  1. WW2 Cannons

Skippy, if I remember right the 50s were mounted in the turret so that the crew could get a kill from it's targets blind spot. Also the 50s had a higher rate of fire than the 20mm's. That said it seems that the American built HS.404s were not as reliable as the British built ones. Found this on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispano-Suiza_HS.404 Most things there are suspect but this seems legit. As for the German's 30mm, true their birds were more heavily armed but the rate of fire was painfully slow, added to that was a heavy shell that, according to articles and books I have read, needed the nose of the plane pitched up slightly in order to "loft" the shells into a target. Firing whrere the aim point was useless as the round would drop below it's intended victim.
  2. Having spent all but 3 of my twenty years in the Navy as an Aviation Ordnanceman it drives me up the wall to see a post using the wrong terms and phrases dealing with weapons. Having said that I am starting a list of terminology, acronyms and other big words used in the ordnance field. If you are an AO, USMC 6531 Ordnance, AF Ammo or Army whatever, feel free to add. If you are not in the Ordnance field just read and don't post, the Ordnance Mafia knows who is who. Stores - anything carried internally (bomb bay) or externally on an aircraft. Drop tanks are considered stores but do not have an offensive use ( unless it lands in your backyard) More to follow... Kill stores- any type or class of weapon that is used with hostile intent. Search stores- Primarily air launched flares but also includes air launched Sono-bouys, , Practice Depth Charges or externally mounted search lights. Store station- any point on an airframe that a store can be carried, this includes pylons, wing tip rails and missile mounts on the fuselage Pylon- a station that is mounted on the wing or fuselage to carry stores Class- a family of weapons either by type or weight as in Mk 82 class weapon, the Mk 82 bomb body is the basis of many weapons ie: Snakeye, AGM-123 Skipper and Mk 36 DST mine. Mk- Pronounced "mark" not "em-kay" it denotes in this case a series or family or ordnance (saying em-kay usually makes an Ordie want to choke the living s**t out of the offender) Pyro- Pyrotechnics_ flares, chaff, smoke markers, CADs, anything that is used to mark (designate) or illuminate a target, decoy/spoof tracking systems or missiles, eject or release stores. PGM- Precision Guided Munition, Laser Guided Bomb, JADAM, JSOW Unguided/Dumb munitions- Rockets, general purpose bombs, napalm. Weapons that rely on the pilots skill to place stores on target. Usually refered to as 'Kentucky Windage" . To get accurate spend lots of time on the range. Area Effect Munitions- Cluster bombs, napalm, white phosphorous, weapons that cover a wide area of engagement. Note: these are not accurate but are able to spread their effect in order to achieve maximum damage. The store designated "Lazy Dog" is a canister of "nails" that uses gravity and it's carrying aircraft's speed to achieve lethal velocity, the nails are non-explosive. FAE- Fuel Air Explosive, a weapon that uses the blast from a cloud of fuel to make a kill by overpressure, usually amplifying the normal air pressure by a factor of at least 10. Early FAEs used Ethylene-Oxide as it's explosive component. Blue Death- a training round, painted blue for use on a range. Note: although it is classified as inert the body of the store can incorporate a marker can make the weapon harmful to anyone that fails to follow proper procedures. Historical Note: Blue Death was used in an offensive capacity in the period between the two conflicts with Iran, the bomb bodies were fitted with Laser seekers and used against soft targets placed next to schools, houses, or hospitals. you can take out a radar site by dropping a 500lb rock on it. Thats all for now, Ordies/Ammo Troops please add as you like or PM me for corrections. Last one- IYAOYAS- If You Ain't Ordnance, You Ain't Sh**!!!
  3. In Aviation Ordnance there is only one department, the MEN'S department! I knew one of you guys would make a post like this.
  4. New US Stealth Transport Troop Helicopter?

