Carrier landings in SF2 Atlantic
Boresight replied to Leviathan1000's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Hello Caesar, Thank you for your advices. Even today after almost 20 years playing jet sims, featuring the F-16; F-22; Sukhois; MiGs; EF-2000s; etc, the F-14 still is one of my few favorites to fly and know more. Unfortunately I wasn't able to acquire the famous " Fleet Defender " here at Portugal, when it came out decades ago. However my first F-14 "sim" contact was with the: " TOPGUN: Fire at Will ", and although not with the same complexity/feature representation as Fleet Defender, it managed to catch my interest in the Tomcat and general naval aviation. Then, last year SF2 : NA caught my attention to the Strike Fighters series again, and the " TMF F-14 Super Pack " got me to know this site! -

Thank you for your attention and advice Fallenphoenix. For much I like the F-14 and other birds, there's a lot of things I don't know - like the fact that Navy birds do not flare on landing. About the 150 knots final approach being a little high, I believe you're totally right, however like you mentioned, because the default model even with a "light" aircraft configuration the flight path marker starts to go out of the HUD, and you know the rest... The excessive 150 knots speed also makes me laugh when I remember playing: " TOPGUN: Fire at Will " for PC many years ago, because with all my ingenuity at those times I was landing at 170 knots speeds !!! If trying to land near the 200 knots speeds, the game featured the sound of snaping wires ! -

Hello Macelena, You've choosen your words well, when you say you're more used to the Phantom. And I understand you, because there's really something different in the way it glides through the air, comparing with the Tomcat. I don't know for sure, but on the final aproach to the carrier, the Phantom seems more stable, less prone to oscilating and changes of flight path, something like that. However, the first 2 or 3 times I landed a Phantomon on the carrier, it really felt highly awkward, because one get's no HUD ( combiner glass? ), symbolgy whatsoever besides the gunsight reticle. ( But all things compared I do still prefer the Tomcat, because of the instrumentation aid. ) Besides the airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, AoA gauges, etc does one get anyother devices/indicators to help? -
Carrier landings in SF2 Atlantic

Hello Leviathan1000, Landing on a carrier (even in computer sims), does take some skill, basic procedures knowledge and a lot of repeating. Indeed, as you mention, the basic F-14 versions available at the stock game might miss some helpful symbols and the carrier ‘fresnels’ would also be of help if they existed. But with SF 2 : NA, things are not so bad. (On other SF 2 series, I believe the F-4 Phantom II (your favourite) would give you an “headache” to land on carrier, because it has almost no 'HUD' symbology at all.) I believe that to be more successful, you must: 1 – remember when landing, the flight path marker symbol (# 1 at picture), (velocity vector, call it what you want), tells you roughly where the aircraft will touch on the carrier; 2 – keep in mind that, you must correctly follow the last waypoints before the carrier, and you must select the HUD’s “caged mode”, otherwise the flight path marker won’t show up on the HUD; 3 – try to aim the flight path marker to the beginning/mid section of the carrier’s “runway”, and slightly to right to counter the offset between the runway and the carrier movement; 4 – the aircraft waterline symbol (# 2 at picture), which tells where the nose of the aircraft is pointed, should be roughly around 5 degrees at the pitch ladder; 5 – you may pull back on the stick to give the above mentioned 5 (or 10) degrees pitch, just 1 or 2 seconds before touching the runway, so your sink rate won’t be so high; 6 – remember that: the aircraft waterline symbol only tells you where the aircraft’s nose is pointed, and NOT where he’s going (again that’s what the flight path marker does); 7 - not let the airspeed get much bellow 150 Knots, because you will loose sight of the flight path marker – which is crucial to know where your aircraft is going. Practice these procedures often (don’t fly all the time by the ILS needles, try to fly the flight path marker instead) and I believe you’ll improve your carrier landings. Anyone, feel free to correct anything. Thank you. -
Can I help the site providing saved downloads screenshots?

