Rickitycrate 10 Posted August 17, 2009 (edited) HI guys, I'm getting set to return to campaign and want to fly german two-seaters. My question is can a gamepad rather than a joystick be used for the contol of the observer's gun. I have a dickens of a time trying to line up the observer gun with the joystick. Seems a pad might give better control and mimic gun operation a little more closely to real life. p.s.: if anyone can advise me on a Dell 2350 please see my thread in the General Help forum. Olham 164 Posted August 17, 2009 Yes, it's a PITA to aim and fire with a joystick in observer's seat. The new TrackIR 5 set up window showed something about "mouse controll" - perhaps a solution? I'll try that out tomorrow and report.

Olham, If you can find a way of using the mouse to control the observer's gun the same way as it's done in IL-2, it'll make things a bloody sight easier to fly two-seater campaigns - especially online. Fingers crossed. Vasco
Rickitycrate 10 Posted August 17, 2009 I quess what I'm asking is can you have two controllers working? Pedals are seperate from sticks and work together. Can a guy fly with a stick and when he switches to observer grab the gamepad and aim and shoot? I guess I'll just have to try it and see.

I have 2 sticks and peds working now I think you can have as many controllers as USB plugs Suggest you make the switch to gunner and pause Open Controllers and see if the TG is configurable If so, I'd say you're good to go
Rickitycrate 10 Posted August 19, 2009 (edited) Hi guys. Well I plugged-in a usb gamepad in and during flight I went the observer position. The game pad worked right away. I did not set it up or configure. As it defaulted for me with the left thumbstick for aiming and buttons 1 or 2 working for fire. Very simple and all I could ask for. Much better control of aiming and the sensation of operating the machine gun. Now I need a gamepad with FFB! Maybe this is old news for you guys but it is yet another immersion enhancer for me. I start out as pilot and simply keep the gamepad handy and when I switch to observer I grab the game pad. It is very seamless and less frustrating. It makes it easier to see why the A/I observer gunners are so deadly. So far very simple and no conflicts with controllers. Give it a try you probably have a gamepad in your kitbag. Cheers! I give it two thumbs up, hehe. Edited August 19, 2009 by Rickitycrate

I found when I tried to introduce a FF gamepad to my system, I lost all FF control because my joystick (Logitech Wingman) is also FF. Apparently if you have two FF controllers on the same system it does not work properly. When I finally replaced the FF gamepad with a non-FF version, I got the FF working again properly on my joystick. This is all under Win XP. Vista may work better, don't know that. It could have been something I didn't have configured right but I couldn't figure it out and just gave up. I hate to discourage you from getting a FF gamepad. I'll just say I had trouble. You're mileage may vary.
Rickitycrate 10 Posted August 19, 2009 Thanks for the headsup Mark. I use that very stick and really like it. If I do buy a FFB pad of course I'll only pay a couple bucks so no loss. This is great for any of us 2 seater jockeys.
Olham 164 Posted August 19, 2009 Would a mouse work, too?
Rickitycrate 10 Posted August 19, 2009 Would a mouse work, too? Ich weiss es nicht. Gamepad is good because it approximates hloding the gun in your hands.
