Triumph and Tragedy!

 

We were tasked once again with escorting our bombers to the front. We did the same as the last time, take off and climb high to 9,000 meters in order to conserve fuel. The plan was to let the bombers go in ahead on their run towards the target while we pounced on whatever enemy fighters that would attack them from the rear.

 

However we made some errors in managing our power settings and met the enemy 12 kilometers ahead of the bombers while still up above. The Yankess were very agressive and a number of them came up to engage us. We let them think they were in a superior position then broke formation and turned into them.

 

One habit that annoys me to no end is that i find myself wasteful of ammunition with the initial bursts of fire. ALWAYS too heavy on the trigger. It normally takes a kill help settle down. Once again it was a demonstration of the superiority of the MIG 19 over the American F-100. We have noted that the only times we've suffered serious setbacks has been when we've been seriously outnumbered. With closer odds the MIG is virtually incincible.

 

As long as one prevents onself from stupid errors, that is.

 

SR LT Joseph Fedutenko was flying straight and level like a target and was downed by a missle just moments after MAJ Timofei Gnido lost control of his aircraft and crashed while fighting an F-100.

 

Such an ignominius end to a fine pilot and leader!

 

Fedutenko had no such luck as he bailed out over enemy territory and was taken prisoner by the Imperialists. Woe be onto him!

 

To show some light in tha face of such ill luck, CAPT Nikita Nikulin, Captain Akmet-khan and i decimated the foe with myself being responsible for downing no fewer than five F-100s. A sixth got away as i had him firmly in my sights, pulled the trigger, and nothing.

 

Out of ammunition!!!

 

I cannot wait to see what can be done once the useless shooting is done away with!

Alas, SR LT Oleg Petrov was downed after a furious fight against overwhelming odds. He was seen to bail out of his flaming MIG19 but no one saw any signs of a parachute. The area where he went down was right over the some of the heaviest fighting of the push towards Bonn.

 

How bad it feels at the moment of victory over the imperialists.

 

His final tally was 34

7 B-57s

 

2 F-105 Thunderchiefs

 

1 EB-66 Destroyer

I thinking of trying an SU7 next but when looking around the downloads, i picked up the update for WOV Gold and was hooked by my first test flight in a B26K. Tommorrow i will get back in the skies for sure and fly that great plane into battle!

Must admit I am thinking the same thing with the B-26... spent a couple of hours learning how to dogfight with it against Mig-17's... damn where's the rear gunner when you need him...

My concern is dealing with AAA since now i'm flying something that is much larger than the SPAD i had so much success with. Only combat will show how durable the plane is but at least you are moving much faster so it'll make a harder target for the gunners.

 

One can only imagine what will happen at places like Vihn and the Arrowhead!

Well, after playing several DiD campaigns but being the lazy ass I have never published anything related. Now I´m going to do my first public DiD.

The pilot is Matthew Callahan and will fly for the 80th Fighter Bomber Squadron in Korea. My intention is to fly a full life career (as long as I can survive, off course) starting in Korea (1950-53), then Taiwan (1958), South California (1962), Vietnam (1965-1972), Madagascar (1977) and finally Europe (1979).

Mind you English is not my first lenguage, so there might (and probably will be) be tons of grammar and spelling errors.

 

Now lets cut to the chase:

 

The first mission was a simple armed reconnaissance over enemy territory close to Haeju, by the coast. No enemy presence was expected so only an element took part on the mission. The weather was horrible from the beginning to the end, low clouds and heavy rain provided little visibility. This had at least a positive effect, their AAA could´t shoot at us on our way there.

 

After taking off we climbed out of the clouds, around 10.000ft. It took us around twenty minutes to get to the target. We started to lose altitude just 5 miles shy of it. The North Koreans wanted to show us some hospitality with their AAA guns and we soon found ourselves sorrounded by explosions and smoke.

 

We had to take a couple of passes before we could spot the target, a column of 11 trucks moving north. I dropped my external tanks and moved into position for a bombing run, my 500lb bombs hitting the center of the convoy. My wingman strafed the column with rockets but called no hit.