Hello everyone, First excuse my english or any lack of utility on my question, but I'm somewhat newbie and not the most "tech savvy" guy. So, in order to help "building" the site again from it's past "crash", I inform that I do have a few HTML and MHTML file formats saved on my desktop PC, regarding aircraft and/or avionics downloads (with the respective item description and screenshots). From this topic I bellieve Erik was trying to recover various screenshots and other things: http://combatace.com/topic/78876-downloadsuploads-still-offline/page-2 I would appreciate to contribute in anyway, as this site and its people have also given me a lot. Everyone, feel free to tell if I could be of any help. Thank you. -

Yes, unfortunately only the small thumbnails are available, as that's what get's saved on a normal save page format. Ok then, anything else you might need, just ask. Best regards, Pedro -

I'll leave another page print of the saved files, to show where the screenshots come from. It's 2:45 here at Portugal, I'll be here again tomorrow. Best regards, Pedro -
Can I help the site providing saved downloads screenshots?
Boresight replied to Boresight's topic in Site Support / Bug Reports / Suggestions
Hello. I understand, my saved files are essentially about Strike Fighters 2 downloaded aircraft / avionics packs, and I bellieve they have at least one screenshot each. (Don't know if the pic's quality is very good though). Ok, as I'm not allowed to upload files bigger than 1 MB (and my save files are bigger), I will try to upload only the screenshots with the respective file's title. 1 - Kfir C-10 Strike Fighters 2 (Submitter: denissoliveira) 2 - Banidos-Team Mirage IIIEA Fuerza Aérea Argentina (Submitter: torno) 3 - MiG-31M & BM Foxhound SF2 (Submitter: Brain32) Let me know if they're somewhat useful. -
Hello again everyone, I would appreciate your help if anyone could tell me, how does one get the Matra R-530R missile to appear at the: SF 2 Israel add-on aircraft - Mirage III EBR loadout screen (in game). http://combatace.com/files/file/12490-f-103-mirage-iiiebr-version-101/ I've already seen the R-530R missile's name at the respective pylon in the Mirage III EBR's loadout file. However it doesn't appear at the armament list on the in game loadout screen. Thank you all for your attention.

How to get Matra R-530R to appear on Mirage III EBR ?
Boresight replied to Boresight's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Thank you a lot for your attention Todd, I do still a noob in the art of mods, and I do see a lot of codes... however problem was solved right now: - solved it by installing the main version Mirage III E add-on: http://combatace.com/files/file/11394-mirage-iiie-for-sf2/ It's called "upgrade for the Mirage Factory Mirage III E", however without this aircraft, the Brazilian Mirage III didn't have acess to the Matra R-530R, neither to the pilot ejection seat... Neither of them had afterburner flame, which I managed to get, by editing the respective aircraft DATA file, and renaming the afterburner with the "Banidos Mirage III EA" DATA file code, (the argentine version). Thank you anyway ! -

DCS MiG-21bis has met its funding goal!

Well, I know this is some dig up of this thread, but I find very interesting. About LOMAC (IIRC), played first time some 10 years ago or so. Only single-player and only with patch 1.01 I believe.. Regarding the pro Russian/Eastern equipments bias, it might be so in some aspects, however there were others not so. - F-15 radar frequently lost lock. True. - Trying to get on Mirage 2000 C's six o-clock, (to down it with guns) from my MiG-29 - VERY difficult. Not being any kind of moder; developer; artist; etc. just an enthusiast, I trully believe either the M 2000 C, or the MiG-29 flight models were not much "acurate". I mean, sometimes it even appeared easier to follow the Mirage's closed turns with the heavier Su-27, than with the MiG-29... The Mirage's FM might be a little bit "steped up" maybe, however the MiG-29 appeared to lose speed and nose pitching authority easier than the Su-27. Why I left LOMAC: - Above mentioned, and even with the AI pilots agressivness / iniciative there were discrepancies - while the M 2000 C AI pilots did agile fast maneuvers, the F-16's ones were somewhat lazy considering they were flying an F-16. Anyone feel free to comment. Thank you. -

