Yes the caption at the beginnig say's it's done in 10-13m/s side wind.

 

And a totally crazy flight here

Apparently it flies only because it doesn't let go of the air.

From what I gather they have the balls to test it in most extreme wind and with car-grade petrol.

Well, it's more or less a biplane with no wingtips and therefore no tip drag. However, the wing ends (for lack of a better word) would be heavy, and not provide much except lateral stability in an odd location.

Judging by the way it performs a banking turn, a geat deal of its lift is generated by the prop.

 

I liked an explanation by someone of the design team, that this wing "traps the air in a tube, thus the air has nowhere to go and is forced to do its job" :grin: Oh, and they also say the plane can be easily built out of sheet metal.

The idea is indeed old as PopMech article described. The point of these guys is that they built a flyable ring out of junk and an engine.
