  1. CH-47F

The Boeing CH-47F Chinook fondly referred to as ‘The Hook’ by US military personnel, stands today as the premier multi-mission rotary wing aircraft in use with the US Army, US Army Reserve, National Guard and 20 other nations including Canada, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Japan, Italy, Greece, Spain, South Korea, Australia, Türkiye, India and the United Arab Emirates. Embodying a unique tandem rotor design this massive helicopter excels in all its roles, including cargo and troop transportation, sling load operations, search and rescue, casualty evacuation, special operations, and humanitarian assistance in disaster scenarios.

Engineered for exceptional stability and control, the CH-47F twin engine, tandem rotor configuration ensures maximum agility and facilitates straightforward loading and unloading procedures. This design uniquely positions the CH-47F for operation in environments inaccessible to others. The absence of tail rotor interference permits rear ramp access on varied terrains, including unprepared or mountainous locations, capitalising on its remarkable landing capability. Furthermore, the aircraft's design facilitates high-altitude flight up to 20,000 feet, surpassing other helicopters in its weight category.

The CH-47F is equipped with a state-of-the-art, fully integrated digital cockpit management system; the Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) Cockpit, in synergy with a Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS). These advanced systems enhance cargo-handling efficiency while significantly boosting mission performance and all weather situational awareness. CH-47F also offers side and rear door gunner positions, a radar warning receiver with chaff and flare dispensers for auto protection.

With the capability to cover extensive distances swiftly, the CH-47F can be outfitted with extended range fuel tanks and is compatible with air-to-air refuelling, thus extending its operational range further than ever before. This capability underscores the aircraft’s adaptability and endurance, making it a formidable asset in any fleet.

In total some 1'200 plus CH-47 helicopters of all variants were delivered. This icon of a war machine saw combat service in all the major theatres since its inception, notably Vietnam, Iran, Libya, The Falklands, The Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Capabilities of the CH-47F

    • Tandem Rotor Design:
      • The CH-47F features a distinctive tandem rotor system with two counter-rotating rotors. This design provides exceptional handling qualities and allows for a large lift capacity, which is crucial for carrying heavy payloads. The absence of a tail rotor also enhances safety in confined areas and simplifies maintenance, offering unhindered rear cargo and troop loading in addition to side door access.
    • Powerful Performance:
      • Powered by two Honeywell T55-GA-714A engines, the CH-47F offers impressive power and performance. These engines deliver up to 4,868-shaft-horsepower combined, enabling the aircraft to reach speeds over 175 mph (282 km/h) with a payload of more than 21,000 pounds (9,500kg).
    • Cargo Handling and Versatility:
      • The CH-47F's large cargo hold can accommodate a wide variety of loads, from standard palletized goods to vehicles and artillery, as well as the fuel cells for “Fat Cow” operations. Its rear-loading ramp and three external cargo hooks provide multiple options for loading and unloading, facilitating efficient logistics operations under diverse conditions.
    • Advanced Avionics and Systems:
      • The “glass-cockpit” of the CH-47F is equipped with advanced avionics, including a Rockwell Collins Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) cockpit, BAE Systems' Digital Advanced Flight Control System (DAFCS), night vision-compatible displays, and modern navigation systems. These enhancements improve situational awareness and flight safety, particularly in challenging environments.
    • Crew Capacity and Configuration:
      • Typically operated by a crew of three (two pilots and a flight engineer), the CH-47F can also carry up to 3 gunners.
    • Enhanced Survivability:
      • Advanced countermeasures suite, which includes radar warning receivers and infrared countermeasures. Its rugged airframe and systems redundancy are designed to withstand significant damage.

The CH-47F is an essential component of any military or humanitarian fleet, capable of performing in the most demanding situations. Its enduring design and continual updates ensure that it will remain a key player in aviation for years to come.

  2. To complete these missions from the game side involves taking out a random number of Air defence sites AAA/radar/SAM (more like DEAD).

If you dont have easymode where you can see what are primary targets - then taking out guns near the target waypoint will usually work.

To see guns without aids - really difficult with default effects - go through the ground targets (E) untill you get a gun and padlock it.

Some of the modded effects mean you can see the tracer and flashes easier to can hit them

Strafe with guns and rockets needs practise - pull out before you get to close basically and never over fly a gun site. If you can learn to remember where the gun site is climb say 9000 ft above, dive down and ripple rockets or bombs.

  3. 23-12A is the recent Yefim designation for the original MLA and only shows Cuba as getting those from the early 1980s.

