no mod folder second post for help

hello second time i asked this question and yes i read the knowledge base

i have a question.i know i sound stupid, but i downloaded sfp2europe installed the june patch i ran the game and i got a directory with objects and aircraft folder no mod folder or saved game folder. am i missing something the aircraft i add which is cinverted for sfp1 addon go in ok but i dont have any markings on them.when i go to fly them ii read the knowlegde base but i cant understand where the mod folder and saved game folder are at in the directory or do they have to be created

Are you talking about decals?

 

Decals go into a separate folder called "Decals" in the same level as "Aircraft".

Then inside the Decals folder there should be a directory of the same name as the aircraft.

Inside these folders are squadron folders with the decal files in them.

There is no folder named "mod", if that's what you're asking, and if you're running the game in XP, the pertinent folders are located in the "My Docmuments" folder, under "Thirdwire". You may have to create additional folders within that in order to add mods (sounds, flight, weapons folders, etc.).

Why did TK decide to make this file structure change? Especially given the number of third party and "aged" aircraft for us it just seems like a PITA. He had to have some rationalization for it.

Most of the design changes were made to deal with Vistas UAC according to him - his games have to work properly out of the box im afraid - and he has compensated us in some other ways.

 

  • Keeping the mod files separate to the game files is much better for newbies - who stand less chance of messing up the game install.
  • The new merged install is miles better - also requiring only 1 patch install.
  • Weapons are now plug and play like the Aircraft

It can be a slight pain for older stuff but the merged install, ease of installation of aircraft, objects, weapons, etc. No more patching woes. Makes it all worth it.

I was going to say, this structure is MUCH better overall. And if you're smart and read the knowledge base, you can have that mod folder be anywhere. The only thing that is not as nice is handling decals, everything else is much easier. It's always the transition that's the hardest part.

Ah the devilish UAC, that makes sense. OK thanks for the info guys. I forget that not everyone is in the local admin group of their PC and has UAC disabled. :)

Because Ive been wondering what all the fuss about running under vista was about after TK released the last set of patches for the G1 series.

Well, it's not simply an enhancement meant solely for vista and Win7 users. It brings a few new features to the table, my favorite being improved avionics modeling, namely RWR displays and threat-warning lights.

SF2 structure is a breeze to mod and it does not affect core files.

Easy to mix and match and back up as well. No need to extract the cat if you're an amature modder.

 

For example, I have everything merged in my SF2 mod folder (SF2+SF2V+SF2E). Added some modern planes and weapons and even included the Vietnam All-In-One mod. Since my laptop is not powerful, I was able to take out the sky mod of the Vietnam mod easily and settled with stock.

 

I heard you can also build "stand-alone complete conversion mods" without making a copy of the whole game folder. Just create your <custom> mod folder and just copy the SF2.exe and change the name to <custom>.exe.

 

Totally loving the new format and the modders agree (lots of effort being done converting stuff to SF2 standards these days).

Absolutely correct! Got it working with 3 separate mods already.
