planning maps
Fortiesboy replied to Romflyer's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
This is very interesting Romflyer and you've obviously put a lot of thought into it. Should make your missions more immersive! It isn't relevant for me though, cos i fly in the dark!( as my CO keeps telling me! ) - I use a projector - but as the thread is about maps, and I reckon you are an expert, I wonder if you or anyone can advise me please re the map you call up as you fly. I can zoom it a bit but I can't get it to zoom OUT far enough to give me a more overall picture of the route and all waypoints. Is there a way to alter this? TIA -
WOE- basic update questions
Fortiesboy posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hello all= I am returning to Strikefighters after some years absence. I understood the sim well once, but the old brain has forgotten a lot of it. I bought WOE online and I think I need to download an Oct2008 update. On the downloads page which download is it? The one named Oct2008b? When I ran SF before I used EAWEURo 1.5 terrain mod. Is this still applicable or is it superceded? I see loads of terrain mods- I'd like the best european terrain. I see a Hi res mod to? Please suggest which to download, There is so much info mentioned in the stickys etc, but I find it a bit confusing! Also do I need a cat extractor? where to dowload and instructions how to use please? TIA -
WOE- basic update questions
Fortiesboy replied to Fortiesboy's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks a lot chaps. I'm not too bad now on the nav thing.! My big problem now is finding ground targets, on normal settings I'm Ok, more or less, but I cannot see how you can find anything on Hard settings throughout. Anyone? Am I right in thinking that you have to use the search mode in radar to see ground targets painted, and then to be able to acquire and lock them? On the ground radar I see targets apparently painted but I cannot seem to acquire them and therefore lock them? I cannot see much use for the ground radar. Am I missing something? Is the sim meant to be played at ALL hard settings, and if so, are there any tutorials anywhere? Thanks -

How can I defend against SAM's
Fortiesboy replied to agwolf's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks also from me for these replies, as i too am learning the sim and wished to beat the Sams. I have mapped the chaff and flares commands to my hotas, but when i press the buttons i get a " 0 chaff " or "0 flares" comes up- Do i have to load these before the mission? I can't see where to do that when i load the ordnance. Thanks. -

Stingray- Thanks very much for your welcome Your post is one of the nicest I have had when asking for help. I'll chase up your suggestions and see how things pan out. I do very much like terrain. Must I choose one and stick with it? If there are alternatives, ie Euro 1.5 do I need another instal onanother path-if so, I'll stick with one. Is there a tutorial on navigating etc when using Hard settings? cheers -
Just in case you are not aware, Capt, CFS3, and therefore OFF, have a peculiarity ( a welcome one ) in that the sim runs with faster FPS the higher you set the resolution at. This is against the mormal run of things re peformance and resolution, but it is a fact. All other things being equal, the higher resolution you set the sim at, the faster it runs. It might get you a few more FPS. cheers

So, how do these two statements remain compatible, uncleal? Using spacebar equals loss of immersion, no? I know what you're getting at though- at a recent flight sim show there was a stand where the guy had built a BF109 cockpit which had FF on the firing and rumble/vibration in the seat- looking out on to a projector screen- Now, THAT was something!

how serious of an offer are you
Fortiesboy replied to stumpjumper's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
"how serious of an offer are you" I've been seriously on offer for about ten years, but none of the young ladies has taken it up! -
Sorry olham, no, it wasn't played at the red barons funeral. It wasn't composed till 1938 !!

Hello Presently I run Trackir 3 pro with vector expansion, wearing a hat with a three prong clip. I'm wondering if the purchase of trackir 5 will be a backwards step or not? The trackir forums seem to have some reporting problems with all sorts of software versions. Does the latest software run well with XP? Anyone using a hat with trackir 5 and XP? What is it like?

FM Tweaking Tutorial--anyone interested?
Fortiesboy replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - Knowledge Base
I have played around a bit in Air edit, but I have made my changes just using the .cfg file. It seems that when an important change is made, OFF realizes that and then can see that it is not a "certified craft"- In fact when you go to select it to fly , it doesn't load and a message comes up to say it is an uncertified craft. This happens in campaign and ordinary QC, but in CFS3 QC you can get it to fly. -
FM Tweaking Tutorial--anyone interested?
Fortiesboy replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - Knowledge Base
Just seen this Chris, - interesting as always- and unlike my tweaks in FM, a lot deeper-lol I have for some while been flying modified FMs of some aircraft in my single play. Unfortunately the way i do it means that the plane will not load in campaign - as Duce said earlier- I altered the Dr1- and the Albatrosses and the pfalz, on the basis that all of them have RPMs, as shown in flight, which are well below the spec max RPM- E.g Fly the vanilla Dr1 and you will see the RPM is barely 1000- It's spec was 1200. Mine flies at 1200- and is a different plane- it now does "climb like a monkey " etc But, as i say, it will only fly in CFS3 QC - but that is no hardship as that is where I do most of my OFFing anyway ! -
Hello Lately, with my latest spec computer I've been able to run my settings at all 5s. However, IIRC, some computer generations ago, the devs recommended NOT using 5 for terrain and scenery. Uncleal made a recent comment re this " Do yourself a BIG Favor, drop back to 4 on the Terrain Slider, to eliminate possible unexplainable video problems down the road. Plus while you're at it it's a good idea to drop Scenery to 4 as well, the purpose there is to elevate your FPS. And YOUR eyes won't see the difference anyway." Devs - Is there substance to this warning, today, on a latest spec computer? It would be interesting to know what OFF player's settings are? And whether you see any differences between 4 setting and 5 setting.?