Hello again, I'm amazed as in SF2 NA, one's aircraft can keep develop increasing damage, much after being hit ! That's right, I thought that kind of features were only in BMS Falcon and the alikes. Summarizing: There I was at SF2 NA, flying "created missions", F-14A vs F-15A Baaz 'guns only': - ( ok it wasn't 'guns only' from my part ); - before taking all of the Eagle's one managed to hit my right side wing and some of the adjacent fuselage with guns - many dark grey bullet holes were visible; - by luck my Tomcat's engines kept working at 100 %, and I didn't see anyother systems damaged; - also didn't look much for warnign lights inside the cockpit at that time; - however, aprox. 5 or 6 minutes after the fight's ended, I was RTB above angels 30 and about Mach 2.3, (full afterburner long time) then: - small fire (not smoke) trails erupted out of each engine's exaust; - few seconds after, a big fire started from the all back fuselage. That's when I realised, me, my RIO & my "30 million dollar" Tomcat were doomed. I've cut off the engines ( CTRL + I ) as fast as I could, pitched the jet upwards, supposedly at high altitude there's less oxigen, but no avail, that's when some explosions begun to desintegrate all of us.. too late to eject. Liked a lot to see this featured in game though - give's it more the simulator character. PS - I've choosen that angles on pics, so you could see there's no one behind me - though not the best to see the rear fuselage fire. Were the most of you aware of this kind of features? Thank you. -

Hello everyone, First, congratulations to all the people who makes it possible to replicate the outstanding jet fighters in SF series! However, although I've managed in the past to download and apply some TMF F-14 material from here - many thanks, I'm a very noob fan about packs/patches/releases/mods/add-ons, etc. So, I would like if anyone could clarify me: Does any of the MiG-29 mods available here at Combat Ace do allow the use of Helmet Mounted Sight and R-73 missiles? A sincere thanks to you all. -

Ok, so it isn't possible, unless it wolud came form the developers. Maybe in a future product release, who knows. Thank you. -

You're absolutely right - it happened again, this time without my aircraft being hit by anything. I really was flying on afterbuners for long time (still, cheking the fuel), proceding to get in range for an AIM-54 shot. In the " TMF Tomcat ", a warning ligth appeared indeed on the cockpit " reduce speed ". And at the HSD's left side, there's some bar indicators which I bellieve are; RPM; Turbine Inlet Temperature; Fuel Flow... at least they were in the Spectrum Holobyte's " TOPGUN: Fire at Will ! " I don't remember right now if the turb. inlet temp. bars are showing criticaly high on this case, (probabily they do). I'm really enjoying this sim! -

Hello again, I bellieve it's not necessary to open a new thread, being this the same issue, I will post my question here: Could you, appraised and respected moders people, just give me a small idea of the possibility / amount of work it would take to - produce a working Helmet Mounted Sight to MiG-29; or Su-27; etc. on SF 2 ? Feel free to speak your mind. Thank you. -

Thank you Fubar. Yes, I fully understand it, and to me, that all tranlates to a more real kind of sim. Although in my case, I was at high altitude, I really was at a very high speed. Also the engine might have been hit. -

What do you mean by "stress limit on the engine"? What kind of stress? Do I reach it by keeping some time at top speed? Full throtle? -

Ok, I'm glad these features do exist. How can I tell the airframe is weaker? By geting the wings ripped in some high G maneuver? What were you flying btw? Haha! Trying to hit mach 3.. LOL ok I give you that must have been fun ! ( Although the F-14 isn't capable of it, neither the F-15 Eagle is.) Yes, the engine overheat is also another possibility. -

Precisely the same feeling - everything appears to be "stable", and than the damage sustained pop's in ! I even tryed to deploy the speedbrakes after pitching the aircraft up, to loose speed and get less structural forces acting on aircraft or something, but that's when the explosions started... and you know the rest. -
Hello again everyone, For the first time, I'm trying to use the "Banidos Mirage IIIEA" add-on with SF2 Israel, after careful reading the Migbuster guide, and several topics at the knowledge base. However the hangar/loadout screen appears somewhat transparent; the loading mission screen appears ok; the cockpit appears miss-aligned; and the skin/decals don't appear at all.. though the loadout and afterburners show up. I'm tired of tweaking with it with no avail. Would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Thank you Logan4, Well, since I have never done a clean and proper install before of more than 1 SF version, several files must have been corrupted or missing. I understand, thank you for your time. Best regards! -
