RAF_Louvert 101 Posted May 5, 2009 Zeppelins Over Paris ! View File Greetings All, Here is a challenging mission for you to try. A pair of zeppelins are staging a daring dusk raid on Paris. You must scramble your Camels, which are stationed on the northern edge of the city, and climb to intercept the airships before they can reach the Eiffel Tower. But beware, they have waves of escorting Hun fighters tagging along, and despite the help you will receive from the Spad VII's of ESC15 you will still have your hands full. Remember, your primary objective is to destroy the brace of zeppelins before they can reach the Tower. And one more warning, a certain ace from Jasta 37 and his wingman have been reported in the area as well, so watch out. Don't forget to use the Camel's outstanding climbing abilities to stay above the enemy fighters as best you can, and to reach the airships as quickly as possible. And if you are skillful enough to down your targets you will still have to fight your way back home and land safely. Best of luck! P.S. You will need the "ZeppelinL30" folder in your "aircraft" folder, and you can download that file from the following link: ZeppelinL30 files . Bigfish2 0 Posted May 9, 2009 Well I had such fun with this, thanks a million Louvert! This is the first time I've installed an "add-on" "aircraft" (the Zeppelins) and a mission - I googled "Add CFS3 plane" but er, its not hard is it?! There's a real wow factor seeing the sunrise over the Eiffel tower, the two giant Zepps way up there, fighting off attacks on the way up from Albatri, and then when I finally got to altitude I'd forgotten how to fire the rockets, wasted half of them, had to machine gun the second Zepp and man it went down slow and burning, just awesome! I really appreciated your skill and effort in making this for us. Just one thought, might it be worthwhile putting a sticky in explaining how to do aircraft and mission instals? (by some expert not a newbie like me).
Bigfish2 0 Posted May 9, 2009 PS Did I say "sunrise"?! Must have been all that excitement...
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted May 10, 2009 Glad to know you are enjoying it Bigfish2. This was my first attempt at creating a mission for OFF, and it was a learning experience, especially since I couldn't get "Mission Builder" to work for me. I ended up going in and just writing the whole thing in the code, using a copy of another mission file as the "template". Also, you could go into the BHaH Help forum and check, might already be a post there about installing the add-ons, and your suggestion about having one here as well is a good idea so mention it to one of the OFF administrators when you get the opportunity. And not to worry about the sunrise thing, I get excited about this sim too. Cheers! Lou BTW, I made a short movie on this mission and placed it in the General Forum yesterday. Here's the post: BRITISH emPATHEy LIMITED presents the following short film, meant to inspire and excite the folks back in Blighty: CLICK HERE FOR "ZEPPELINS OVER PARIS !" Enjoy. . Bigfish2 0 Posted May 10, 2009 Loved it! Especially that very cute intro through the newspaper. When is Hollywood expected to discover you?
OlPaint01 0 Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) Hello RAF_Lou This "Zeppelins over Paris" mission is absolutely fantastic. With the sun sinking in the west and light playing on the two Zepps, and the Eiffel Tower in the distant haze...its just breathtakingly beautiful. I see what you mean about having to out-climbing the escorts. And it really takes many minutes to complete that steep climb to altitude without stalling out. I have to admit that the Camel does climb like a monkey. But I was so disappointed when after I plunked each Airship with a pair of LePieur rockets, I did not get the gorgeous explosion that you showed in the Video you posted? I felt that I was cheated when I did not see the flaming hulks sink back to earth. What did I do wrong? It appears that I am missing the required spectacular flame effects files. Where do I go to get my copy so I can see this wonderful sight when popping those huge hydrogen-filled gas bags? RAF_Louvert 101 Posted May 11, 2009 Good Morning OlPaint, Glad you are enjoying the mission. The OFF developers did an outstanding job with the sky effects, (and everything else), and you find out just how outstanding at times such as sunset and sunrise. As to the flaming of the zeps, you are not missing any files there Sir. I have discovered that if you hit them at close range with the rockets they will just "pop" and you won't get the spectacular firey explosion. I assume this is coded right into the damage model of the airship and so is something that can't be changed. However, if instead you hit the zeps with your rockets from a very far range with a glancing shot they will be damaged but not destroyed, and then you can make gun passes until they flame. I will add that I tried several different attacks on the zeps and it seems you can flame