assailant Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 For some reason I thought you had to be subsonic to drop bombs. Not missiles (a2a), but definitely bombs. Am I crazy? Or was this just "fun" in the video?
switch Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 No, you`re not crazy! He was hauling butt over Mach1 ingressing and egressing. In the pop though, he slowed down a bit. I couldn`t see the airspeed readout on his HUD or the gauge but I noticed his rpm dropping slightly when he was "in hot". And yes, he was having fun!!
Fenna Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003 Aircraft don't need to be sub sonic to drop bombs. Many aircraft, such as the Tornado IDS and the F-111 were designed specifically to drop ordnance at supersonic speeds.
Seawolf Posted November 16, 2003 Posted November 16, 2003 There is video at the boeing site showing the FA18E doing Supersonic drops.
switch Posted November 16, 2003 Posted November 16, 2003 There is video at the boeing site showing the FA18E doing Supersonic drops. Yea, I`m a little behind on current technology. Seawolf, can you give me a link to that Boeing vid? I tried to browse through their videos but I couldn`t find that one.
Seawolf Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 I will try and find it. It was dropping MK82s in a dive at Mach1 (vapor cloud around the plane and the bombs, it was pretty cool)
Seawolf Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 This is not the same photo from a video I saw but it does show what I am talking about. http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/fa18/fa183.html