Based on what my friends and myself know about the 60 in my opinion the drawings look plausible. The two gripes I have with the drawings is that the tail rotor is on the wrong side of the tail and the main rotor is shown in the wrong direction of rotation. As for the "stealth fairings" over the exhausts, these are known as HIRSS or Helicopter Infra-Red Suppression System, they are to negate the bird IR signature, I suppose that some suppression of engine noise is possible but not likely. The rotor blade tips are angled to delay the shock wave of the blade tips, believe me, even an unstealthed 60 can be on you before you know it if the approach is made at low-level and high speed. There was a lot of conjecture and speculation among my former squadron mates regarding the bird, and we are talking a lot of man-year experience in this select group. My money in on a conventional airframe with a highly modified rotor system and judicious application of radar absorbent materials. Remember they can't be that stealthy, a Pakistani computer geek outed them on Twitter
  5. Mk20 shreds 'em, Napalm cooks 'em, 20mm turns them into bite size pieces. BBQ,mmmmmmmmmmmm! Seriously, your load out for a CAS mission should be a mix of 2.75" FFAR, Mk 82_either Snakeye or fuze extender_ Mk 20 Rockeye and 20mm for those just in case targets. Since you did not state your bird are we to assume that it is an F-4? For CAS I use one of 4 airframes depending on my mood and level of pissed off at the word I happen to be in, my first choice is the B-57B, second is the A-26K, both birds have bomb bays and lot's of external stations to hang ordnance from, last two are the SPAD (A-1H for you kids) and the OV-10, the Spad is like a flying bomb truck lots of store stations and 4, count them 4, Colt Mk 12 20mm cannon. My advice is to look at your mission brief and take a good mix on your bird, fast movers are not that effective for two reasons, 1- stores load, you can't put as much ordnance on a Phantom that you can on a Spad or Invader and 2- speed, you are moving in and out of your engagement area to quickly to have any semblance of accuracy. The birds I listed are fast enough to get to your target, carry a good mix of ordnance and can slow down to put rounds on target. If you really want a challenge come talk to me after you do a CAS in a UH-1B with 14 2.75" HE/FRAG FFAR and 2 GAU-2B/A mini-guns ( M134 for the non Ordnance folk).
  6. 2011 Worldwide Threat Levels

ALERTS TO THREATS IN 2011 EUROPE & ELSEWHERE : BY JOHN CLEESE The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability. The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Libya and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada. The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides." The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose." Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels. The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy. Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level. -- John Cleese - British writer, actor and tall person

  8. How about making a sticky regarding the B-1 and B-2 so the board is not spammed at least twice a week with the same question? It's worth a shot but I guess the sticky will be as ignored as the search engine. And yes I did not have my afternoon double Scotch, single malt/neat, which is why I'm cranky.
  9. Sticky Suggestion

I'm not bothered, just surprised that it's taken almost 8 years to get a negative rating, I think it's a twisted badge of honor in a way. Now that I've said that, anymore of these and I'll release the Ordnance Mafia on the the little SOB.
  10. If that is the case try to do an install of the game in another location, like an external drive, a large capacity thumb drive or a partition and then either not patch that install or use just the first patch if it's even available anymore. If I recall OTC came out around the time of the first patch.
  11. Sounds like you need to add power to the mix, remember with your gear, flaps, and hook down along with maybe your speed brakes your airspeed and performance is going to go right into "coffin corner", you'll need to be on your throttle constantly. If you have ever heard a real carrier landing the engines are constantly spooling up and down to keep from stalling out and going into the water or worse into the round down or fantail. Try this, let the auto pilot take you in a couple of times, you can always override it if you need to, but watch the power settings speed and when the plane starts going dirty. After a few times you should get the hang of it.
  12. shrapnel, anyone?

My grandfather was a mechanic from the late 20's till his retirement in 1965. He was always pulling bits of metal out of his fingers up to his forearms, seems that shavings from lathes and grinders as well as the chisel pieces embedded themselves rather deep over the years. most of the were encapsulated in scar tissue and the small ones would work their way to the surface from time to time. Never seemed to bother him much. He lived till he was 82 and always joked about the things that he would pull out of his arms.