them with guns only and it takes about as long to do so with or without the initial glancing rocket hit. I was shocked and a bit disappointed as well the first time I hit one with the rockets and it just vanished, (except for the tail fins that spun away). But it is still a lot of fun to hunt them, and once you know the trick to getting them to flame it is quite a sight. Hope this helps, OlPaint. Enjoy! Cheers! OlPaint01 0 Posted May 11, 2009 Hey RAF-Lou That tip about using a guns attack was just what the doctor ordered. I popped the gas bag with an outstanding explosion and flame as the airship fell from the sky! IIRC, you said somewhere else that you built this mission following the example layout of another already published Phase 3 mission. How difficult would it be to convert a Phase 2 Zepp or Gotha Night Raid on London Mission with the search lights glaring and AA exploding all around? I have already downloaded the Gotha from Regs Hanger and I am rar'en to blow several 'buffs" out of the sky flying with a Home Defense squadron of Camels. RAF_Louvert 101 Posted May 12, 2009 OlPaint, I imagine that with a little tweaking some of the Phase II missions can be adapted. If you could send me the mission file and the Gotha files, or tell me where I can download them, I can give it a go and see if we can get something sorted out. Thanks. And don't those zeps put up the fireworks when they ignite. Cheers! Lou
OlPaint01 0 Posted May 13, 2009 (edited) Hello RAF_Lou I found one of Pilotsden's old Phase2 Raid on London missions with both Gothas and Zepps on Sim-Outhouse download archive. "The GREAT LONDON GOTHA RAID" is in the 'CFS3 Missions and Campaigns (OFF)' section. And I found the Searchlights bundled in "Berlin_off_Phase2_mission" in 'Add-Ons by Eurofinn' Section of SOH. The searchlights are said to be available on www.groundcrew.com website but I think that site has been taken down. I believe that PD's raid on London mission is a daylight raid as it stands. I suppose the time of day could be set to late evening or at night so the Archie shell blasts show with a bright flash and the search lights illuminate the enemy bombers. The Gotha that I have is the Alpha version on www.RegsHanger.com website and you already have the ZeppelinL30 file. These missions are the best thing since sliced bread... I have yet to get Mission Builder to make a workable mission for me. I think you found the trick to build new missions from old ones. Did you build the "Gotha Terror" video that Catch posted on the General Discussion Section of CombatACE OFF forum? It is really great. RAF_Louvert 101 Posted May 13, 2009 Thanks OlPaint, I appreciate the info and links. I am starting to play around with the Gothas and some of the other add-ons and will let you know when I get a new mission ready to run. The "Gotha Terror" video is all the work of catch, and it is excellent! Cheers! Lou
sitting_duck 3 Posted May 13, 2009 (edited) (quote) especially since I couldn't get "Mission Builder" to work for me. I ended up going in and just writing the whole thing in the code, using a copy of another mission file as the "template". Just in case you didnt know, you have to get into mission builder thru start > all programs > Overflanders fields > over flanders fields mission builder. Shortcuts that you make for the mb.exe wont work, nor will clicking on the mb.exe in explorer. stump did put up a shortcut that will work in the mission building forum i belive. havnt heard of any problems for vista users for misson builder, so not sure if you have to do the run as administrator, or run in xp compatiblity mode thing but congratulations, looks like your first mission is a big hit. Winston DoRight 3 Posted May 19, 2009 Well, I've played this mission several times and twice I've gotten to altitude and shot down both zepps. I've then joined in the fray with the scouts and shot down at least 8 of them on my way back to the airfield. There's a half dozen enemy scouts left when I suddenly get the "goals failed" message at top of the screen. Is there a time limit to landing back at home base?
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted May 19, 2009 Good Morning Winston, As I understand it, there are numerous reasons why you might "fail" the mission. Not reaching certain waypoints and/or objectives in a set time window; accruing a threshold amount of damage to your aircraft; allowing the enemy to reach their objectives, etc. The sim engine decides when the total of these factors is "enough" and tells you you have failed. I'm sure others here have a better idea of what exactly is involved in this. Hope the info is helpful Sir. Cheers! Lou
exc141ac 0 Posted May 29, 2009 Oh, the horror . . . no, wait, the absolute delight. Just had two goes at it -- wonderful. Flew through the tower, zapped the gas bags, got into a couple of fur balls . . . fantastic. Even grabbed a couple of screen shots and did an avatar -- that's two of the rockets flaming the zep. Thanks so very much for a wonderful morning.