Greg - I'm sure that the latest mods allow IL2 to run with 6DOF. Try www.allaircraftarcade.com.

Actually, I was thinking particularly about the generation which brought in the national health service, which was born in 1948, but, it's not too important, - you just keep on letting your sarcasm show us just how clever you are. -

.......I intend to give you my version of what the great USA should be like - i.e bugger you Jack, I'm all right! Thank you Uncleal George Bernard Shaw was wrong actually- We are not separated by a common language, we are separated by a sense of compassion. The greatest attribute of the UK being a civilised society is the National Health Service. Where, if you are ill and are poor and cannot afford to pay a doctor, you do not have to suffer and die unaided, but you will be entitled to the necessary medical treatment, having made National insurance contributions. Thus many older working people, paid too little to buy private ( the only sort the conservative USA seems to want ) medical insurance, began to experience medical care, after working all their life, when not fighting two world wars. In the USA they would have been left on their own, as, those who have enough wealth to buy medical aid, would now want to continue that "wonderful conservative resilience" !! Bah! -

Yes- a lot of truth here, particularly the bit about essentials getting more expensive and "luxuries" cheaper. You find me a newly married couple where the husband's wage only will buy a house via a mortgage( And for Gawd's sake don't anyone get sexist with me re using the term husband!!) It will not happen now - but it did in my father's time. And as for the BA strike - it isn't greed to protect your terms and conditions when the management want to weaken them. What really annoys me though, about any strike, is the way the media only report on it when a strike is looming, never even saying that negotiations had been attempted for weeks or months before getting to the possibility of a strike. But, worse still, the media never report on the details of the dispute. E.g. BA strike. Does anyone know what Willie Walsh wants to do with the T&C of the employees- what their terms are and what he now wants them to be? Does anyone know what the unions have offered in response? Or why Willie walsh says the response is unacceptable? etc etc ? No- All we get from the media is Walsh saying the unions don't care about the campany and want to cripple it! ( sure, the employees want to destroy their jobs, do they ?? ) and the union saying that Walsh won't negotiate meaningfully. But most of all they report on how many of the public are disrupted! Hurrah for the media!! - My A-se.! But personally, on this issue, I'm laughing.! Some few years ago I decided never again to risk flying on commercial flights. I don't happen to think that that is as illogical a wariness to have, as many think it is. Just one of my foibles! cheers -

Quick Combat: Turkey Shoot, Dogfight
Fortiesboy replied to Toadvine's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Odd man out calling I seldom fly campaign, but mostly fly CFS3 QC. In that, I can change locations, weather, planes, enemy AI, numbers etc. Some locations are good at providing ground targets. Mostly myself and a few of the squadron take off to meet the incoming EA- scramble- and after dealing with them, if I've survived, I look around for the enemy trucks and use up my ammo on them. Hitting the trucks is not easy, many a time I clip the trees. Not campaign I know, but guaranteed action, even though time is limited. -
As a long time user of trackir - I had trackir 1, I am presently using trackir Pro 3 with vector expansion. I use a hat with the three pronged sensors. Works great. Used it for years, obviously I tried a trackir 4 at a mates, with the headphone clip, and i didn't get on. When i used the hat it was OK. Will the trackir 5 let me use the hat 3 pronged sensors, or MUST i use a headphone clip.? And, seriously, is there such a difference between the 3 and the 5, enough to buy it.? I would like answers for those who have tried both please! I use it every day. One of the best pieces of kit I ever bought. TIA

Kondor S! CFS3 and OFF have a peculiarity in that to get the best FPS you should run at the highest resolution you can. Normally, the general rule is that to get better FPS one should lower the res. But in this case it has been found that the opposite is true. Uncleal S! - This warningof yours was rlevant some year or more ago. Lots of computers have now moved on. It would be nice if the devs commented on this point you raise??

Good warning Simon- and well done. You could have told him "I'm just going to get my credit card" Put the phone down and leave it there. Wonder how long he would have stayed there waiting for you!!

Exactly! - I never did believe that it was going truly offline, even when their forum said it was. Eventually, they will learn. Then they will get some revenue. They got one or two to buy on the promise of having offline play without internet connection. But if they want sales to blossom, i think they'll have to go truly offline, like OFF is.
