+GKABS Posted yesterday at 10:35 AM Posted yesterday at 10:35 AM A tragic incident involving two Japanese navy helicopters has resulted in one confirmed fatality and the disappearance of seven crew members, following what is believed to be a collision prior to their descent into the Pacific Ocean during training exercises at night. The Maritime Self-Defense Force deployed two SH-60K helicopters, each with a crew of four, which lost contact late Saturday night near Torishima Island, situated approximately 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of Tokyo, during their nighttime training operations. Defense Minister Minoru Kihara has stated that one body has been recovered, while search efforts continue for the remaining seven missing individuals. The precise cause of the crash remains undetermined; however, officials have indicated a probable collision between the two helicopters, as articulated by Kihara. In light of the incident, Adm. Ryo Sakai, the chief of staff of the navy, has declared a suspension of all SH-60 training activities pending an ongoing investigation and the establishment of safety measures. During the recovery operations, investigators successfully retrieved a flight data recorder, components from each helicopter’s rotor blades, and debris thought to belong to both aircraft, suggesting that the SH-60Ks may have been in close proximity prior to the collision. In response to the unresolved status of the missing crew members, search and rescue operations have been significantly increased, involving the deployment of 12 warships and seven aircraft. Additionally, vessels and aircraft from the Japanese coast guard are actively participating in the extensive search efforts. 5