I did another pass with rockets but they fell slightly short and missed, I took a quick strafing with my machineguns hitting a couple of trucks. My wingman called for a hit just a second before he got hit himself by a AAA, fortunatly it was of no importance and managed to return home safe and sound.

I did several more passes destroying the rest of the column. The journey back to base was uneventful and I landed without problems.

 

I´ve been awarded a "Distinguished Service Cross" for our success.

After playing in the desert and Vietnam for a few years I've finally gotten found to having a go in Israel.

Hopefully I'll keep this guy alive through the Attrition War, Yom Kipur, Golan Stalemate and Lebanon War.

Still climbing to my first waypoint and I get something on the radar. Looks like the target's coming my way already.

 

Order my flight to engage. Whilst we're still closing someone takes out the first 21 with a Sparrow.

The second one banks hard around trying to get on the tail on one of my flight.

He's on full burner, making him easy meat for my Winder.

He hits the drink pretty close to the first one.

 

Nice little Milk run for my first mission. The whole thing couldn't have lasted than ten minutes from start to finish.

There's lots of Sparrows in the air. Not sure who got the kills but I don't care, that's two Mig-19s dealt with.

Mig-19s give me nightmares.

 

Made short work of the two 17s at the target area. All I had to do was maneuver around while my flight took care of them

 

 

Heading back, looks like they've vectored another Red flight towards us.

Some more Sparrows make easy work of them.

Man, I never get tired of the fly by cam of a burning target.

 

So - second mission over and done with.

 

 

Good work, I got 2 kills. I'm happy with that.

Looks like Sparrows are the way to go in '69.

Man - you gotta love BVR missiles. The only thing that worries me is - when are the other side gonna start using them?

Seems like I messed up at the end of my last mission.

I must have hit refly rather than accept, because when I relaunched SF2 my pilot showed as having flown only one mission, and having one kill.

To even things up I quickly launched another mission and then aborted it, so at least my missions flown is as it should be.. Hope that's alright.

 

Mission 3. Another short CAP up north.

 

Again, two 21s tried to bounce us on take-off. We made short work of them.

 

 

I got one with a winder.

Well - that didn't last very long.

 

Recon flight just over the Jordan border, I figured would be a milk run.

 

OK, so we caught some flak going over the target, but nothing to write home about.

 

 

After getting an RTB from Red Crown, decided to turn back and deal with the two 17-s that had been loitering about a few miles from the target.

 

This was a mistake.

 

These guys were good.

 

Very good.

 

 

Well - either that or I was very bad.

Or complacent.

 

Anyway - as a greater man than me once said - 'Game over man'

A CAP mission! The commies have airplanes, who would have thought that?.

 

Our orders were to take off an patrol the sky around Kusan. The weather has been s**tty all month and today was no difference.

 

After leaving the base we started climbing, I wanted to be at 30.000ft by the time we reached Kusan. We had to loiter a little over the place and I was beginning to think there would be no enemies after all when number three called "Bandits!".

A quick look down and there they were, a couple of silver North Korean Yak-9s. I gave order to my wingman to stay on my six, I dropped my wingtanks and dived on them. The second element did the same too. On the first pass I managed to hit one of them with a burst and I thought this was gonna be piece of cake...I was sadly mistaken.

After recovering from the suprise the North Koreans proved to be skillful, pulling hard-g turns everytime one of us was about to get on their six. All off a sudden I hear on the radio that someone has been hit, I quickly check on my wingmen to discover it was number two, the guy who was supposed to protect my six but decided otherwise.

At this point I thought it was time to rise the stakes and put an end to the show, so when one of the Yaks tried to pull another hard-g turn I followed tight, losing energy at an alarming rate, but with the help of full extended flaps I managed to stay right behind him, a long burst from my 6 50cal guns and he was all gone, splash one.

I checked for the next one and saw my other two wingmen struggling to stay behind him. One of them could get a hit but soon overshoot. The commie didn´t lose the chance and took a pot shoot at him but failed to cause much damage, he seemed to be out of 20mm ammo and those 13mm heavy machineguns are as week as our own 50cal.

