Engaging Bombers
TeaAndScones posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Hi. What would be the most efficient way of engaging bombers, rear aspect with cannon fire? Yesterday, I was intercepting 6 TU-22's with F-14. (Loadout: 675 20mm, 2 SW, 6 PH.) 4 Blinders went down with the 6 PH's fired. I shot one down in a head on pass with a SW. (I assume it hit the cockpit and killed the pilot.) I engaged the final TU-22 from behind with my last SW, but it did nothing. So I just shot my 20mm at it, but it was insufficient, before I was downed by the tail gunner. So, and tactics for this type of situation? Would be appreciated. :) -
How do the IR missiles that the F-22 carries seek its target if its being carried within the weapons bay? I thought IR missile seekers have to be 'outside' so the seeker can track the heat given off by the enemy aircraft - impossible in a weapons bay. I can understand how an AMRAAM might work when being carried stealthily. (The missile seeker is slaved to the aircrafts radar, the target is pinpointed by the aircrafts radar, and the missile goes after that target.) So can someone enlighten my about how an IR Missile would work? DatBritish.

I think everyone can agree the F-22 is one of the greatest leaps in aircraft design texhnology. Combining stealth and agility and situational awareness all into one package. However, that's all very well and good, but did we need it? The F-22 was concieved through the ATF program, which was at the response of a hypothetical Russian super-fighter. (From what I've heard) Of course, this never came to be. Plus, soon after, the Soviet Union collapsed, and the threat of a new super-fighter gone with it. So the F-22 was still evaluated and built anyway. But its purpose was gone. Although Russia is now working on the PAK-FA, they're not so much a volatile country as they used to be. (They're actually quite poor relative to USA.) They're probably just working on a fighter to defend their own country with. Today, North Korea is the big worry, especially after a few days ago, after they threatened the US with force after B-52's were discovered near Korean airspace. Although N. Korea's nuclear capabilities are unquestionable, their air force is something else. It consists mainly of MIG-21's and -23's, and a few -29's. Even our F-15's and F-16's could take them. All I'm saying is, is that does the US need that firepower? Its a little bit overkill in my opinion. It's also cost the tax payer millions of dollars, for an aircraft that in the eight years its been in service, the closest its ever been to combat is escorting a TU-95 away from American Airspace. (F-4' were soing that in the 70's, I mean come on.) Not to mention, the US has had plenty of oppertunities to showcase its combat capability in many recent conflicts, such as the 2011 Libyan campaign, which brings into question why they're so shy about bringing out their big toys to play. Its probably had more use in its use in airshows and license for use in Video Games than in actual combat. In today's world, maybe it would have been more economical to produce the F-22 in smaller numbers, (If they're so good anyway, why do we need 187 of them?), and followed up with the F-35 as top priority. (If they hadn't of cocked it up so much.) Please post your opinions. :)

Most people on CombatAce are probably Flight Sim Vets. I myself am a Strike Fighters 2 Fan, which is probably my favourite flight application. Though sometimes, I find myself switching on After Burner II on my Mega Drive every once in while to satisfy that need I have to just shoot s**t out of the sky. I also play Ace Combat on occasion, mainly because of their high production values and compelling storylines. That's all very well and good, but.. There are some that are just there to jump on the AC bandwagon for a cheap buck, (Top Gun: Hard Lock comes to mind), and just abuse the 'Flight Game' name. Its also a pity that fewer 'Simulators' are being made nowadays. I feel its just the Games Industry not having the balls to put in something that could possibly present a challenge to the player, on the chance they will jsut give up, or too wimpy to say 'If you don't at least put some effort in, you're not going to see the rest of the game'. The aforementioned AB and AC I can forgive, (AB originated in Arcades, nuff said, while AC was probably the first proper Arcade sim on a console, so it was new and refreshing at the time), but then there are just cheap games attempting to get a quick buck from what they an throw at us. (Most infuriatingly, 'Janes Advanced Strike Fighters', Janes name on an arcade sim, HHNNNNNNGGG*dead*) So, what are your opinions on todays Flight Sims/Games. I'd especially like to hear from proper sim vets, like Falcon 4.0 players. :)

Its widely accepted that that the AIM-4, AIM-26, and AIM-47 all belong to the same family of missiles. (Falcon.) However, could the AIM-54 Phoenix be considered a part of this family, as both the AIM-47 and AIM-54 were designed to shoot down bombers at long range, the overall profile of the missiles are relatively similar, and Hughes both played a part in their development. (Though Raytheon played the greater part of development for the Phoenix.) Any thoughts welcome.

F-111B Dominator Radar
TeaAndScones posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Hi I've downloaded Wrench's F-111B Dominator aircraft, and I was wondering how I could mod it to get the TW F-14A's Radar to work on it, since both used the AWG-9 in real life. (By default it uses the F-4J Radar.) Thanks in advance. -
AA-11B Backfire
TeaAndScones posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Anyone play Fighters Anthology back in the day. If you did, you may remember a couple of Russian Aircraft could equip the AA-11B Backfire, a fictional variant of the AA-11 Archer that could fire backwards at tailgaiting enemies. I thought I would try my hand at modding a standard AA-11 for my own personal use. But does anyone know how to get the missile facing backwards, to start with? Any help is appreciated. :) -
To be or not to be...
TeaAndScones posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Hi fellow chaps. I'm thinking of making a skin for the stock F-14A that comes with SF2NA. (Not going to say cause if all goes well I might upload it. :) ) However, the skin is based off of a livery from Namco's 'Ace Combat' series. Would it be illegal to upload a skin based on copyrighted material? Also, would the good chaps at TW be bothered about it? Thanks for the help. -

Catalog Files

I feel like a right scrub for asking, but how do you extract/open the .cat files in the Main SF2 instalation directory? I need to find the '*_DATA.ini' files for a few aircraft. It seems everyone can do it except me. :( Thanks for the help. -
