Added immersion.

Recommended Posts

It could be described as chronically anal behaviour, but it was purely accidental/fortuitous. I have the game time synched with real time (4th april 1917 / 4th april 2009). If I miss a day/mission etc I fast-forward the in-game time to re-sync with real time.

God...somebody help me. :haha:

Ever take your wrist watch and sync it with the time in the sim? Then check your waypoints by your watch, rather than the sim?

Yeah, we're both long gone, but in good company.

I seem to remember some guy (quite awhile ago) posting pictures of his mock fuselage/CP set up with joy stick/stick, huge projection screen in front of him and the guy was trying to figure out how he could get the whole thing to move with the game movements.

There actually is a flight sim cage that does that, maybe some one has the link to the company that makes it?

Hello,

we're in good company lol.

I remember when SH3 came out, some people tried to patrol with their boat in real-time, one went so far as to hold out for 5 months (in the "atlantic") sleeping only when the boat was submerged, and regularly being woken up by a clock to control boat and possible contacts. He even made it into the newspapers, but he also lost his job lol.

One proposed a device called "dial-a-shtink" to get the right immersion - you could choose Diesel smell, hot engine oil, farts, 5-month-old clothes and stale and moist surroundings. Additionally you couild empty a bucket of ice-cold salt water over your head, do not change clothes, run downstairs into the cellar as soon as the alarm bell rings, and greet all incoming telephone calls with "Jawohl Herr Doenitz !"

Be careful with immersion, this can get smelly, i am sure he also did not shave, or bath

Greetings,

Catfish

P.S But SH3 IS immersive ...

That's... disturbing, but not that surprising. I once tried to do a 24 hour stint in GTR2's 24 Hours of Spa - unsuccessfully I should add. I crashed out in hour six from exhaustion. Oops.

Looks like SH3 is quite a good sim. Not to get too far off topic but, does it run under Vista? I might need to add this to my collection.

I should hasten to add that my 6 hour GTR2 stint was back during my days of being very, very single. I have since found a girlfriend who actually likes OFF and have started to make a full recovery ;)

Captain - were can I find a girlfriend like yours?

You guys are definitely mad, and I would offer to cure you - but I have another sortie in 10 minutes,

and I can't give it a miss. There are some SPADs out there round the Marne bend, waiting to get burnt...

When playing SH3 and then Shilent Hunter 4, I used to spend time on the gulf coast at Texas during winter months. I would see a tanker, or supply ship in the distance and watch for it and envision sending the torpedo at just the right time and sink the b------. Talk about a mind going a little strange!. Someone help me when I start seeing an airplane in the air and grab the nearest shotgun or rifle and start pulling the trigger!. I'm not that far along, but don't you look to the sky more often than you used too?

I certainly do! Especially if I'm driving with the sun at my back - never know what might jump you from there!

Sometimes while I'm driving my truck I'll see an airplane in the distance and find myself reaching for the "Labels" button. Wifey tells me to calm down.

It's now virtually impossible for me to see an airplane while driving without calculating lead on it. :fie:

If I look at the sky? You mean the REAL sky - outdoors?

A friend called earlier today and asked, why I was indoors in this sunny good weather.

Me: "Sunny good weather? Bah! Round the Marne bend and Bonneuil Ferme,

we have typical April weather - slate grey clouds; it always looks like rain! Since

a whole week or more now!"

He: "Why don't you go out and have a walk?"

Me: "A walk? Are you kidding? Everyone else has 10 or more confirmed kills, and more

claims! I have to reach up with them - I got the sim so late! I have duties! The next

sortie is in 10 minutes!!! A walk - tch!!!"

I promised him though, to have a walk or jogging tomorrow. Now I can only hope, it will rain...

Hello,

@CaptSopwith:

" ... Looks like SH3 is quite a good sim. Not to get too far off topic but, does it run under Vista? ..."

Should be no problem with Vista, however make sure to download the most recent GWX "supermod" organized by Lehmann - this turns SH3 into the best sim that ever was - certainly better than SH4, but also than almost all sims i have seen yet. There's also the "NYGM" ("Not your grandmother's mod") by Teddy bear, which is also good, but it is up to you ..