They arrived in Angola in 84...............The recent MiG Diaries written by former Cuban MiG-23ML/A pilot and a SAAF pilot is by far the best book on the Angolan air war - but they only refer to the 23 being an ML which doesnt help.

There were two new build MLA varients i23-19B (MLAE) for Syria/Libya that had a mix of avionics, and i23-22A (MLAE-2) for Bulgaria which was an MLA airframe with Russian MLD avionics. Both are called export MLDs in other sources.

All Russian P/ML/MLA airframes were supposedly converted and upgraded into the dogtooth MLDs from the mid 80s.

So it's all correct? I play MSFS and there the speed indicator moves both kts and Mach, the latter doesn't in TMF Tomcat.

In Heatblur F-14 for MSFS the Mach needle moves as soon as reached Mach 1, this one stays still and have no idea how fast i'm going.

Not all correct - I have not read it properly.  The IAS looks good but the other dial for Mach is not on there (as said above) and it is supposed to be. More surprised that was left off.

    • Thanks 1

  5. You might be a few decades late for TMF

The actual F-14A NATOPS from which they probably moddelled it on tells me the airspeed dial goes from 80 to 850 knots Indicated. So as you can see in your the sceen shot the needle is on 850 kts so that looks correct.

M2.23 at 29,000 ft msl at standard day is ~M1030KCAS or ~1320KTAS

I think the real Timcat was limited to 800KIAS under 30,000ft so that might have been an overspeed.

Speed must have been displayed elsewhere - the HUD or the CRT display but not familiar really with F-14s.

    Joe Baugher's serial number lists

Joseph F. Baugher passed away on the 12th of November 2023, at the age of 82. He left for the "Eternal Airfields" as we sometimes like to say. As mentioned before I too never got around to thank him for his outstanding work, which I now regret. These pages are both meant to keep Joe's legacy alive, and to keep his work available for all to enjoy.

In no way will I ever take any credit for Joe Baugher's work and dedication. I do not mean to infringe on any copyrights. I'm just a fellow enthusiast who believes in keeping the legacy alive, and not letting Joe's work fade away. I will therefore attempt to keep maintaining the lists.

From what I can tell, Joe did his last edits to the serial number lists in October of 2023. All changes after that are done by me.

I know Joe received a lot of contributions from other enthusiasts, all eager to make the lists as correct, elaborate and up-to-date as possible. Joe assessed all new data and incorporated it into his website if he found it worthwhile. I will happily do the same, please send your contributions to lists@crouze.com if you want to help.

The lists will remain in the "basic" form as they were when Joe made them. But I have made changes to the look-and-feel, to hopefully make the pages a little more easy to access, and more straightforward to maintain.

Someone it seems might be looking to keep updating the serial nos.

The September/October issue of PC Pilot magazine contains a surprise-studded interview with MicroProse CEO, David Lagettie. Amongst other things, David discloses that Falcon 5.0 is in the planning stage, will “support many aircraft on release, including the F-35”, and won’t wrinkle its radome at*

  10. 1 Yes

    2. You only purchase the modules you want to fly. All the ED AI planes are included I think. Example I never bought the FW-190D but can put it in missions and campaigns for AI use.

    3. Further purchases of single player campaigns, Maps (e.g. Normandy), and probably the WWII asset pack will be needed.

There is no historical accuracy in the base game especially with WWII it is mostly a sandbox. WWII is very minor in DCS but there is one good multiplayer (4YA) server at least that do that if you like that sort of thing. There are some good single player campaigns for specific aircraft you can buy. It will be limited to the available maps and very small planeset.

The F-15E, developed in the mid 1980's, is a dual-role fighter designed to perform air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. An array of avionics and electronics systems give the F-15E the capability to fight at low or high altitude, day or night, and in all weather. The F-15E is the USAF's premier strike fighter still in use today.

The F-15E delivered fighter aircrew several first-time capabilities. Its APG-70 radar, based on the very capable APG-63 from the F-15A-D, boasted a synthetic mapping capability that literally created pictures of the target based solely on radar imaging. A self-contained, networked electronic warfare suite gave the aircraft self-protection capabilities. Bringing this all together and placing battlespace information at the hands of the crew, a sophisticated, air-to-ground with an ergonomic cockpit layout that was developed to take full advantage of the latest technology and advances in such areas with Multi-Purpose Displays. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/shop/modules/f-15e/
