Raesch was assigned to Jasta 43 in June 1918 and flew the Fokker DVII in combat. On 25 July 1918, he was shot down by a Sopwith Camel flown by South African ace Ivan Hind of 40 Squadron. Raesch escaped with only minor burns when he parachuted from the flaming aircraft. He was credited with 7 victories.
