Campaign Choice by Aerodrome

Recommended Posts

Does anyone fly with a certain Sqdn, Jasta or Escadrille, simply because he like the aerodrome they fly from?

Please report, where and why.

I want to do exactly that, and I fell in love with Google sat pics from Chipilly. I will check out, if it is really so beautiful there.

What I need to know: which British and French sqdns are flying from Chipilly in OFF, and what time of the war?

I don't want to switch through them all manually to find out.

Chipilly, anyone?

I can't believe the camping is that cheap at Chippy. I've paid over fifteen dollars a night for a lousy tent camp spot in our local state campgrounds. Only 1.50 Euro a night for a moto or bicycle campspot?

.

Here are a few for you Olham:

1 Naval, 15 February 1917

RFC 8, 22 March 1918

RFC 9, 15 July 1916

RFC 22, 27 April 1917

RFC 24, 1917

RFC 54, 1917

I also think Chipilly would be a very neat spot to go camping as well.

1 Naval, Feb 17 - I think that might be a Tripe. How could you resist, Olham!?!

It is. Or an Fee with No. 22; Sopwith Pup with No. 54; DH2 with No. 24.

Naval 6 also based at Chipilly in OFF, during April '17, flying Nieuport 17s.

Lou, I think, 8 and 9 are also RNAS and not RFC? I don't find RFC 9 in OFF?

Thanks, guys - the Tripes are never long there, it seems; so it may become 54 with the Pup;

as soon as my other Pup campaign with No. 46 Sqdn, RFC, will end.

But I would like to survive long enough to transfer to Filecamp Farm with Arthur Gould Lee

and the boys - he describes the place almost like "paradise with Nissen huts".

Lewie, 1,50 Euro is indeed extremely cheap for a camping site.

I haven't checked the dates, but couldn't you transfer your Pup pilot from 46 to 54?

As to the Tripes - enjoy it while it lasts!!

Yeah, another Tripe campaign is overdue!

I could transfer that Pup pilot - 2nd Lt. David Marlowe - to 54, but I would like to follow Arthur Gould Lee's book

"No Parachute!" with this pilots .

There are also 8 and 9 Naval, but I was not referring to those; I meant RFC 8 and 9. They may not be in OFF, but they were stationed at Chipilly. I provided you information from some printed sources I have, but I've not gone through all the squadrons in OFF to verify if they are there. I leave that up to you.

I recently flew for RFC-8 in a B.E2c. Not at Chipilly at that time tho (June 1915). RFC 9 is also in OFF as a bomber sqd I think.

Aaaaaah - that explains it: I have always only clicked "Britain" and "Fighter" on my search - dooohhh!!!

Sorry, Lou - I'm quite aware that I had rather been the jester but the king.

The winter of '16-17 was particularly harsh in the Somme Valley and in Mason's book about the Esc Layfayette they were having to scour the countryside for heating wood. I'm not sure how enthusiastic I'd be about time travelling back to those years and staying at a Somme airfield. B-B-bbbrrrrr!

I did do a Google map virtual tour of the area and it's got some great small back roads to tour, and most of the more renowned airfields are within a days ride of Chipilly.

I can see a Northern France-Picardie bike tour in my future.

Do you mean by bicycle? That's something I want to do some day.

Probably my small moto, but getting it shipped would be more expensive than a bicycle.

Flanders and northern France are so flat, that a bicycle trip would be fine, I'd say.