There are life rafts, debris, oil slicks, vicious destroyers and corvettes and you learn a lot about Sonar and evading it later in the war. There is harbour traffic, air patrols, all kinds of different ships and U-boat types even with the "U-boat-AA-traps" . But it is not easy to hit with a torpedo, as well as surviving later in the war.

There are different camera positions to observe and make screenshots from, all via mouse. I had tons of screenshots, in fact i found myself just standing on the bridge and staring at waves and sky for hours - the original sim ("vanilla version") made by the romanian dev team was already great, and playable out-of-the-box, but with those mods - unbelievable. It is definitely worth it. If you really get it be sure to play the "school" missions, that gives you a hint of what to expect .. you have to learn a lot. Since i have some experience from my navy days, and sailing i still found this convincing in any respect.

Thanks and greetings,

Catfish

Wow, sounds good to me Catfish. All of my early PC games (save Wolfenstein 3D, but who didn't have that??) were sims. F1, flying, sub sim (Seawolf), etc. It'll be nice to get a few more sims to compliment OFF on my new PC. I'll see if I can pick it up.

I used to do that while flying. One time, flying near my home at about 1000 feet I saw a guy in a Super Cub crossing below me right to left patrolling the power lines at about 100 feet. I banked left and dove right down on his six. Of course he never saw me, but the speeds, etc. were pretty much what we encounter in OFF. If I'd had guns, I'd have peppered him pretty good from my Taylorcraft, but since he had a more powerful engine he could've made good his escape unless my first hits were telling.

:blush2:

I suspect, Mr. Lucky, that there's a good bit more of that than people suspect, including those poor lunkers in their GA craft just tooling along to wherever. I know I've been a party to such shenanigans in my friend's RV4 a good number of times (strafing the enemy airfield, for instance....).

We're all basically Walter Mitty fighter-pilots deep down, and I often think if only the FAA knew how many of us want to really use those tickets....

On the other note, I had the first SH, and it was pretty absorbing. I have to say that the movie above really is enticing, but I CAN'T get any other sims!!! My wife says she's a war widow already with just OFF, and I broke down and ordered IL2 for Bo60 the other day for some MP action!

:nono:

About 40,000 Link trainers were made back in the 1930's.. would be interesting to modify one for OFF?

Instead of wasting money on such gear, you should switch off all the non-realistic devices

like target cone, TAC, labels and info text, and instruments.

I tried it on my last sortie - it was so immersive. You suddenly see everything again...

My father used to run a scale and R/C models shop back in the day. Among our customers (if you think we're nuts you should see scale modellers, they can debate the historical accuracy of a certain camo scheme quoting RLM numbers all day long) there were two brothers studying abroad in Yugoslavia (between the wars). They also had a roommate who was driven to the edge of insanity by their habits.

What they would do was start a campaign in Silent Hunter 2 (that was back around 1992-1995 mind you) and play it real time. As luck would have it, their classes were timed so that at any time one of them would be at home, including outtings for cofee after school, socialising, etc. So, the guy who was at home would be watching tv or studying and have the PC run SH2 with the volume cranked up and the sub making way to the next waypoint. When the alarm was sounded he would go to the other room the PC was at and play through the encounter. The thing is, this continued during the night too. You can imagine this didn't go down too well with the roommate, talk about getting awakened at 4am by an alarm bell ringing!

In regards to the flight motion simulator here is a link:

http://www.acesim.com/main.html

I have purchased the plans for this though I have not found much time to work on them (we had a baby in January). It's relatively inexpensive and there are plenty ways to mod it if you look at the link on that site "See what our customers are building". Now if you are a little more technically inclined and have a little more cash, you can do what the guy in the next link did with the Joyrider as a beginning platform.

http://ptyxiouxos.net//greekbotics/user_pr...t_simulator.htm

I'm still looking forward to at least building the Joyrider though I am not ruling out the mechanized modification. Hope I may have inspired someone to try it. Talk about immersion.

Cheers,

John
