Maybe he's betatesting on an ABC-80 and tweaking the settings for that. -
Multi/sub-object materials in Max?
Julhelm replied to Stary's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Yes the max material editor only has 24 slots but the actual amounts of materials you can have in your scene is unlimited. If you run out of slots, just pick one and reset it with the "X" buttom and make sure you check "apply to material in editor only". And when you need to edit a material, that's what the eyedropper is for. -

Or you could just tick the box that says "Render to files only" at the bottom of the render to textures rollout... -

I personally think everything but the panels themselves feel pretty flat with the SF ingame lighting. Have you experimented with baking/painting shadows onto the cockpit textures? -
My first project: Ticonderoga class
Julhelm replied to WhiteBoySamurai's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Rescale the pieces so you don't have any unused texture space. Also you can tile stuff that repeats so if you have two parts that look the same they can use the same texture space. Also make sure you have equal texel resolution all over. The checker map really helps with that. -
North Dakota Tanker
Julhelm posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
File Name: North Dakota Tanker File Submitter: Julhelm File Submitted: 07 May 2010 File Category: Cargo and Transports North Dakota Texaco tanker v1.0 for SF2 This is an attempt at making a better-looking target as compared to the stock cargoship. I think this looks better. Be advised this uses normalmapping and is thus incompatible with versions of the game earlier than february 2010. Works fine in DX9 however though you'll not see any per-pixel lighting. Won't work in 1st gen games so don't even bother. Pictars: Installation: Simply extract the contents of the package into your ground objects folder. It'll overwrite your stock cargoship so that, you know, it'll actually show up in missions. Known Issues: Destroyed model absolutely refuses to show up ingame. However I've included the lod file so any enterprising souls can give it a go. Credits: Model & textures by Nils 'Julhelm' Dücker Disclaimer: You MAY NOT use any part of this package in any payware package or otherwise take credit for it without first consulting me. Any problems post on the combatace boards or mail to NilsD <at> bredband <dot> net Click here to download this file -
Modern/WW2 Carrier Air Group

If they'd made the movie a few years earlier they would've sent an RA-5C instead of an RF-8 :( -
Sargasso sea or Devil's Triangle?
Julhelm replied to dsawan's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I've an old Johnny Hazard comic where pirates rule a ship cemetary in the Sargasso Sea that even has old battleships in it. -

Well the basic problem I have with them is that the lighting on the planes doesn't match the lighting on the background, so I'd tweak the curves on the planes. -

They'd work better if you tweaked the lighting on the planes to be a little more cinematic. Like on the HAWX screenshots which are quite well done. -
AH-64A Apache
Julhelm replied to Dels's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Looks good. I'd personally go with more contrast on the wear and tear and do an AO bake to bring out the depth of the details. -

This is a fictional VTOL jet inspired by the Kestrel jet from the Amiga games Zeewolf and Zeewolf 2. It is similar to the Harrier, but lighter and with vastly more powerful turbofan which, while making pop-up'n'fire-attacks a breeze, does guzzle up fuel at a rather alarming rate when in hover mode. Features: Custom cockpit by yours truly. Skin template included for your skinning pleasures. 3 skins: Ferris-type experimental camo Swedish Navy Gripen-style camo USMC Desert camo ------------------ People whose textures I've shamelessly borrowed/ripped off: Kesselbrut - Vigi pit for the side consoles Batman - Random gauges from the excellent F-4J cockpit because I was too lazy to do them myself :) The rest of the pit is mine, however. ------------------ Other info: This is a work in progress and subsequent refinements will be posted as time permits. In the meantime, I'll be grateful for any comments/suggestions. ----------------- Legal stuff: Sell or claim this as your own work and I will bust your kneecaps, steal your mother, rape your TV and smash your f***ing head in. Same goes for trying to sneak this into some payware package. Nils 'Julhelm' Dücker -
What If Screenshot Thread.......
Julhelm replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Screen Shots
Correct designation for that would be FV-12, as would the Convair 201 I think. Both being SCS fighter designs. -
I got laid off then rehired as a consultant for peanuts. Still I'd rather take peanuts than nothing. Better to be between jobs than unemployed.

THIS IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL OF MY NON-ISRAELI FRIENDS

I wouldn't mind if the palestinians were carpetbombed into extinction. After all they did vote for Hamas so that's the way the cookie crumbles. -

I had the Estes SR-71, a small missile like thing, one called Bail-Out which we used to launch a little teddy bear sky high to see whether or not his parachute would deploy properly (sometimes it didn't which looked funny) and a swastika-adorned V-2 made turned from foam. I also bought a "lifting body" design that didn't really work that well so dad designed his own based on the X-24.

F-86 Sabres for the NEW KOREAN MOD

One of my dad's friends once rivetcounted the manual to Their Finest Hour. Apparently one of the german squadron insignias on the code wheel was the wrong shade of green. -
Well, I Think its Time to move on !
Julhelm replied to Veltro2k's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I used to say that about painting as well but the old adage stays true that practice makes perfect. -
Humans also have no real perception of time. We place great symbolic values in human-invented calendar years like 2000 and 2012 and 1000 and so on, but what makes these years significant in the universe? They're just numbers invented by one civilization on one planet in one galaxy out of endless galaxies in a universe that is for all intents and purposes, infinite.

Well I must say I think your models are really good but you should practice more on polishing your texturing skills. -
