=0.07 LightSrcRange=0.5 CanFlash=TRUE FlashTime=0.5 [landinglight1] SystemType=Light Color=0.88,0.88,0.88 Brightness=0.05 Position=-0.8800,0.4741,-0.1375 LightSrcOffset=2.6046,49.0560,0.0 LightSrcRange=150 LightRange=45.0 CanFlash=FALSE LightNodeName=LandingLight IsLandingLight=TRUE [landinglight2] SystemType=Light Color=0.88,0.88,0.88 Brightness=0.05 Position=0.8800,0.4741,-0.1375 LightSrcOffset=2.6046,49.0560,0.0 LightSrcRange=150 LightRange=45.0 CanFlash=FALSE LightNodeName=LandingLight IsLandingLight=TRUE Then proceeded to launch strike missions against the Americans. Then realized how much an attack capability from the VPAF would have changed the complexion of the Vietnam Air war. -
This fits in a unique category of the worst post ever here at CA.................

Need to keep in mind that the alternative to getting older is an unknown (few returning reports).........................

Is there a flying model of the SR-71
Jug replied to Fatman's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I think the Italian Mafia here at CA have a WIP, but status is unknown. Good friend of mine, sled driver, said his aircraft had a complete INS dump which left him without anything but a magnetic compass (like you stick on your sunshade in your car) on the Murmansk fun run from Mildenhall, UK, and quoted, "Let me tell you, when you are lost at Mach 3, you're really lost". Obviously, they made it back, but their return was a little off resulting in an unannounced and spectacular fly-by of the Arc de Triumph. Then again, that's another story.............. -
Highly interesting: Red Flag lecture
Jug replied to Brain32's topic in Military and General Aviation
Here's a pure hardware thought: 1st production Eagle flew when: 1st production Su-27 flew when: 1st production F-16 flew when: 1st production MiG-29 flew when: Fill in the blanks and realize we're talking old vs new. My 35 year old Eagle got hosed by my 7 year old Flanker. My 30 year old Viper got waxed by my 18 year old Fulcrum. Seems a pretty good statement that the Eagle and Viper were even in the game. Want to talk new vs new, don't have any Red Flags with that level of opposition.....Raptor vs Flanker.......................yet! -

Very well done, Veltro! -
I spend some worthless time attempting to convince my spouse that things you cannot do anything about are useless things to worry about. Since she likes to worry (she says things she worries about never happen, so worrying must work), it is a never ending battle for an unachievable objective. Most of us lead complicated enough lives, so here is some things that I like to believe when dealing with my country and my government: 1) Most people in my government are just like me, ethical, pragmatic, patriotic, and working hard to sustain our country as it should be. 2) People in my government have differing views on the path forward, but are not on different teams. 3) Military people don't do politics and when they try they do it really badly. 4) Most politicos should not do military and when they try - FUBAR (hence the foundation of the phrase and the reason that going for the tie [Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, etc.] is fashionable). 5) We have an endless supply of military/politicos who just don't get 3 and 4. 6) When I was in the military, I really didn't care who my government pointed me at or why ( I, literally, trust them with my life), I just cared foremost that I was ready, willing and able to kick the living s**t out of whomever I was pointed at. I expect the same from my successors and they have lived up to those expectations in spades!! 7) The question, "Who benefits?" uncovers most mysteries, conspiracies, crimes, etc. 8) I, always, vote. That is as far as I go in contemplating things out of my grasp. Keeps my priority/to-do list managable. 9) There is nothing in the political world that will not eventually come out and politicos are all "TEMPs". 10) Every personal situation can be positively approached by reviewing what you're thankful for prior to getting to what's bothering you. (OK, wrong list for this one) This list is not all-inclusive, but kinda leaves me with few opinions on conspiracy theories and the like. At the end of the day, conspiracy theories grind down to who is trying to sell the book or make the movie (7 above). Life should be very simple and the only thing that makes it not so is the idle time we all suffer running laps between our ears. So much for Jug Philosophy 101 which is somewhat like a WAIMS clearance I once got from a Canadian traffic controller when my navigator was not having a good celestial navigation leg, "BUFF 101, cleared to wander aimlessly across northern Canada, maintain FL350".

Evading SAM & Air to Air Missles
Jug replied to TheStig's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Actually, I have found after a low fast ingress, that a barrel roll is perfect for gaining the altitude I need for a dumb bomb attack, a built-in defensive maneuver, and an opportunity to set up the attack. However, it is a far cry from one of those gracefull manuevers that are described as a barrel roll in books or displayed in airshows. It is more like pop up heading about 30 degrees offset from my target, pull over the target while gaining a couple of thousand feet, no burner (don't care to provide a heat source to interested parties), roll inverted down to my planned attack dive angle and quick roll to upright, hopefully with the pipper on the little red box (target). Leave the throttle where it was during ingress. Your airspeed will have bled off during the pop-up so you have a bit more time for final attack adjustments. Drop everything you have (One pass - haul ass). If you are smart, and I am not always smart, my egress will have already been set up by moving to the target egress waypoint. Drop down to an altitude where the alitimeter reads red (real low) and let the jet accelerate on out bringing the heading around to the white triangle (waypoint). If available, chaff and flares out at various stages in the maneuver. Most of my in-game experience is in WoV, but in my intermittant excursions into WoE and WoI, the same attack pattern is good to go. -