Following the same attack pattern as I did with the first Yak, I got right behind, flaps lowered. He tried to turn but in doing that he gave me a big target, I lined the sights right ahead of him and pulled the trigger...splash two.

After that we went RTB, nothing else happend on the way back. Luckly my number two could bail out and was rescued by South Koreans with just some severe wounds.

 

The mission was considered a success and I was awarded with an Air Medal for my two kills. Although I can´t shake the shame of losing a jet to an old prop piece of crap.

The first big operation of the war. Lots of aircraft from different squadrons involved.

 

Our mission was a strike against an ammo factory at Ongjin. The weather was perfect, wideopen clear sky.

This time the tiny enemy forces did not show up. The way to the target was simple routine and the attack was executed without problems, not even the several AAA guns caused grief. The factory was destroyed among a few other targets around it and the journey back to base was as swift and fast as the rest of the mission. Piece of cake.

AAA pounding this time. I hate this missions, it´s dangerous to loiter over AAA but even more dangerous if you also have to attack them. The target is the airfield close to Wonsan.

 

Things went pretty well. We got intercepted on our way there by a couple of Yak9s, but they were too low and slow so I just went full throttle and moved away, or so I thought. Just a few minutes after our attack on the airfield defenses began one of the Yaks dived on me, I dodged him and looked around for his partner, but he was nowhere to be seen. Since this Yak seemed to like me the most I decided not to bother my wingman and shoot it down by myself. I moved to my favourite dogfight playground, fast and low, the Yak took the bait and in a couple of turns I was already on his six, a few .50cal bursts and he was gone for good. After that I resumed the attack on the AAA and soon they were all gone.

 

Mission accomplished, RTB.

 

This time I´ve got myself a shinning Silver Star.

 

NOTE: Sorry I didn´t took any screens from the actual battle, I forgot yesterday I did set the SS button to one on the throttle.

Great work people!

 

Right as i was getting set to start my new campaign last week my comp pretty much died so i had to go out and pick up a new one today. It'll be another day or two before i'm back in action since i have to reinstall every little backed up thing and see if it works. If not i'll have to start from scratch.

Time to choke some Commie supply lines. Target, Chosin, right by the Yalu river.

 

Quite a journey all the way to the Chinese border. Very rought terrain for this kind of mission, lots of mountains. I guess that was the reason my wingman became one with the grass. At some point he must have pushed too far and crashed. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary.

What an incredible way to begin!

 

Two just great missions, the second of which was something special since the guns in the area where neatly taken out before we came into the area. Not much on detail i admit, but my wingmen seem to be hopeless at A2G and so i'm off to figure out what i can do to get them straight. The first mission involved the wrecking of two enemy bases in RP1

This was a wild one and we were lucky to get out better worse for wear,

 

We were tasked with suppressing triple A for an attack on a VC basecamp. Along for the ride were 2LT Ron Barton, MAJ Kaye Sheffler, and 2LT Paul Baily. Take off and assmble was no big deal, there was a silid overcast with low clouds but nothing at 85,00ft which was our chosen altitude.

 

As we neared the target area Mamba flight(a pair of F-100s out of Da Nang)was already on station and were doing such an outstanding job that i called Control and was cleared out of the area. So se turned northeast towards Quon Long and decided to take a look at what was over the DMZ. It didn't take long to find something. We knew of AA gun emplacement from Intell reports and perhaps a radar somewhere in the vicinity. Well, that's what we found and boy did we get found out as well!

 

As we went in to hit the radar( at a base no less) it seemed like the sky exploded as fire came from seemingly everywhere. Since we last came here the north vietnamese moved in a hoard of guns and now we had a big problem. Hoping to divide their fire and set up for another run i turned towards the coast while Ron went after the radar.

 

Man was the fire intense! How they did not get me is a mystery!

 

As soon as Barton called "bombs away" i called for everyone to form up so we could think things over.