Not too much aviation but Dr. Strangelove. Slim Pickens riding that H-bomb at the end, classic!

I'm am not directing my comments to anyone whose language of origin in not English, it is not an easy one to master considering how many words are "loan" words from other tongues. Who my remarks are aimed at are the English speakers who by their posting are proud of their illiteracy, they display it well, it is obvious by the construction of a sentence whether the poster is accustomed to writing in English, the line from Firefox comes to mind "think Russian", an English writer will use certain words and phrases that are unique to the location and dialect. I mean no offense to those who do not speak English as their primary means of communication, I am more upset with the kids who go to school and know better. And thank you to whoever gave me my very first negative rating on a post. You must have been one of the ones I targeted. BTW, the Mods can lock this I have had my say, my fun and I did get my apologies to those that deserved it. Everyone else, don't you have home work to do?
  15. There have been two topics on adding sounds for certain events, ie; popping Chaff/Flares and Jetting external stores. It has been pointed out by those much talented and probably more even tempered than me that the sounds are coded to a specific event and those two were not coded. I am all for a realistic experience, however, as an Aviation Ordnanceman with 20 years of working on different US Navy platforms let me share this knowledge with you all. 1 Jettisoning stores / releasing weapons- Having done countless Jett checks from inside and out of an aircraft the sound you think you want to put into the game is not the sound that I or any AO or Aircrew would hear. How we would do a check would depend on the rack, if it was in a P-3 the releases were done by solenoid so those were cocked by hand and then tripped in the cockpit, what we would hear would be a rapid series of very loud thuds, like the sound of a cars rear hatch being released by the remote only louder. We would also feel them releasing too. If the racks were CADed as on the A-6, F/A-18, actually most tactical aircraft, we would just do the release and control checks through a test set. To actually fire a CAD on the flight line is a bad thing that will get you DE-CERTED and end your career as an Ordnanceman in a New York minute. The pilots I have talked to stated that the only way they new a store was released was by a shift or change in the aircraft's weight, the would feel it as opposed to hearing it. Look a pilot is sitting at least five or six feet ahead of the racks, the engine is running, he has a helmet on, sometimes has earplugs in his ears. The comms are going off in his headset and there is the wind noise outside, you think that a cartridge about a quarter to half the size of a 12 gauge shot shell is going to be heard in that environment? Not likely. As to a P-3, I have been on a Torpedo Exercise a long time ago as well as a MINE-EX, I never heard the racks release, but I sure felt them, I have heard the CADs that launched the Sonobouys fire off but I was standing right next to the launcher. Sounded like a nail gun from a couple of houses over. 2 Popping Chaff and Flares- The cartridges that deploy counter measures are smaller than the CADs on the bomb racks and the dispensers are placed somewhere inconvenient for the Ordies to load, most of the time on the belly behind the intakes (F/A-18) under the tail between the exhausts (A-6) or on top, in the tail or somewhere else the engineers can think of sticking them to make our lives more difficult, but I digress. The point is that you can't hear them go off, if you do it means your engine is off and you are not moving. Even when I was riding hH-60H's we could never hear the ALE-39 fire, it is on the tail boom in blister looking things, you have rotor noise, you are wearing a helmet and ear plugs and the ICS is constantly active. Add gunfire and other noise, well you get the picture. The point of all this, and I do have a point, is this, don't worry about adding a sound that you would not normally hear in real life. You want to play with sound? find or make a good WAV file for the smaller helicopters, the Allouette and Gazelle use a generic file, the engine produces a higher pitch that is a louder screech than whine, and H-6 series is a unique sound of itself. Make a file for those and the helo guys would be grateful. Okay enough of my ranting for today.
  16. Dear Citizens of America

I work at a Medical Center that is also a training facility and we get Doctors from all over the world as well as a few nurses. It never fails that every year one of our residents will use the wrong idiom or totally misunderstand what was said. My normal smart ass reply is " don't worry Doc, we know you understand English, you just have to learn American. Watching a doctor from Europe trying to talk to a Mexican patient through an interpreter is just painful. It's like a New Yorker talking to someone from Alabama through a Texan, each one is looking at the other like WTF?

