Some AI questions

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

The AI is really giving me a hard time, and so it's very rewarding when I shot my first Albatros yesterday.

I have some questions regarding the AI-behaviour:

1. Can I sneak behind an AI-plane and shoot him (not like IL2 where a fighter will always have eyes in the rear of his head)

2. Can I flee into a cloud and the AI will loose my track (that would be very cool)

3. Do AI planes use the same flight modell as the player plane? I saw some strange behaviour: I was flying very moderately up and straight (in a Pup I think) to get some height and the Albatros behind me was doing something (to me) very foolish - he always went up to the sky and then dropped again over one wing (that's what I could see when looking backwards) Anyway he stays behind me - He should have lost speed with the strange manouver I think.

4. can I escape AI planes for example by diving down or will they glue to me until the end.

Item 2. In an earlier thread, one of the Developers did say that if your clouds were set at "5", the AI could not see through them.

1. Can't answer for sure. I've only been in that position attacking a flight of two seaters. With fighters, I've been lucky sometimes to spot them before their bullets and take away their advantage.

2. According to Pol, if your clouds are set on 5 in the config.exe, the clouds do block AI vision as well.

3. Nope. They don't have the same restrictions as us and therefore many historical tactics due to machine performance differences don't apply here. IRC, they also have unlimited ammo and fuel.

4. No again (most times). It has been done, but referring to #3 it doesn't always work i.e. a DR1 sticking to the tail of a SPAD in a multi-thousand foot dive. The best viable means for escape is hedge hopping since the AI won't go that low and obtain a good firing position. They may try to make firing passes though. Then drag them across an airfield or ground facility and let the AA gunners help you out.

I gather that AI programming is the hardest thing to do - makes sense really- how to get the plane to behave the same as a human!!

You can get a sneak on some - set to rookie for example.

In QC, best results are starting at height against Ace. Fly full real using only eyes and trackir and dogfight against two or more aces and you'll likely get beat.

If you don't, you are brilliant, absolutely brilliant- or telling porkies- or using some of the "aids"

The biggest let down is their behaviour when they are near the ground.

They can start doing their own thing which is zooming into a stall without any interest in you at all.

But fight them at height and you have it all to do.

1. No, I am pretty sure the AI is all-seeing...no blind spot.

2. Apparently yes, if you have cloud slider on 5, as I believe Polovski posted that the AI can't see through clouds on that setting.

3. Sounds like the AI is doing yo-yo's and cutting inside your turn...nothing foolish about that.

4. Depends of the plane types, you versus the enemy. If you are in a SPAD or Pfalz you should be able to dive away. If you are in a Nieuport, you should not.
