Changing Airbase Alignment by Year
ragnarokryan posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
I'm not a modder but I thinking about dipping my toes into some basic stuff. Maybe you guys can help me out? The full-scale Israel map is fantastic, but I'm wondering if it's possible to change the country the airbases belong to depending on the year? For example, after 1967 the Israelis occupied the Sinai and would have owned Bir Gifgafa, Sharm El Sheik, etc. Then they were given back to Egypt in the "land for peace" exchange. It would be great to be able to build a mission at the start of the Yom Kippur war as two F-4's defending Sharm El Sheik from a horde of MiGs, but right now the airfield belongs to the Egyptians no matter what year it is. Thanks! -

Wrench, I love what you did to the stock terrain, but I usually only see your work there if I jump into an instant action scenario. The full-size terrain adds that extra element of fuel management. Now if only there were a way to get my wingman to break on his own when being followed by a MiG. Also a pity TK left multiplayer behind. This community could have a lot of fantastic battles with each other I think. Not entirely related to maps and modding but more of a general comment, sometimes I see folks complain about the flight models. I think TK did a great job with the flight models. Here is an example: One squadron commander in the IAF created a test to ensure the engine of the Mirage III was performing well enough to conduct surveillance flights over enemy territory. To pass the test, a Mirage at 2000' MSL at 150kts should accelerate to 600kts at full power in 45 seconds. Try it for yourself in game! You will need constant forward pressure on the stick in order to maintain 2000'. I timed it at 43 seconds. Pretty damn close. That said, the Mirage would conduct surveillance flights beginning at 75,000 ft. I haven't been able to do that yet. So maybe the flight models aren't perfect. -

Changing Airbase Alignment by Year

Ok, I'm going to read this back to make sure it makes sense. Unlike choosing an "active date range" for an aircraft (i.e. F-86s can be flown from 1950 - 1975, or whatever you put in the .ini file) an airbase can belong to one team only in a single player mission. That team is determined by the map you choose to fly in. Gepard's Suez2 and Israel2 maps are examples of that with the same airbase belonging to a different team regardless of the year. If you want an accurate single player mission experience you would need to know to choose Israel2 in 1967 and Suez2 in 1973. During a campaign it is possible to switch an airbase's team, but only once. Is that accurate? Thanks a ton, you guys really know your stuff. -
Just a general observation... How is it that SF2, modded and beautiful, runs silky smooth on my non-gaming laptop when older sims (Microsoft FSX, Falcon 4, even Jane's IAF with Tackleberry's patch while in cockpit) stutter and generally run poorly? IL-2 1946 runs great too, but it just seems that older sims don't necessarily age well on modern systems in my experience. Does this have more to do with new software/hardware working well together or does TK just know how to write a great program? And shout out to the modders here, you guys are amazing, I love the new content and graphic updates that make the sim gorgeous and fun to play. This is a great community. Ryan

CptHrki, The GPU/CPU makes sense, I only mention Jane's IAF because I thought it was a little odd. My current laptop has Windows 10 and an nvidia card to supplement an intel integrated GPU (told you it was bad) and IAF will run great in external views. Jump into the cockpit and it's maybe 1 frame every few seconds. On an older MacBook Pro running Windows 7 in Boot Camp, IAF runs great. So everything you mention makes a lot of sense. As more time passes maybe this problem will get worse. Gunrunner, no not joking, yes I am new. SF2 isn't DCS World for sure, but for an aging program on lousy hardware it's working well for me. The modded Iceland terrain with the Sarcasm sky and new aircraft: Awesome. Modded Israel terrain (with Sarcasm again) and new units and aircraft? Reminds me of the 90's when sims were having their day. Wings Over Korea? Lacks the campaign that MiG Alley had but it's gorgeous and suspends disbelief pretty well. Maybe I haven't loaded it up enough but for now I'm getting plenty of enjoyment for my few bucks. TK gave us a pretty good foundation and the rest of you in the modding community (unlike no-nothing lurkers like myself) who actually know what you are doing have polished it pretty bright. -
Virtual to Physical Aircraft Models
ragnarokryan posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Hi all, Not sure if this is the proper place, but I would like to pose a hypothetical question. Many of the in-game aircraft, and especially the modded aircraft, would make for interesting model aircraft subjects. As an example, the French Ouragan, Mystere IV, Super Mystere and Vautour are rare to the point of impossible to find in either injection mold or resin kit form. If you do find one it is outrageously priced or produced in a scale you don't want. With the advent of 3D printing, would it be possible to take aircraft built for SF2 (or any sim, really) and print them as a display model? I don't own or have access to a 3D printer, I'm just curious to know if it could be done And lastly, it should go without saying but I will say it anyway; freeware 3D objects should not be sold if they were printed unless done so by their creator, naturally. Thanks! -

Wings over Korea (1 of 3)
ragnarokryan replied to Do335's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
Hi all, I tried posting yesterday, and I am either too dumb to make comments stick, or I lost my comment. So I apologize if you've seen this before. I have a SF2 full-5 merged install with exp 1 and 2. I've installed WOK as per the instructions, and can get into the sim. I can run instant action, and single missions. The terrain looks great, I can fly any airplane.... but I can't seem to get into a campaign. Every time I hit the campaign button, the program freezes, I have to run task manager to close it out. Any ideas on why campaign is kaput on my install would be very much appreciated. Thanks!- 121 replies

Hi all, I've got a complete merged SF2 install and Wings over Korea is the only mod I've got currently. I have been able to get it to work, everything except for the campaign. Instant action works great, single missions are a blast, but when I hit the "campaign" button, freeze. Nothing works, I have to launch task manager to end the program. Any ideas why I can fly single missions and instant action but campaigning locks up my game? Any assistance at all is appreciated. Thanks!