 

As we headed back towards the hills, i figured that as we passed just south of the guns we would turn and come in on them quick.

 

That's what we did and they opened up with a storm of fire. It was so bad that after Ron and i dropped, i ordered everyone to get out of the area and dumped all ordnance so we could fly faster!

 

They got the better of us today, but next time we plan on bringing a few surprises.

This was a wild one to say the least!

 

It all started with the road bridge at Quon Lang. That was our target and so we were a two plane force heading out to deal with it. Due to the very bad weather, we decided to use it to our advantage. Climbing slowly northeast up to 12,000ft, the plan was to get to altitude and swing west towards the IP, which was where the CA river comes out of the hills. We would have the distraction of multiple flights in the area to set up for a dive on the target and a quick low level getaway to the southeast to where intell has determined that there are no guns.

 

We were pretty confident that there were no radars in the area so we could count on coming down out of the clouds at speed for a good glide bomb attack and get out of there before the gunners could get a good look at us.

 

And wouldn't you know that it all went to hell just as we were approaching our tip over spot?

 

Some Huns out of Da Nang got there first and called in that they got the bridge so now we had a problem. With our primary gone it was right to send our wingman home and for me and right seater 2LT Andrew M. D. Semper, to decide what to do.

 

Finally we decided on our original plan in order to further damage the bridge. We were carrying 14 MK82s so the odds were good that we could wreck the primary some more.

 

The first clue that it was not going to be a walk in the park was the 100mm bursts that began bursting around us. Yep, they must have had assistance down there since they were shooting well even though we were above the clouds. So full throttle and a turn north was in order. After a few minutes more of manuvering around we figured we were in the right place so down Andy and i went.

 

It would have been perfect except for the our navigation being a bit off and breaking out of the clouds with the bridge slightly behind us. As the flak started getting worse, we could only head out on our original escape route while trying to plot our next move. The situation we were in was that pretty much everyone was going home and here we were at low level in lousy weather. Knowing then that some potential targets could be found further downriver, we turned and began flying around looking for something worthy of dropping our bombs on. We knew there was a POL site out there but we just didn't know exactly where.

 

After what seemed to be an eternity of zig zagging over the Ca, we heard some Marines that we knew were the flak supression for a strike at the POL site. It seemed they were behind us a few miles so we climbed a bit a began a turn to head back upriver. Lo and behold, we saw something!

 

There were some good sized buildings so it must have been something important. Me and Andy decided to drop on it and as we closed in we could see that it was a power plant. We caught the gunners a bit by surprise but they were quick to react. The fire was so hot that i could only make a reasonable SWAG and let loose. Forget about anything fancy, this was just like Ploesti. The moment that the bombs were released we went into some very abrupt evasive manuvering as well as heading for just over the weeds.

 

From all the glare behind us we knew we hit something since secondaries were going off but that was all we could figure since there was heavy fire coming from virtually everywhere. Somehow, we got going on the wrong heading and went a bit further downriver where there were more guns. Luckily, we were able to find a hill to zoom behind and banked hard towards our intended egress and safety.

 

We held the throttles wide open until we came to the spot on the coast that was where we were to climb back to the west and home. Boy was i shaking and i didn't relax until we were back at 12,000ft and well on the way home.

Had a good mission despite a few hairy moments.

 

Took off with Andy in the right seat and 2LT Everet Olmstead, MAJ Kaye Sheffler, and 2LT Adam Brown. The weather wasn't too bad and since the target was relativly close, we figured on being able to hit hard anything in the area.

 

Going in low and slow, we found out quickly that it was an error as some rather intense but inaccurate fire came up at us. At that same moment we saw some trucks a bit in the distance and so went to work. Alas, there were only a few and so we turned our attention to the guns and the camp. We all made multiple passes and knocked out everything except for one pesky 57mm that was a pain to keep in sight since there were low clouds in the area and you had to pay carefull attention to a nearby hill. So home we went.

 

Except for taking a couple of 14.5mm hits, everything was pretty nice. Looks like HQ must like how we're doing things.