One more thing, would it be too hard to use proper grammar, composition and if nothing else, spell check? This is a forum board where most of the senior members have an education above the sixth grade level, this is not a chat box or IM program. I am at the point that my impression of some members here, based on their posts went to school with Jethro Bodine, google it, how one expresses one's self sets the tone of any responses you will receive. It is "you" not "u" and "you're" not "ur". Speak either the Queens English or the Yank equivalent, don't make us look more backward than we are. Time for a double Glenlivet, who's with me?

  19. You gun pod is going to fire 90% of the time when you pull the trigger on your joystick, in my case button #1 on my X-52. You may have to cycle through your A2G weapons until the pod is selected. Try loading up just the pod and hitting the range, try different button configurations until it works the way you want it to. In my experience the pods have always fired when I pulled the trigger, I've never needed to set up a secondary gun group.

  21. Is this bird compatible with the first gen games? I notice that the core files are from A-Team and those helos work in the first gens.
  22. HH-60J Jayhawk

As an alumni of HCS-5 I thank you sir, it looks as good as I remember the last time I saw any of our birds. One of the Airframers I am still in touch with made all the West Coast Choppers Maltese crosses while they were in the desert, the crosses had a different phrase and overlay for each bird. Scurvy will be happy to know that his "art" is now immortalized in a game. Once again I thank you.
  23. Never have been too keen on flying a campaign so this time around I set a goal of 25 missions or Rank of 0-5 all to be flown in one airframe. For SPF1 and WoI it's the HH-60F in in Timor and Afgahnistan flying anti-ship and armed recce and and in WoV it's the UH-1B HA(L)-3 Seawolves doing armed recce, CAS and once in a while a strike. Even with both threats set to "light" it has not been easy in a helo. In A2A the only thing in a Huey you can do is fly low, do sudden direction and altitude changes and hope the NVAF pilot overshoots and hits the ground it has happened a few times. Also I use a doctrine form HAL-5 turn head on 2 seconds of mini-gun and punch a couple of 2.72" rockets, sometimes I get lucky and get a kill. In the 60 I just turn on the jammers, pop the ALE-39's and turn into the attack. If I stay low enough or lurk in the hills the bad guys will have a "controlled impact into terrain". I don't get the kill, but they don't bother me anymore either.
  24. In WoV I use the Ground and Air mod, if you fly helos in the South it's not SAM's that you have to worry about, it's small arms and .51cal ground fire. If it's just small arms I stay above 1000' and dive into my target, any bullet larger than 7.62 then I have to be constantly changing heading and altitude as well as speed to spoil the AI's aim. If you haven't done a helo mission do a CAS one. Since I fly in the South I set my enemy aircraft to "light" as well as the air defenses. Don't let that fool you I lost two pilots to 7.62mm ground fire their first flights out. Also set the year anywhere from 1968-1971, the flight to and from are painfully boring, the 15 minutes in the combat zone are...interesting.
  25. HH-60J Jayhawk

JB, I'm using the A Team Foxtrot model right now, did an ini edit so it would take Hellfire, also the M134 gunpod and rockets. At the time I was in HCS-5 the running joke between the Command Master Chief and rest of the squadron was that he was going to have my crew of crazies mount a minigun on one side and a rocket pod on the other. I never said otherwise and just let the aircrew wonder if we were serious. At the time of my retirement we were just getting Hellfire online and had not yet mounted that R2D2 looking AAQ-16 pod. I may look into getting the Gen2 games, but I'm not sure my PC could run them very well, thanks for the info and even if I can't use your bird, the Hotel should be made, the Firehawks and Redwolves ran plenty of flights during their deployments, most of which will never be public.
