Redcrown Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 I used the mission editor to create a quick mission in WOV so I could practice SAM avoidance techniques. I've got my A-6 up against an SA-2L in 1971. I fly right to the SAM, then over it, and then well beyond it but it won't fire on my plane. I've tried low and high passes over the SAM, but it just won't launch at me. The AAA ZSU's fire at me, but not the SAM's. What am I doing wrong here? Quote
+Spectre_USA Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 More importantly, what is the radar system for that flaming telephone pole? Without one, it cannot lock and launch... Quote
ezlead Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 The radar for the SA-2 missile is the Fansong. It was a weird sounding radar when it was heard over the ECM system in an EA-6a. It sounded just like a rattlesnake rattling. Just like a rattlesnake it also gave you chills up your back. Get the Fansong radar up and running by your SAM launchers and then prepare for a fight. In 1972 it was the Fansong B radar. In 1972 it also had a Home-On -Jamb capability. My right seater and I were the first to find this out one bright sunny day in May off of Haiphong. He hit the switches and turned off all the jammers, while I did a split S and got the H--ll out of 28000 ft. We got shot at 3 separate times that mission. The CAG leading the mission was convinced we were "Nuts". ( We went back up on station 2 more times after getting shot at.) He watched the whole thing while coordinating the mission from his BARCAP position off the coast. Quote
+Spectre_USA Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 You've got big brass ones, buddy! Glad you figured out that home on jam thingmie in a timely fashion. You don't usually get second chances in real life versus an SA-2... Quote
Redcrown Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 Thanks guys, I'll try putting the Fansong next to it and I'll check the service date of the SA-2L. Quote
Redcrown Posted July 22, 2006 Author Posted July 22, 2006 Well, I've tried it all and no type of SAM whatsoever will launch at me! Anymore advice? Do SAMs launch for you folks after you've created a scenario using the editor? Quote
+Crusader Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Fansong has certain min/max values for search and track ranges, also a min Altitude of 1000 meters fly away from the radar for a couple of miles, then back, stay above 4000 ft it should find you Quote
