Boost for piston-engined aircraft?

Recommended Posts

I think I've missed something here...

Where is the "Boost" - or "War Emergency Power", if you prefer - for piston engines? I'm missing it! In CFS3, it is well modelled, and it does come in useful now and then. I'm sure that it must be in there somewhere in SF, but I can't find it.

Any help?

I know, i wish i had this too, it seems that whenever i go to bomb a target in a flying fortress, but order my men to take it out too just in case i miss, they just zoom off ahead when im at full throttle leaving me behind.

Looking that way...

I think it could be linked to some sort of afterburner effect - the increase in thrust when you put it through the gate can be determined by the data.ini. But as far as I can see, afterburner is determined not by pushing a button, but by throttle settings alone. Could that be separated out and programmed independently to give the pilot control over it?

That's a very reasonable assumption. Giving independent control in a similar fashion to say, landing gear and tailhooks, then I'm pretty sure you can't, but you could set the afterburner threshold at 98%-100% so you at least have something comperable to top speed before hitting the wartime boost.

Why not a fake afterburner for an engine that only goes into effect at 100%? The other thing that comes to mind is playing around witht the thrust vectoring and having a seperate engine that kicks in when you move the nozzle setting, except that it doesn't change direction and the 'new' engine provides a bit more thrust.

I think the Yak-141 has an ini dance like that, with an new engine kicking in only when the thrust vectoring is set to down.

I remember that someone "gave" the B-52 some kind of WEP. Sadly I can't remember either the author or what the mod is called. It was on thi site anyway

I think I made a fake afterburner that only is in affect at close to 100% Its a new A-6A Data .INI

Some interesting ideas there... Thanks!

I posted the same question over at TK's, so I wonder what further ideas may have cropped up, too.

No, nothing that can be used directly. It'll be more difficult than I'd expected.

Could you just create afterburner, maybe add a sound to it where the engine gets louder, working harder, create no effect of fire, and just make it so you move faster?

That seems to be where we're looking. Maybe at 98% throttle or so. The other problem is that boost was limited to a certain duration and could - and did - cause engine damage if overused.
