Hello, new to game and hit a frustration point :(

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Got the game last week and have spent each evening since learning it. Is a bit hard with no manuals or guides I can find to print out and read like (a 'normal' game), but persevering and hopefully will be fun when I learn the in and outs of it.

In the first instance, it would be nice to have some kind of cockpit diagram for each plane. I'm flying a Camel and have to use the GUI dials cos the guns cover the virtual dials ingame and can't seem to find a way to use my mouse to look about and get a better view of things.

and sheesh, I can't keep up my altitude and speed with my wingmen when they leave the area around the airfield and having to resort to 'x' to catch up with em.

Anyway, enough blathering, I encountered a game killing problem tonight and I need help. I'm flying as a fighter and survived a few missions in my campaign until I got asked to bomb an enemy airfield. I set my 'release ordnance' to my preferred button, and ENTER is also still the default too. 4x25lb cooper bombs on my camel. Finally get too target, in good aim, press my bombs away button - nothing happens. Press ENTER, nothing - still got the bombs.

Died soon after :( Started a freeflight sesh with bombs and no button I use releases them. The only thing I can think why I can't drop my bombs is cos I'm a fighter pilot and not a bomber. Is this the case? If so, as a fighter in the campaign, how do I get around the bombing missions?

Any advice much appreciated. Also, if there's some guide for new players (never played cfs3 before either), please let me know how to get it. Love the genre, this game is impressive, but I need some real advice on a n00bish level, thanks :))

As far as the bombs go, have had the same thing happen to me on occaision. Its led me to belive that maybe after you select the weapon, you only have so long to deploy it. Anyways, i just make sure i hit the key mapped to return(select weapon), right before i think i am going to drop/fire an ordinance.

And as to looking at the guages (ive never looked at cockpit gauges to be honest, they are way to small for me to read), if you dont have trackir, you should seriously consider getting it.

and just to make sure you know, you can move the hud gaueges around, if you dont like where they are. (drag and drop) There is even a post somewhere on how to make them smaller

Welcome balalaika,

The bombs not dropping issue you are having could be solved by hitting backspace before you try and release them. Backspace is the default for 'select ordinance' or something of the like. So you must select your bombs and THEN you should be able to use enter to drop them. Same thing goes with rockets.

As for keeping up with your wingmen, it is possible you are flying into a headwind. AI craft are not affected by wind. Also, auto trim and or auto mixture can sometimes put a hamper on your max speed if you have them set to on.

Hope some of that helps. GL

S!

Hey thanks guys for the feedback and advice, really helped (I hadn't seen that select ordnance button before). Unfortunatley for the local farms around my airfield, I can now drop bombs! Cheers also for pointing out the manuals folder too, I'll be sure to check them out when I'm done with this note.

Reading my post this evening, I am sorry if I came across as a whiny little sod! It was very early this morning when I posted it, after a few hours of stressful flying culminating in my disastrous bombing run at 1.30am! Not a very good first post.

So, at least on my first thread, I'll say HELLO again! I have been reading the forums for the last couple of weeks before I ordered the game and you all seem very friendly and intelligent chaps. I hope to be around for sometime and will try to fit in and refrain from asking too many silly questions.

Right, off to dispersal to read some flight manuals! Tally ho folks :)

Welcme Balaika! - you're gonna love this sim.

1. You can use your mouse to drag and release the virtual dials to any point on the screen you prefer them. They will stay there on all other planes/missions until you move them. You can also take them off entirely with F5 or select which ones to keep/hide seperately with some other command I forget at the moment "SHift F5-1, 2 or 3"? ...And F2 brings up some basic commands

2. I don't think there's an option to use the mouse to look around - so unless you have a joystick with a POV hat, you're probably stuck with the number pad views.

And welcome to an amazing simulation.

Welcome

There is a very nice command key card made by Homeboy in the General Discussion at the top that you can print.

cheers

beside the excellent command key reference card, you can also find manuals in the OBD directories - can't remember the exact path, and I'm now at work - which will help you flesh out your knowledge.

If you have any other problems - just ask. There are no dumb questions when you don't know the answer, and everyone here started by not knowing. Some (like me) are still pretty much in that position! I'm very happy to pay tribute to all the very knowledgeable and infinitely patient posters here whose kindness has enabled me to get much more from BH&H than I could have on my own.

So ask away!
