Modding the Tac screen...

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know a way to mod the Tac screen, perhaps via a .xml file, so that it displays ONLY the direction to the next waypoint and nothing else - no aircraft, ground targets, etc.

Olham posted once on how to change the colors on the Tac screen via the .xml so I think its possible.

On that subject what program do folks here like to use to change .xml files?

The easiest way is to cycle through until it shows only ships. Unless you're near the water you'll never see a blip.

Von Baur's tip is quickest.

One could also try and change the colours for "Friends", "Enemies", "Bogies" and "Goal" to full transparency.

The best solution is to fly with TAC off, and use the ingame map for checking the direction;

or the "top shot way" - fly after a real paper map. (Really possible to follow roads or rivers).

Yes that is the easiest. Thanks Von Baur. I need to find your post Olham on the .xml file that controls the Tac screen so I can take out the word "Ships" out of it. I will leave it blanks or, at worst, change "Ships to "Nav". And make ships transparent while I am there!

Edit: Finding that post may be tough - really Olham...8,609 posts!?! :yikes:

Hehe...turned out it was easier to search the word "Tac" than to scroll through all of Olhams posts!

So you found it now? I still wonder, why you don't use the ingame map for guiding you.

Pop it up every now and then, and correct your course?

BTW Is it possible to have a higher resolution of the in game map?

It is so pixelated you can't see a thing... :dntknw:

Even more is it possible to replace it with something as the printable map that you, (Olham) and Rabu made?

Not to mention that I already have installed the enhanced in game map that can be found in the d/l page.

Yes, the in-game map is quite horrible. Another pet peeve of mine.

I don't think that the ViewUI.xml file is going to be my ticket.

I can changed the colors but I can't see the Tac labels (Ships, Ground, Air) in it. I'll have to look elsewhere.

And Olham - where did you change the size of the Tac screen?

In the MS XML editor that I am using I did not see size of the Tac screen mentioned anywhere.

BTW, here is the full-sized 1918 National Geographic Western Front map I built from 120 screen clips and assembled into a very high quality JPEG copy. I also cleaned up a couple of spots on the original map scan:

NGS 1918 Western Front Map

This is a VERY large image, (about 7000 x 6000), so just be aware of that when you are downloading it and unpacking it. This is the map I use when flying in OFF, (unless I am in the Alsace/Vosges region, and then I use Waldemar Kurtz's maps available in the OFF downloads). I believe Olham is also using this one for navigating over the virtual front as well.

Cheers!

Lou

That's the file for the TAC size, Duke. Near the bottom, after the HUD settings, listed as tactical display. It's the BGScale setting. I keep mine at 0.20 and at the bottom center of the monitor (because that's the least likely place you'll ever find an enemy airplane, therefore the least obtrusive in a fight, IMO, but that's a personal preference). At that size and dragged down as far as it will go the bottom 1/4 of it will be out of view completely.

Ah...thank you.

Now to find the "Air", "Ground", and "Ship" labels.

If you mean the words, "All", "Ships", etc on the TAC, I don't think that's editable. Trust me, it's not that obtrusive anyway, especially if you've reduced the TAC's size. If you're talking about the labels that hover over objects, they're about 1/3 of the way down that file listed as, "Friendcolor", "Enemycolor", "Targetcolor" etc.

Heavens, no! That was a good-natured jab at OvS, one of the devs here, who is von Stachel of Red Baron fame and author of the "Hell's Angels" patches (there were more than one weren't there?). I have flown as von Baur (or Ritter von Baur) on all sims...Red Baron, Richtofen's Skies, OFF, even CFS (the first one) and IL-2.

Hi there,

Another way to think about the TAC is that the AI "see" you, and given that your vision on the PC is quite limited as per what you what see with the eye in the sky, it has been included in the Survival In the Air - Realistic Survival Settings, in the OFF Sub Topics. There you will find OFF Knowledge Base and OFF Survival In the Air , which includes Pilot Primers for various aircraft and settings and missions for OFF Workshop, and flying.

Cheers,
