Yeah saw it live on ESPN 2 his chutes didn't deploy after he lost the body of the car.

The irony of this, is that I witnessed a similar tragedy at the same track during the summer of 1977 or '78, and the driver was even running in the same lane that Scott Kalitta had his accident in.

 

The car in that incident was a jet dragster, essentially a J-79 bolted to a tube frame. Somehow, the the driver lost conciousness, never tripped the braking 'chutes, and hit the wall at the end of the track at well over 300 MPH.

 

Here's a Youtube clip of J-79 powered jet dragsters at the same track...gee, they even sound like an F-104 (or an F-4)!
