godzilla1985 0 Posted March 30, 2009 I recently started a campaign for the German side in 1915 my pilot is flying a Fokker EIII. About the 5th mission I pulled a "Lone Wolf" patrol. I loaded up the mission and off I went. I didn't have much time too play so I was using the warp feature. Several waypoints later I was booted out of warp with a low fuel message. I checked my map and seen I had not even come close to finishing my assigned waypoints. I was down to 9 or 12% fuel load and a looooong way from home over enemy territory . I did manage to almost make it to a friendly airbase just over the front lines, I had to do a dead stick landing into a field about 200 yards from the airfield . My pilot survived and I wasn't captured, so I started another mission. I pulled the same "Lone Wolf" patrol again. Thinking I didn't pay attention to something critical in the last one I checked my fuel load, it was 100% hummm okay. I then checked my flight plan it was something like 220 miles round trip. SO just for the heck of it I checked my specs on the Fokker EIII, found out my max range was 220 miles! Did pilots in WWI routinely fly to the very edge of their aircrafts max range? Or is this a bug maybe? Or am I doing something wrong? Long story short I flew the mission but did not use warp, I figured I'd fly my assigned flight path until my fuel got down to 55% and head home. I managed to bag an observation ballon and 3 Be2's of a flight of 5 . I ended up getting shot down as I got careless and chased the last Be2's too close to their home airfield and the archie got me . I crashed landed was wounded, survived but was now a POW, bummer.

+Polovski 460 Posted March 30, 2009 Yes flying at full throttle is not fuel efficient for sure, and also make sure you lean the engine. Also these crates weren't designed to fly at "warp" speed ;) Warp is quite bad at fuel usage so stop and check often if you use warp. Feel free to point out to your commander that the mission could be too far for your fuel load and try an alternative target ;)
godzilla1985 0 Posted March 30, 2009 Thanks for the response guys and I will do as you advise But I do have one more question and this refers to the fist lone wolf patrol I did. I forgot to mention that when I entered warp I couldn't stop it. It rapped off several waypoint in a row when I noticed my fuel % getting below 25%. I couldn't find how to come out of warp but I assumed (wrongly) that at this fuel level I must be close to home base and finished my patrol. It's when it kicked me out of warp with a low fuel warning I realized something was very wrong, thats when I checked the map and seen just how far I had to go. Is there a button to disengage warp? Or is this only possible with a triggered event like enemy aircraft, damage or finishing your goals not after every waypoint?
godzilla1985 0 Posted March 30, 2009 Control X - cancels any existing Warp You might check-out the STICKY OFF Tips & Cheats . . there's a complete list of Keycommands used in OFF Thanks uncleal thats exactly what I have been looking for
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted March 30, 2009 godzilla, I think all the others here have pretty well answered your question, but I woud like to add that you can lean back your engine a great deal and it will still run as it should, once you have some alt. On most of the planes I give the mixture about 25 "clicks" to the lean side when I'm above 2,000' with no performance issues and much lower fuel consumption. Also, when I warp, I only do so until I reach the front and then I drop out of warp and fly at normal speed, (or if time is short, bump up the flying speed via "ctrl-shift-E"). I began doing this shortly after starting my recent DiD campaign because I really wanted to appreciate the full affect Archie has while I'm flying. That is something that is missed in warp, and I think it takes far too much away from this sim not to have to fly through it. But then again, I tend to be a glutton for punishment. Now then, would someone please hand me that fresh willow switch so I can flail myself about the back and upper arms. Cheers! Lou
