Yup. That's right. Sierra made German vesion of Red Baron 2 avaliable for download free of charge. A little while ago but I learned it just now.

http://ftp.sierra.com/sierra/redbaron3d/

Grab the big juicy archive in the /other/ subfolder and then rb3d_spr in /updates/

Then follow installation instructions found here(they also provide links to a couple of other fixes for multiplayer and XP)

http://www.fallbabies.com/virtualaces/redbaron/

Then to contunue the stream of freeware goodness I'd suggest installing Hell's Angels superpatch

http://www.hellsangels.firstflare.com/main.htm

Have no idea what other free stuff goes well with it. Suggestions?

P.S. BTW, first Red Baron (EGA version in 16-color palette) is also free.

http://files.filefront.com/redbrnexe/;946481;/fileinfo.html

Needs DOSBox for real fun though.

Ok... I've overcome my fears and tried it with WFP2 and Campaign Manager and MissionGen. Requires constant tweaking but...

Awesome. Fighting Parasol on E.III in 1915 is a completely different experience.

Scroll down to Red Baron 3D. You'll find buckets of stuff to keep you happy. I've been feeling smug ever since I found it.

My X-52 Pro trigger button is not recognised by RB3D 'cause I'm not using PPJoy yet. At first it was irritating (I had to plug in simpler joystick to play) but later I actually realised that this bug can be turned into a feature. :umnik2: There were no trigger buttons on flight stick at those times - you can't control throttle, filght and fire at the same time because one free hand is needed to pull the trigger (see "Blue Max"). So now I'm shooting using spacebar only. That really adds immersion and difficulty to 255% AI, engine faiure, fuel mixture control etc :good: Maybe later I'll bind trigger to one of thick switches on X52 base.

I use Saitek ST290 pro, it has trigger and RB recognizes it

Even have bombs and 2 views and hat switch as well as trotted

All from defalt settings just setup the stick software and picked

Joystick in RB settings and I was all set, as for engine management

Just before FE came out last year, I was about to make an effort at getting RB3D running, but I heard there were some serious hurdles if you didn't have a Voodoo graphics card.

How is it running for you now?

Posted

Bandy, if you use so called glide wrapper such as dgVoodoo you can run RB3D in Glide mode on most modern video cards. It seems, nVidia fits better for RB3D as ATI cards have a number of glitches. Alhough even for them gameplay is pretty stable and the picture is awesome provided you install some of the superpatches.

WOW! Got Alb D.II in my Jasta (using WFP). At first pit looked a lot like in D.I. Then as the new year 1917 came, it felt a bitt different - then I realised that they actually modelled the switch from leaky ear radiators to top-wing mounted ones. I wonder if that means that I won't get an oil leak every other dogfight.

Voodoo graphics card? they still exist?

I still have a perfectly good Voodoo 3 PCI card that I run on a Windows 98 partition specifically for running EAW, RB3D and Jane's F-15.

Now, can you BUY one now? That's a different question. Maybe Amazon or eBay...... You'll have to pry mine out of my cold, dead hands.