You know, I have this constant battle with my wife, who reads my body language to suit her purpose and steadfastly ignores the words I say. What the USAF Colonel had to say, in my opinion, was very complimentary of the IAF and very respectful of the SU-30 and the MiG-21 Bison. His swagger is just what fighter pilots do. Bye the way, have you ever noticed that "respected and revered" journalists are respected an revered only by other journalists. Media types are bystanders, as in not in the game........ever! They start with a huge credibility gap and rarely fail to finish much higher. Back seat rides in a fighter equate to a Congressional Delegation for one day to any country. Nice photo ops, but not much real content. I'd rather hear from a retiree. I spent some quality time with the IAF attache to Brazil when I was stationed there bellyed up to the bar and off the record. He was a MiG-21 driver and was actively engaged in several air battles with Pakistan. I came away from those meetings with a touch of a hangover and a profound respect for another professional military aviator. If this gentleman is typical of the standard the IAF sets for their own service, then any country should think carefully prior to taking them on. Notice I haven't mentioned hardware at all and for good reason. The guy on the stick is the real difference maker, not what the stick is attached to. I take no offense in good criticism of my country's aircraft, because it is my tax money too that pays for what the lowest bidder rolls off the assembly line. I have been trained sufficiently to fly without incident dangerous aircraft in dangerous places on dangerous missions for some twenty years. I am very satisfied that my AF, and sister services, were then and still are up to whatever challenges we must face in whatever machines we are given to do it with. That is what the swagger is all about. Want some of this, come to Daddy! I stick to what I have said earlier that everybody is a winner that participates in Red Flag and a hard-nosed, straight-shooting evaluation of your forces (people and hardware) is the best part of that participation. I hope the IAF choses to come back. -
All of us spend time in our sequened kneepads doing quality begging from the Commander in Chief for funding for our righteous projects. Dave, it appears you are more effective than most. Good job!

A hand salute to my nation's flag and for my nation's anthem, in my opinion, should be reserved for those who wear the uniform. I am perfectly happy to render my flag and my national anthem, a civilian hand over the heart salute. Reason is, I am now a civilian. I do not put my hand over my heart for other nation's anthems or flags for obvious reasons. Feel quite strongly about what wearing the uniform was all about and the outward signs of special patriotism and elite membership that the military salute represents. I have passed the torch and, thereby, passed my right to those who wear the uniform. Just my personal thoughts. Couldn't agree more with Dave. Interservice rivalrys are for football games. The more and more our specialized forces operate in a joint manner, the more it becomes necessary to trust the team next to you to cover your six. I'm AF, but I got the back of my USN, USA, and USMC bretheren. Having said that, it is important to remember that it is much more fun and socially acceptable (within limits) to dog-cuss your buddies than to treat outsiders in the same manner. Your buddies know you're kidding, outsiders don't. There are times when we could all lighten up a little.

Welcome to CA IronMike. Great place to share your war stories. You have to provide your own bar to hold up and libations, but I can already see your hands moving in the air. -
VFA-14 Tophatters(real world) looking to "sponsor" a squadron
Jug replied to Steamer's topic in Virtual Squadron Chat
Steamer, welcome to CA. Very generous and wonderful offer to the large and growing crowd here. There are some really talented modders here that can do anything in the Third Wire Sims. Without speaking for them, I bet they can come up with an E Superbug with your name on it. Really good to have a real driver from such a famous squadron aboard. As Viper has said, "....you still need somebody, I'll fly with you." -
OK, wife, all those things I have been putting off for my Man Room are back on the priority list. Nice pits, guys!!
-
That is kind of like saying to your crewchief, the jet 'es broke! You will find wonderful, and for the most part, patient assistance here on these CA forums, but you need to help yourself a little with some more specifics. What game? What aircraft? What external load? What conditions (altitude, etc.)? Give a little and get a lot.

Got some badly needed inspiration and focus tonite.....wound up Top Gun on a 65" Plasma in HD DVD with surround sound fluttering the curtains and foo-fooing my hair. Gotta say the Navy boys put on a great show and that film is ripe for a revisit anytime. So what is the latest thing that has wound you up about jumping in our Sim, moving around some dirt in a violent manner, and trashing a MiG or two lately????

Sejam ben vindo, aqui, amigo. O Senhor tem que olhar nas filas chamada "Campaigns" onde esta' un campainha "Operation Tainted Cigar". Poderia voar os MiGs no lado dos Cubanos e atirar os Americanos imperialistos porcos.

Could be that the people behind the assination are the classified part. Oswald was an arrow that someone pointed. What if the part that is classified brings to light positive proof that the Russians planned, financed, trained, and, otherwise, setup Oswald. America would have demanded satisfaction and we would have had WWIII. Oswald as the lone shooter and any consipiracy theory surrounding co-conspirators/other shooters are may be just incidental to the real story. Try this one. Could be that the case for Soviet involvement is what Gorbachev heard in a briefing here when he was deciding which way to go in the late 80's or early 90's. Kennedy remains a popular figure and reaction to his demise at the hands of the Godless Communists would be almost as fierce as if had been announced immediately following the assination. We just told him there could be no retribution required of an overturned government. Another cog in the wheel that brought down the evil empire.

Yea, that overtrust thing usually leaves you sitting on your bottom............................Sorry, just couldn't resist. -
Environmentalists do it all the time. If active, evil conspiracies are what makes your life worthwhile, no amount of scientific or factual proof is going to sway you.
