ID this Wappen

Hi Guys,

WNW released an Alb DVa with the following markings, which seem to be those of Ja 14 (see attached). The purported proprietor is listed as Ltn Vogt von Hunoltstein. However, Jasta Pilots, Rick Duiven, and Jörg Mückler all had him with Ja32b. Anyone have any idea who may have actually flown this machine? If you can find a match for the Wappen...family or city or state...

Here is Wikipedia about the von Hunolsteins. Their Wappen was indeed red and gold (yellow).

Will search on for more recent members.

 

Note: they are written "von Hunolstein" - not von Hunoltstein.

Hallo Olham,

Pretty unlikely von Hunoltstein is our man. He served with FA293, then went to Ja32b, where he served as adjutant for the rest of the war. The list of pilots for the appropriate period in Ja14 is : Werner, Boy, Rothe, von Scheel, Schulte, Stenzel, Wenk, Gefr Benzler, Bigalk, Grabe, Honig, Peter, Preiss, possibly Schabel, Wuebben and von Wulffen gen von Sternberg.

there was no Albatros D Va model kit in 1:32 scale on the market,

And now they give us one, that isn't even famous?

They had such a big choice of good looking design (Ritter von Schleich for example),

I have to agree with you... it's a bad choice, and is now creating a lot of buzz on the Aerodrome as some folks have the same feeling about the choice of livery. But then again... buzz is what creates sales...

Oh come on guys, if you don't like the livery the model comes in, make some stencils and paint the markings on yourself. I never use water decals on models. I have been painting them on for over over 20 years now. They look real nice if airbrushed with a couple light coats of thinned paint. Beats the snot out of decals anyday.

hmm... just guessing, but Grand Duchy of Baden had red/gold colors in flag and medals. Baden used also red/yellow cockades. So our guy probably is from Baden...

Catch, "Wappen" means something like "coat of arms; crest".

 

But it's not sure here, that those stripes are from a crest - it could just be a personal design.

 

Conrad, when you manage to do the signs on a 1:32 scale model, I have deep respect

for that! I tried it, and it wasn't easy.

Hat's off to you if you paint them on! It must look a lot more realistic than a decal ever could.

 

As far as my comment on the livery, its more about giving the plane a more stunning look and drawing in the buyer/builder... no matter what level. Let's say they used Voss, Baumer, Kissenberth, von Schleich, MvR, or anyone from Jasta 5... that would look much more presentable on the box than this choice.

 

But you're 100%, paint it anyway you want it as really, you're buying the model, not the decals.

Modeller's tip for decals:

 

- paint the model in glossy colour first

- apply decals

- solve the decal gelatine substance (with a special stuff you get in the model shop)

- when it's all dry, and you have only the emblem itself left, airbrush with matt or semi-gloss clear finish

 

Maybe it's common proceedure now - it was brandnew, when I built the last one.
