Most Kills, Single Sortie...

Recommended Posts

Something i've been meaning to ask for a long time.

My personal best that i positively remember and have records of is 9.

I was doing WOE during 62 and was in a French squadron flying F-100s. "Incoming Raid" was the word and so it was a maximum effort for us. Taking off, i zoomed up to 20,000ft and set off at full burner towards the enemy. As we neared each other it wasn't IL28s like i expected, but bomb carrying MIG21s escorted by MIG19s. So i went in behind them and went to work. Got 7 inbound MIG21s and 2 on the way out, 7 of them gun kills. The last one was a doozy. I was so caught up with getting in as close as possible that i collided with the MIG just as the cannons shells ripped him apart and so had to bail out!

The things that stuck out were friendly fighters showing up and taking pressure off of me, shooting down a MIG right over the base, and still having 200 rounds of 20mm when i punched out!

That pilot(who's name i'll never recall)ended up with 59 kills before colliding with another MIG21 and bailing out into Soviet imprisonment.

So share your best!

I just got 8 flying a Mirage III during the Yom Kippur War campaign. The mission was to intercept and so we did. I had two quick kills with the Shafrir-2s against a couple Su-7 and then I began to strafe them left and right with the cannons, before I knew it I had kill 4 of them while the other 4 were downed by my wingmen. Not a minute after that a group of Mig-21 appeared and in the ensuing dogfight I took 2 of them for my total 8 before I ran out of ammo (its amazing how quickly those 250 rounds dissapear) and went RTB.

Settings were all on hard except Enemy and Visual (wish I had a TrackIR) which were on normal.

I dont think I´ve ever had more than 8, not even flying the F-15.

14 kills with a MiG-17F during Rolling Thunder in WOV. The AI was as stupid as 5 square kilometers of empty desert

Let me guess, a "well disciplined" F-105 squadron?

F-105 were the victims indeed. Very brave, very stupid, very easy to shoot down. I should call it not AI but AS (Artificial Stupidity)

AI is quite strange when it comes to planes on a bombing mission. Flying the Yom Kippur War campaign on WoI I have come to observe four behaviours.

1º You approach, they see you, they do nothing, you attack and slaughter them.

2º You approach, they see you, they do nothing, you attack, they break and later try to get back on track for a bombing run (this one I have only seen on IL-28s and Tu-16s).

3º You approach, they see you, they do nothing, you attack and then they drop ordinance and break (in case of fighters or interceptors they fight back).

4º You approach, they see you, they drop ordinance and break (thats seems to be the most rare one).

In a MIG17F, that must had been a perfect intercept! Taking into account escorts, fuel, weather, the F-105 cruise speed, gunnery, etc, etc.

In WOE i've only ever had successful missions like that against MIG17s and MIG21s in the early days since in the later campaigns i try to engage the escorts and have my wingman go after the strike aircraft. You also can't chase the enemy too far over the front as you'll soon be engaged by SAM.

That French Hun driver from above? IIRC in another sortie he downed 7 inbound MIG17s before running out of ammo.

5 kills. F4E in Linebacker II.

If I remember correctly I got the first kill with a Sparrow, extended out of the fight and then another Sparrow kill when I re-engaged.

Then I ended up in a dogfight where I salvoed two pairs of Sidewinders for another kill.

Extended again and salvoed two Sparrows this time because the firing solution wasn't ideal, fourth kill.

Fifth kill was guns, and left me very marginal on fuel.

Then home for tea and biscuits

I try to deal with the 17's using Sparrows ( if I can ) because they are a lot more difficult for me ( personally ) to deal with in a dogfight than the '21 - I'm doing the right thing by using the vertical, but too often I just end up in a stalemate that has eaten way too much of my fuel. My latest tactic is to knock it off after a very short while if I'm not making any headway against a '17 and go and find someone easier to kill

Bring em close to the ground, the AI doesn´t like to fly that low so they wont be able to turn tight. Doing that I can get into a 17´s six within two or three high yoyos.

I'll give that a go, thanks. No problem persuading them to join you in the weeds ?

How about AAA ? I'm using the excellent Vietnam Gold upgrade and the enhanced flak can make life very interesting ( and short ) at low level

There shouldn´t be any, just show them some ass and they wont resist the temptation. Once they are down and close break hard going even lower (they wont follow past 100 feet, never ever unless they mess up big, in that case they should become one with the grass so no problem), at one point they will level, gain speed and some alttitude before they try to turn again, that´s your cue; if you do a high yoyo you´ll be right behind them. It might take two or three attemps before you can get close enough after the yoyo, but eventually you´ll be there. Its a matter of timing.

About the AAA, well, if you fight over a crowded area, keep your speed up when you go down, otherwise those 57mm will eat you to the bone. At least their tracers are quite easy to spot. If you can try to lure the 17´s to the jungle (mountains are less dangerous than the 57´s).
